Load Forecasting Based Distribution System Network Reconfiguration-A Distributed Data-Driven Approach
In this paper, a short-term load forecasting approach based network
reconfiguration is proposed in a parallel manner. Specifically, a support
vector regression (SVR) based short-term load forecasting approach is designed
to provide an accurate load prediction and benefit the network reconfiguration.
Because of the nonconvexity of the three-phase balanced optimal power flow, a
second-order cone program (SOCP) based approach is used to relax the optimal
power flow problem. Then, the alternating direction method of multipliers
(ADMM) is used to compute the optimal power flow in distributed manner.
Considering the limited number of the switches and the increasing computation
capability, the proposed network reconfiguration is solved in a parallel way.
The numerical results demonstrate the feasible and effectiveness of the
proposed approach.Comment: 5 pages, preprint for Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and

An Integrated Multi-Time-Scale Modeling for Solar Irradiance Forecasting Using Deep Learning
For short-term solar irradiance forecasting, the traditional point
forecasting methods are rendered less useful due to the non-stationary
characteristic of solar power. The amount of operating reserves required to
maintain reliable operation of the electric grid rises due to the variability
of solar energy. The higher the uncertainty in the generation, the greater the
operating-reserve requirements, which translates to an increased cost of
operation. In this research work, we propose a unified architecture for
multi-time-scale predictions for intra-day solar irradiance forecasting using
recurrent neural networks (RNN) and long-short-term memory networks (LSTMs).
This paper also lays out a framework for extending this modeling approach to
intra-hour forecasting horizons thus, making it a multi-time-horizon
forecasting approach, capable of predicting intra-hour as well as intra-day
solar irradiance. We develop an end-to-end pipeline to effectuate the proposed
architecture. The performance of the prediction model is tested and validated
by the methodical implementation. The robustness of the approach is
demonstrated with case studies conducted for geographically scattered sites
across the United States. The predictions demonstrate that our proposed unified
architecture-based approach is effective for multi-time-scale solar forecasts
and achieves a lower root-mean-square prediction error when benchmarked against
the best-performing methods documented in the literature that use separate
models for each time-scale during the day. Our proposed method results in a
71.5% reduction in the mean RMSE averaged across all the test sites compared to
the ML-based best-performing method reported in the literature. Additionally,
the proposed method enables multi-time-horizon forecasts with real-time inputs,
which have a significant potential for practical industry applications in the
evolving grid.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, under review for journal submissio
A MPC Strategy for the Optimal Management of Microgrids Based on Evolutionary Optimization
In this paper, a novel model predictive control strategy, with a 24-h prediction horizon, is
proposed to reduce the operational cost of microgrids. To overcome the complexity of the optimization
problems arising from the operation of the microgrid at each step, an adaptive evolutionary strategy
with a satisfactory trade-off between exploration and exploitation capabilities was added to the
model predictive control. The proposed strategy was evaluated using a representative microgrid that
includes a wind turbine, a photovoltaic plant, a microturbine, a diesel engine, and an energy storage
system. The achieved results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, outperforming
a global scheduling planner-based on a genetic algorithm by 14.2% in terms of operational cost.
In addition, the proposed approach also better manages the use of the energy storage system.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2016-75294-C2-2-RUnión Europea (Programa Horizonte 2020) 76409
Using dynamic optimal power flow to inform the design and operation of active network management schemes
Active Network Management (ANM) schemes are providing the communications and control infrastructure to allow the integration of energy storage and flexible demand in distribution networks. These technologies can be characterised as intertemporal in that their operation at different points in time is linked. This paper provides a discussion of the issues created when optimising an ANM scheme containing intertemporal energy technologies. A technique called Dynamic Optimal Power Flow is discussed and a case study is presented. The requirement to use forecasts of renewable energy resources such as wind power is discussed together with the issues that this creates
