On Multicast in Asynchronous Networks-on-Chip: Techniques, Architectures, and FPGA Implementation
In this era of exascale computing, conventional synchronous design techniques are facing unprecedented challenges. The consumer electronics market is replete with many-core systems in the range of 16 cores to thousands of cores on chip, integrating multi-billion transistors. However, with this ever increasing complexity, the traditional design approaches are facing key issues such as increasing chip power, process variability, aging, thermal problems, and scalability. An alternative paradigm that has gained significant interest in the last decade is asynchronous design. Asynchronous designs have several potential advantages: they are naturally energy proportional, burning power only when active, do not require complex clock distribution, are robust to different forms of variability, and provide ease of composability for heterogeneous platforms. Networks-on-chip (NoCs) is an interconnect paradigm that has been introduced to deal with the ever-increasing system complexity. NoCs provide a distributed, scalable, and efficient interconnect solution for today’s many-core systems. Moreover, NoCs are a natural match with asynchronous design techniques, as they separate communication infrastructure and timing from the computational elements. To this end, globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous (GALS) systems that interconnect multiple processing cores, operating at different clock speeds, using an asynchronous NoC, have gained significant interest. While asynchronous NoCs have several advantages, they also face a key challenge of supporting new types of traffic patterns. Once such pattern is multicast communication, where a source sends packets to arbitrary number of destinations. Multicast is not only common in parallel computing, such as for cache coherency, but also for emerging areas such as neuromorphic computing. This important capability has been largely missing from asynchronous NoCs. This thesis introduces several efficient multicast solutions for these interconnects. In particular, techniques, and network architectures are introduced to support high-performance and low-power multicast. Two leading network topologies are the focus: a variant mesh-of-trees (MoT) and a 2D mesh. In addition, for a more realistic implementation and analysis, as well as significantly advancing the field of asynchronous NoCs, this thesis also targets synthesis of these NoCs on commercial FPGAs. While there has been significant advances in FPGA technologies, there has been only limited research on implementing asynchronous NoCs on FPGAs. To this end, a systematic computeraided design (CAD) methodology has been introduced to efficiently and safely map asynchronous NoCs on FPGAs. Overall, this thesis makes the following three contributions. The first contribution is a multicast solution for a variant MoT network topology. This topology consists of simple low-radix switches, and has been used in high-performance computing platforms. A novel local speculation technique is introduced, where a subset of the network’s switches are speculative that always broadcast every packet. These switches are very simple and have high performance. Speculative switches are surrounded by non-speculative ones that route packets based on their destinations and also throttle any redundant copies created by the former. This hybrid network architecture achieved significant performance and power benefits over other multicast approaches. The second contribution is a multicast solution for a 2D-mesh topology, which is more complex with higher-radix switches and also is more commonly used. A novel continuous-time replication strategy is introduced to optimize the critical multi-way forking operation of a multicast transmission. In this technique, a multicast packet is first stored in an input port of a switch, from where it is sent through distinct output ports towards different destinations concurrently, at each output’s own rate and in continuous time. This strategy is shown to have significant latency and energy benefits over an approach that performs multicast using multiple distinct serial unicasts to each destination. Finally, a systematic CAD methodology is introduced to synthesize asynchronous NoCs on commercial FPGAs. A two-fold goal is targeted: correctness and high performance. For ease of implementation, only existing FPGA synthesis tools are used. Moreover, since asynchronous NoCs involve special asynchronous components, a comprehensive guide is introduced to map these elements correctly and efficiently. Two asynchronous NoC switches are synthesized using the proposed approach on a leading Xilinx FPGA in 28 nm: one that only handles unicast, and the other that also supports multicast. Both showed significant energy benefits with some performance gains over a state-of-the-art synchronous switch
Analysis of asynchronous routers for network-on-chip applications
Asynchronous circuit design has been conventionally regarded as a valid alternative to synchronous logic due to its potential for low consumption of resources, power and delay. This includes areas such as the communication infrastructure of modern multi core processors, the so-called Network-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm on which this thesis focus on. In recent times, the transistor downscaling and the increasing clock frequencies have pushed synchronous design to high static power and delay. As a result, the interest for asynchronous integrated routers and links has re-emerged, especially in fields with ultra-low power requirements such as embedded systems. In this thesis, we construct an asynchronous router using Verilog code based on architectures found in the literature. We analyze the functionality of each of the building blocks and verify the operation of the implemented routing algorithm and arbitration mechanism. In the future, the results obtained here are expected to enable a complete implementation of the router in Verilog and its posterior analysis of its scalability

Design and performance optimization of asynchronous networks-on-chip
As digital systems continue to grow in complexity, the design of conventional synchronous systems is facing unprecedented challenges. The number of transistors on individual chips is already in the multi-billion range, and a greatly increasing number of components are being integrated onto a single chip. As a consequence, modern digital designs are under strong time-to-market pressure, and there is a critical need for composable design approaches for large complex systems.
