Real-Time Dense Stereo Matching With ELAS on FPGA Accelerated Embedded Devices
For many applications in low-power real-time robotics, stereo cameras are the
sensors of choice for depth perception as they are typically cheaper and more
versatile than their active counterparts. Their biggest drawback, however, is
that they do not directly sense depth maps; instead, these must be estimated
through data-intensive processes. Therefore, appropriate algorithm selection
plays an important role in achieving the desired performance characteristics.
Motivated by applications in space and mobile robotics, we implement and
evaluate a FPGA-accelerated adaptation of the ELAS algorithm. Despite offering
one of the best trade-offs between efficiency and accuracy, ELAS has only been
shown to run at 1.5-3 fps on a high-end CPU. Our system preserves all
intriguing properties of the original algorithm, such as the slanted plane
priors, but can achieve a frame rate of 47fps whilst consuming under 4W of
power. Unlike previous FPGA based designs, we take advantage of both components
on the CPU/FPGA System-on-Chip to showcase the strategy necessary to accelerate
more complex and computationally diverse algorithms for such low power,

Real-time on-board obstacle avoidance for UAVs based on embedded stereo vision
In order to improve usability and safety, modern unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) are equipped with sensors to monitor the environment, such as
laser-scanners and cameras. One important aspect in this monitoring process is
to detect obstacles in the flight path in order to avoid collisions. Since a
large number of consumer UAVs suffer from tight weight and power constraints,
our work focuses on obstacle avoidance based on a lightweight stereo camera
setup. We use disparity maps, which are computed from the camera images, to
locate obstacles and to automatically steer the UAV around them. For disparity
map computation we optimize the well-known semi-global matching (SGM) approach
for the deployment on an embedded FPGA. The disparity maps are then converted
into simpler representations, the so called U-/V-Maps, which are used for
obstacle detection. Obstacle avoidance is based on a reactive approach which
finds the shortest path around the obstacles as soon as they have a critical
distance to the UAV. One of the fundamental goals of our work was the reduction
of development costs by closing the gap between application development and
hardware optimization. Hence, we aimed at using high-level synthesis (HLS) for
porting our algorithms, which are written in C/C++, to the embedded FPGA. We
evaluated our implementation of the disparity estimation on the KITTI Stereo
2015 benchmark. The integrity of the overall realtime reactive obstacle
avoidance algorithm has been evaluated by using Hardware-in-the-Loop testing in

RSGM: Real-time Raster-Respecting Semi-Global Matching for Power-Constrained Systems
Stereo depth estimation is used for many computer vision applications. Though
many popular methods strive solely for depth quality, for real-time mobile
applications (e.g. prosthetic glasses or micro-UAVs), speed and power
efficiency are equally, if not more, important. Many real-world systems rely on
Semi-Global Matching (SGM) to achieve a good accuracy vs. speed balance, but
power efficiency is hard to achieve with conventional hardware, making the use
of embedded devices such as FPGAs attractive for low-power applications.
However, the full SGM algorithm is ill-suited to deployment on FPGAs, and so
most FPGA variants of it are partial, at the expense of accuracy. In a non-FPGA
context, the accuracy of SGM has been improved by More Global Matching (MGM),
which also helps tackle the streaking artifacts that afflict SGM. In this
paper, we propose a novel, resource-efficient method that is inspired by MGM's
techniques for improving depth quality, but which can be implemented to run in
real time on a low-power FPGA. Through evaluation on multiple datasets (KITTI
and Middlebury), we show that in comparison to other real-time capable stereo
approaches, we can achieve a state-of-the-art balance between accuracy, power
efficiency and speed, making our approach highly desirable for use in real-time

