    DOA ESTIMATION WITH HISTOGRAM ANALYSIS OF SPATIALLY CONSTRAINED ACTIVE INTENSITY VECTORS

    The active intensity vector (AIV) is a common descriptor of the sound field. In microphone array processing, AIV is commonly approximated with beamforming operations and uti- lized as a direction of arrival (DOA) estimator. However, in its original form, it provides inaccurate estimates in sound field conditions where coherent sound sources are simultane- ously active. In this work we utilize a higher order intensity- based DOA estimator on spatially-constrained regions (SCR) to overcome such limitations. We then apply 1-dimensional (1D) histogram processing on the noisy estimates for mul- tiple DOA estimation. The performance of the estimator is shown with a 7-channel microphone array, fitted on a rigid mobile-like device, in reverberant conditions and under dif- ferent signal-to-noise ratios

    Exploiting joint sparsity for far-field microphone array sound source localization

    Abstract(#br)The presence of far-field noise and reverberation poses significant challenges to the conventional microphone array sound source localization approaches. Consider the sparsity contained in the source direction vector, source localization can be transformed into a compressed sensing (CS) problem by constructing the redundancy frequency domain room impulse response (RIR) matrix as CS measurement matrix. In this paper a new sparse recovery model is derived by decomposing the RIR into delay response term and reverberation response term to facilitate reverberation mitigation via frequency domain accumulation. Furthermore, as the source direction vector of adjacent speech frames tends to exhibit similar sparse pattern, namely, the direction of source can be assumed to keep static within this short period, thus there exists substantial correlation of spatial sparsity among adjacent speech frames. In this paper, under the framework of distributed compressed sensing (DCS), multiple source direction vectors are treated as sparse solutions with common spatial support to derive a joint sparse recovery algorithm for far-field source localization. The experimental results obtained in the context of a uniform circle array (UCA) show that the proposed algorithm is capable of yielding better estimation performance compared with the traditional algorithms

    Three-Dimensional Geometry Inference of Convex and Non-Convex Rooms using Spatial Room Impulse Responses

    This thesis presents research focused on the problem of geometry inference for both convex- and non-convex-shaped rooms, through the analysis of spatial room impulse responses. Current geometry inference methods are only applicable to convex-shaped rooms, requiring between 6--78 discretely spaced measurement positions, and are only accurate under certain conditions, such as a first-order reflection for each boundary being identifiable across all, or some subset of, these measurements. This thesis proposes that by using compact microphone arrays capable of capturing spatiotemporal information, boundary locations, and hence room shape for both convex and non-convex cases, can be inferred, using only a sufficient number of measurement positions to ensure each boundary has a first-order reflection attributable to, and identifiable in, at least one measurement. To support this, three research areas are explored. Firstly, the accuracy of direction-of-arrival estimation for reflections in binaural room impulse responses is explored, using a state-of-the-art methodology based on binaural model fronted neural networks. This establishes whether a two-microphone array can produce accurate enough direction-of-arrival estimates for geometry inference. Secondly, a spherical microphone array based spatiotemporal decomposition workflow for analysing reflections in room impulse responses is explored. This establishes that simultaneously arriving reflections can be individually detected, relaxing constraints on measurement positions. Finally, a geometry inference method applicable to both convex and more complex non-convex shaped rooms is proposed. Therefore, this research expands the possible scenarios in which geometry inference can be successfully applied at a level of accuracy comparable to existing work, through the use of commonly used compact microphone arrays. Based on these results, future improvements to this approach are presented and discussed in detail

    Spatial Multizone Soundfield Reproduction Design

    It is desirable for people sharing a physical space to access different multimedia information streams simultaneously. For a good user experience, the interference of the different streams should be held to a minimum. This is straightforward for the video component but currently difficult for the audio sound component. Spatial multizone soundfield reproduction, which aims to provide an individual sound environment to each of a set of listeners without the use of physical isolation or headphones, has drawn significant attention of researchers in recent years. The realization of multizone soundfield reproduction is a conceptually challenging problem as currently most of the soundfield reproduction techniques concentrate on a single zone. This thesis considers the theory and design of a multizone soundfield reproduction system using arrays of loudspeakers in given complex environments. We first introduce a novel method for spatial multizone soundfield reproduction based on describing the desired multizone soundfield as an orthogonal expansion of formulated basis functions over the desired reproduction region. This provides the theoretical basis of both 2-D (height invariant) and 3-D soundfield reproduction for this work. We then extend the reproduction of the multizone soundfield over the desired region to reverberant environments, which is based on the identification of the acoustic transfer function (ATF) from the loudspeaker over the desired reproduction region using sparse methods. The simulation results confirm that the method leads to a significantly reduced number of required microphones for an accurate multizone sound reproduction compared with the state of the art, while it also facilitates the reproduction over a wide frequency range. In addition, we focus on the improvements of the proposed multizone reproduction system with regard to practical implementation. The so-called 2.5D multizone oundfield reproduction is considered to accurately reproduce the desired multizone soundfield over a selected 2-D plane at the height approximately level with the listener’s ears using a single array of loudspeakers with 3-D reverberant settings. Then, we propose an adaptive reverberation cancelation method for the multizone soundfield reproduction within the desired region and simplify the prior soundfield measurement process. Simulation results suggest that the proposed method provides a faster convergence rate than the comparative approaches under the same hardware provision. Finally, we conduct the real-world implementation based on the proposed theoretical work. The experimental results show that we can achieve a very noticeable acoustic energy contrast between the signals recorded in the bright zone and the quiet zone, especially for the system implementation with reverberation equalization