In the past two decades, networks-on-chip (NoC’s) have been a highly active research area. In a NoC-based system, functional blocks are first designed individually and may run at different clock rates. These modules are then connected through a structured network for on-chip global communication. However, due to the rigidity of centrally-clocked NoC’s, there have been bottlenecks of system scalability, energy and performance, which cannot be easily solved with synchronous approaches. As a result, there has been significant recent interest in combing the notion of asynchrony with NoC designs. Since the NoC approach inherently separates the communication infrastructure, and its timing, from computational elements, it is a natural match for an asynchronous paradigm. Asynchronous NoC’s, therefore, enable a modular and extensible system composition for an ‘object-orient’ design style.
The thesis aims to significantly advance the state-of-art and viability of asynchronous and globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous (GALS) networks-on-chip, to enable high-performance and low-energy systems. The proposed asynchronous NoC’s are nearly entirely based on standard cells, which eases their integration into industrial design flows. The contributions are instantiated in three different directions.
First, practical acceleration techniques are proposed for optimizing the system latency, in order to break through the latency bottleneck in the memory interfaces of many on-chip parallel processors. Novel asynchronous network protocols are proposed, along with concrete NoC designs. A new concept, called ‘monitoring network’, is introduced. Monitoring networks are lightweight shadow networks used for fast-forwarding anticipated traffic information, ahead of the actual packet traffic. The routers are therefore allowed to initiate and perform arbitration and channel allocation in advance. The technique is successfully applied to two topologies which belong to two different categories – a variant mesh-of-trees (MoT) structure and a 2D-mesh topology. Considerable and stable latency improvements are observed across a wide range of traffic patterns, along with moderate throughput gains.
Second, for the first time, a high-performance and low-power asynchronous NoC router is compared directly to a leading commercial synchronous counterpart in an advanced industrial technology. The asynchronous router design shows significant performance improvements, as well as area and power savings. The proposed asynchronous router integrates several advanced techniques, including a low-latency circular FIFO for buffer design, and a novel end-to-end credit-based virtual channel (VC) flow control. In addition, a semi-automated design flow is created, which uses portions of a standard synchronous tool flow.
Finally, a high-performance multi-resource asynchronous arbiter design is developed. This small but important component can be directly used in existing asynchronous NoC’s for performance optimization. In addition, this standalone design promises use in opening up new NoC directions, as well as for general use in parallel systems. In the proposed arbiter design, the allocation of a resource to a client is divided into several steps. Multiple successive client-resource pairs can be selected rapidly in pipelined sequence, and the completion of the assignments can overlap in parallel.
In sum, the thesis provides a set of advanced design solutions for performance optimization of asynchronous and GALS networks-on-chip. These solutions are at different levels, from network protocols, down to router- and component-level optimizations, which can be directly applied to existing basic asynchronous NoC designs to provide a leap in performance improvement
Broadcast-oriented wireless network-on-chip : fundamentals and feasibility

For this trend to continue, however, important scalability issues need to be solved at different levels of design. Scaling the interconnect fabric is a grand challenge by itself, as new Network-on-Chip (NoC) proposals need to overcome the performance hurdles found when dealing with the increasingly variable and heterogeneous communication demands of manycore processors. Fast and flexible NoC solutions are needed to prevent communication become a performance bottleneck, situation that would severely limit the design space at the architectural level and eventually lead to the use of software frameworks that are slow, inefficient, or less programmable.