A high speed Tri-Vision system for automotive applications
Purpose: Cameras are excellent ways of non-invasively monitoring the interior and exterior of vehicles. In particular, high speed stereovision and multivision systems are important for transport applications such as driver eye tracking or collision avoidance. This paper addresses the synchronisation problem which arises when multivision camera systems are used to capture the high speed motion common in such applications.
Methods: An experimental, high-speed tri-vision camera system intended for real-time driver eye-blink and saccade measurement was designed, developed, implemented and tested using prototype, ultra-high dynamic range, automotive-grade image sensors specifically developed by E2V (formerly Atmel) Grenoble SA as part of the European FP6 project â sensation (advanced sensor development for attention stress, vigilance and sleep/wakefulness monitoring).
Results : The developed system can sustain frame rates of 59.8 Hz at the full stereovision resolution of 1280âĂâ480 but this can reach 750 Hz when a 10 k pixel Region of Interest (ROI) is used, with a maximum global shutter speed of 1/48000 s and a shutter efficiency of 99.7%. The data can be reliably transmitted uncompressed over standard copper Camera-LinkÂź cables over 5 metres. The synchronisation error between the left and right stereo images is less than 100 ps and this has been verified both electrically and optically. Synchronisation is automatically established at boot-up and maintained during resolution changes. A third camera in the set can be configured independently. The dynamic range of the 10bit sensors exceeds 123 dB with a spectral sensitivity extending well into the infra-red range.
Conclusion: The system was subjected to a comprehensive testing protocol, which confirms that the salient requirements for the driver monitoring application are adequately met and in some respects, exceeded. The synchronisation technique presented may also benefit several other automotive stereovision applications including near and far-field obstacle detection and collision avoidance, road condition monitoring and others.Partially funded by the EU FP6 through the IST-507231 SENSATION project.peer-reviewe
Live Demonstration: On the distance estimation of moving targets with a Stereo-Vision AER system
Distance calculation is always one of the most
important goals in a digital stereoscopic vision system. In an
AER system this goal is very important too, but it cannot be
calculated as accurately as we would like. This demonstration
shows a first approximation in this field, using a disparity
algorithm between both retinas. The system can make a distance
approach about a moving object, more specifically, a qualitative
estimation. Taking into account the stereo vision system
features, the previous retina positioning and the very important
Hold&Fire building block, we are able to make a correlation

A modified model for the Lobula Giant Movement Detector and its FPGA implementation
The Lobula Giant Movement Detector (LGMD) is a wide-field visual neuron located in the Lobula layer of the Locust nervous system. The LGMD increases its firing rate in response to both the velocity of an approaching object and the proximity of this object. It has been found that it can respond to looming stimuli very quickly and trigger avoidance reactions. It has been successfully applied in
visual collision avoidance systems for vehicles and robots. This paper introduces a modified neural model for LGMD that provides additional depth direction information for the movement. The proposed model retains the simplicity of the previous model by adding only a few new cells. It has been
simplified and implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), taking advantage of the inherent parallelism exhibited by the LGMD, and tested on real-time video streams. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness as a fast motion detector
A sub-mW IoT-endnode for always-on visual monitoring and smart triggering
This work presents a fully-programmable Internet of Things (IoT) visual
sensing node that targets sub-mW power consumption in always-on monitoring
scenarios. The system features a spatial-contrast binary
pixel imager with focal-plane processing. The sensor, when working at its
lowest power mode ( at 10 fps), provides as output the number of
changed pixels. Based on this information, a dedicated camera interface,
implemented on a low-power FPGA, wakes up an ultra-low-power parallel
processing unit to extract context-aware visual information. We evaluate the
smart sensor on three always-on visual triggering application scenarios.
Triggering accuracy comparable to RGB image sensors is achieved at nominal
lighting conditions, while consuming an average power between and
, depending on context activity. The digital sub-system is extremely
flexible, thanks to a fully-programmable digital signal processing engine, but
still achieves 19x lower power consumption compared to MCU-based cameras with

Pushbroom Stereo for High-Speed Navigation in Cluttered Environments
We present a novel stereo vision algorithm that is capable of obstacle
detection on a mobile-CPU processor at 120 frames per second. Our system
performs a subset of standard block-matching stereo processing, searching only
for obstacles at a single depth. By using an onboard IMU and state-estimator,
we can recover the position of obstacles at all other depths, building and
updating a full depth-map at framerate.
Here, we describe both the algorithm and our implementation on a high-speed,
small UAV, flying at over 20 MPH (9 m/s) close to obstacles. The system
requires no external sensing or computation and is, to the best of our
knowledge, the first high-framerate stereo detection system running onboard a
small UAV
Towards an Autonomous Walking Robot for Planetary Surfaces
In this paper, recent progress in the development of
the DLR Crawler - a six-legged, actively compliant walking
robot prototype - is presented. The robot implements
a walking layer with a simple tripod and a more complex
biologically inspired gait. Using a variety of proprioceptive
sensors, different reflexes for reactively crossing obstacles
within the walking height are realised. On top of
the walking layer, a navigation layer provides the ability
to autonomously navigate to a predefined goal point in
unknown rough terrain using a stereo camera. A model
of the environment is created, the terrain traversability is
estimated and an optimal path is planned. The difficulty
of the path can be influenced by behavioral parameters.
Motion commands are sent to the walking layer and the
gait pattern is switched according to the estimated terrain
difficulty. The interaction between walking layer and navigation
layer was tested in different experimental setups