    Multiple source localization using spherical microphone arrays

    Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation is a fundamental task in acoustic signal processing and is used in source separation, localization, tracking, environment mapping, speech enhancement and dereverberation. In applications such as hearing aids, robot audition, teleconferencing and meeting diarization, the presence of multiple simultaneously active sources often occurs. Therefore DOA estimation which is robust to Multi-Source (MS) scenarios is of particular importance. In the past decade, interest in Spherical Microphone Arrays (SMAs) has been rapidly grown due to its ability to analyse the sound field with equal resolution in all directions. Such symmetry makes SMAs suitable for applications in robot audition where potential variety of heights and positions of the talkers are expected. Acoustic signal processing for SMAs is often formulated in the Spherical Harmonic Domain (SHD) which describes the sound field in a form that is independent of the geometry of the SMA. DOA estimation methods for the real-world scenarios address one or more performance degrading factors such as noise, reverberation, multi-source activity or tackled problems such as source counting or reducing computational complexity. This thesis addresses various problems in MS DOA estimation for speech sources each of which focuses on one or more performance degrading factor(s). Firstly a narrowband DOA estimator is proposed utilizing high order spatial information in two computationally efficient ways. Secondly, an autonomous source counting technique is proposed which uses density-based clustering in an evolutionary framework. Thirdly, a confidence metric for validity of Single Source (SS) assumption in a Time-Frequency (TF) bin is proposed. It is based on MS assumption in a short time interval where the number and the TF bin of active sources are adaptively estimated. Finally two analytical narrowband MS DOA estimators are proposed based on MS assumption in a TF bin. The proposed methods are evaluated using simulations and real recordings. Each proposed technique outperforms comparative baseline methods and performs at least as accurately as the state-of-the-art.Open Acces

    A room acoustics measurement system using non-invasive microphone arrays

    This thesis summarises research into adaptive room correction for small rooms and pre-recorded material, for example music of films. A measurement system to predict the sound at a remote location within a room, without a microphone at that location was investigated. This would allow the sound within a room to be adaptively manipulated to ensure that all listeners received optimum sound, therefore increasing their enjoyment. The solution presented used small microphone arrays, mounted on the room's walls. A unique geometry and processing system was designed, incorporating three processing stages, temporal, spatial and spectral. The temporal processing identifies individual reflection arrival times from the recorded data. Spatial processing estimates the angles of arrival of the reflections so that the three-dimensional coordinates of the reflections' origin can be calculated. The spectral processing then estimates the frequency response of the reflection. These estimates allow a mathematical model of the room to be calculated, based on the acoustic measurements made in the actual room. The model can then be used to predict the sound at different locations within the room. A simulated model of a room was produced to allow fast development of algorithms. Measurements in real rooms were then conducted and analysed to verify the theoretical models developed and to aid further development of the system.     Listening to Distances and Hearing Shapes:Inverse Problems in Room Acoustics and Beyond

    A central theme of this thesis is using echoes to achieve useful, interesting, and sometimes surprising results. One should have no doubts about the echoes' constructive potential; it is, after all, demonstrated masterfully by Nature. Just think about the bat's intriguing ability to navigate in unknown spaces and hunt for insects by listening to echoes of its calls, or about similar (albeit less well-known) abilities of toothed whales, some birds, shrews, and ultimately people. We show that, perhaps contrary to conventional wisdom, multipath propagation resulting from echoes is our friend. When we think about it the right way, it reveals essential geometric information about the sources--channel--receivers system. The key idea is to think of echoes as being more than just delayed and attenuated peaks in 1D impulse responses; they are actually additional sources with their corresponding 3D locations. This transformation allows us to forget about the abstract \emph{room}, and to replace it by more familiar \emph{point sets}. We can then engage the powerful machinery of Euclidean distance geometry. A problem that always arises is that we do not know \emph{a priori} the matching between the peaks and the points in space, and solving the inverse problem is achieved by \emph{echo sorting}---a tool we developed for learning correct labelings of echoes. This has applications beyond acoustics, whenever one deals with waves and reflections, or more generally, time-of-flight measurements. Equipped with this perspective, we first address the ``Can one hear the shape of a room?'' question, and we answer it with a qualified ``yes''. Even a single impulse response uniquely describes a convex polyhedral room, whereas a more practical algorithm to reconstruct the room's geometry uses only first-order echoes and a few microphones. Next, we show how different problems of localization benefit from echoes. The first one is multiple indoor sound source localization. Assuming the room is known, we show that discretizing the Helmholtz equation yields a system of sparse reconstruction problems linked by the common sparsity pattern. By exploiting the full bandwidth of the sources, we show that it is possible to localize multiple unknown sound sources using only a single microphone. We then look at indoor localization with known pulses from the geometric echo perspective introduced previously. Echo sorting enables localization in non-convex rooms without a line-of-sight path, and localization with a single omni-directional sensor, which is impossible without echoes. A closely related problem is microphone position calibration; we show that echoes can help even without assuming that the room is known. Using echoes, we can localize arbitrary numbers of microphones at unknown locations in an unknown room using only one source at an unknown location---for example a finger snap---and get the room's geometry as a byproduct. Our study of source localization outgrew the initial form factor when we looked at source localization with spherical microphone arrays. Spherical signals appear well beyond spherical microphone arrays; for example, any signal defined on Earth's surface lives on a sphere. This resulted in the first slight departure from the main theme: We develop the theory and algorithms for sampling sparse signals on the sphere using finite rate-of-innovation principles and apply it to various signal processing problems on the sphere