The emergence of novel interconnect technologies has opened the door to a plethora of new NoCs promising greater scalability and architectural flexibility. In particular, wireless on-chip communication has garnered considerable attention due to its inherent broadcast capabilities, low latency, and system-level simplicity. Most of the resulting Wireless Network-on-Chip (WNoC) proposals have set the focus on leveraging the latency advantage of this paradigm by creating multiple wireless channels to interconnect far-apart cores. This strategy is effective as the complement of wired NoCs at moderate scales, but is likely to be overshadowed at larger scales by technologies such as nanophotonics unless bandwidth is unrealistically improved.
This dissertation presents the concept of Broadcast-Oriented Wireless Network-on-Chip (BoWNoC), a new approach that attempts to foster the inherent simplicity, flexibility, and broadcast capabilities of the wireless technology by integrating one on-chip antenna and transceiver per processor core. This paradigm is part of a broader hybrid vision where the BoWNoC serves latency-critical and broadcast traffic, tightly coupled to a wired plane oriented to large flows of data. By virtue of its scalable broadcast support, BoWNoC may become the key enabler of a wealth of unconventional hardware architectures and algorithmic approaches, eventually leading to a significant improvement of the performance, energy efficiency, scalability and programmability of manycore chips.
The present work aims not only to lay the fundamentals of the BoWNoC paradigm, but also to demonstrate its viability from the electronic implementation, network design, and multiprocessor architecture perspectives. An exploration at the physical level of design validates the feasibility of the approach at millimeter-wave bands in the short term, and then suggests the use of graphene-based antennas in the terahertz band in the long term. At the link level, this thesis provides an insightful context analysis that is used, afterwards, to drive the design of a lightweight protocol that reliably serves broadcast traffic with substantial latency improvements over state-of-the-art NoCs. At the network level, our hybrid vision is evaluated putting emphasis on the flexibility provided at the network interface level, showing outstanding speedups for a wide set of traffic patterns. At the architecture level, the potential impact of the BoWNoC paradigm on the design of manycore chips is not only qualitatively discussed in general, but also quantitatively assessed in a particular architecture for fast synchronization. High performance communication on reconfigurable clusters
High Performance Computing (HPC) has matured to where it is an essential third pillar, along with theory and experiment, in most domains of science and engineering. Communication latency is a key factor that is limiting the performance of HPC, but can be addressed by integrating communication into accelerators. This integration allows accelerators to communicate with each other without CPU interactions, and even bypassing the network stack. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are the accelerators that currently best integrate communication with computation. The large number of Multi-gigabit Transceivers (MGTs) on most high-end FPGAs can provide high-bandwidth and low-latency inter-FPGA connections. Additionally, the reconfigurable FPGA fabric enables tight coupling between computation kernel and network interface.
Our thesis is that an application-aware communication infrastructure for a multi-FPGA system makes substantial progress in solving the HPC communication bottleneck. This dissertation aims to provide an application-aware solution for communication infrastructure for FPGA-centric clusters. Specifically, our solution demonstrates application-awareness across multiple levels in the network stack, including low-level link protocols, router microarchitectures, routing algorithms, and applications.
We start by investigating the low-level link protocol and the impact of its latency variance on performance. Our results demonstrate that, although some link jitter is always present, we can still assume near-synchronous communication on an FPGA-cluster. This provides the necessary condition for statically-scheduled routing. We then propose two novel router microarchitectures for two different kinds of workloads: a wormhole Virtual Channel (VC)-based router for workloads with dynamic communication, and a statically-scheduled Virtual Output Queueing (VOQ)-based router for workloads with static communication. For the first (VC-based) router, we propose a framework that generates application-aware router configurations. Our results show that, by adding application-awareness into router configuration, the network performance of FPGA clusters can be substantially improved. For the second (VOQ-based) router, we propose a novel offline collective routing algorithm. This shows a significant advantage over a state-of-the-art collective routing algorithm.
We apply our communication infrastructure to a critical strong-scaling HPC kernel, the 3D FFT. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of our design is faster than that on CPUs and GPUs by at least one order of magnitude (achieving strong scaling for the target applications). Surprisingly, the FPGA cluster performance is similar to that of an ASIC-cluster. We also implement the 3D FFT on another multi-FPGA platform: the Microsoft Catapult II cloud. Its performance is also comparable or superior to CPU and GPU HPC clusters. The second application we investigate is Molecular Dynamics Simulation (MD). We model MD on both FPGA clouds and clusters. We find that combining processing and general communication in the same device leads to extremely promising performance and the prospect of MD simulations well into the us/day range with a commodity cloud
SpiNNaker - A Spiking Neural Network Architecture
20 years in conception and 15 in construction, the SpiNNaker project has delivered the world’s largest neuromorphic computing platform incorporating over a million ARM mobile phone processors and capable of modelling spiking neural networks of the scale of a mouse brain in biological real time. This machine, hosted at the University of Manchester in the UK, is freely available under the auspices of the EU Flagship Human Brain Project. This book tells the story of the origins of the machine, its development and its deployment, and the immense software development effort that has gone into making it openly available and accessible to researchers and students the world over. It also presents exemplar applications from ‘Talk’, a SpiNNaker-controlled robotic exhibit at the Manchester Art Gallery as part of ‘The Imitation Game’, a set of works commissioned in 2016 in honour of Alan Turing, through to a way to solve hard computing problems using stochastic neural networks. The book concludes with a look to the future, and the SpiNNaker-2 machine which is yet to come

This book tells the story of the origins of the machine, its development and its deployment, and the immense software development effort that has gone into making it openly available and accessible to researchers and students the world over. It also presents exemplar applications from ‘Talk’, a SpiNNaker-controlled robotic exhibit at the Manchester Art Gallery as part of ‘The Imitation Game’, a set of works commissioned in 2016 in honour of Alan Turing, through to a way to solve hard computing problems using stochastic neural networks. The book concludes with a look to the future, and the SpiNNaker-2 machine which is yet to come
On the simulation and design of manycore CMPs
The progression of Moore’s Law has resulted in both embedded and performance
computing systems which use an ever increasing number of processing cores integrated
in a single chip. Commercial systems are now available which provide hundreds
of cores, and academics have proposed architectures for up to 1024 cores. Embedded
multicores are increasingly popular as it is easier to guarantee hard-realtime constraints
using individual cores dedicated for tasks, than to use traditional time-multiplexed processing.
However, finding the optimal hardware configuration to meet these requirements
at minimum cost requires extensive trial and error approaches to investigate the
design space.
This thesis tackles the problems encountered in the design of these large scale multicore
systems by first addressing the problem of fast, detailed micro-architectural simulation.
Initially addressing embedded systems, this work exploits the lack of hardware
cache-coherence support in many deeply embedded systems to increase the available
parallelism in the simulation. Then, through partitioning the NoC and using packet
counting and cycle skipping reduces the amount of computation required to accurately
model the NoC interconnect. In combination, this enables simulation speeds significantly
higher than the state of the art, while maintaining less error, when compared
to real hardware, than any similar simulator. Simulation speeds reach up to 370MIPS
(Million (target) Instructions Per Second), or 110MHz, which is better than typical
FPGA prototypes, and approaching final ASIC production speeds. This is achieved
while maintaining an error of only 2.1%, significantly lower than other similar simulators.
The thesis continues by scaling the simulator past large embedded systems up to
64-1024 core processors, adding support for coherent architectures using the same
packet counting techniques along with low overhead context switching to enable the
simulation of such large systems with stricter synchronisation requirements. The new
interconnect model was partitioned to enable parallel simulation to further improve
simulation speeds in a manner which did not sacrifice any accuracy.
These innovations were leveraged to investigate significant novel energy saving optimisations
to the coherency protocol, processor ISA, and processor micro-architecture.
By introducing a new instruction, with the name wait-on-address, the energy spent during
spin-wait style synchronisation events can be significantly reduced. This functions
by putting the core into a low-power idle state while the cache line of the indicated
address is monitored for coherency action. Upon an update or invalidation (or traditional
timer or external interrupts) the core will resume execution, but the active
energy of running the core pipeline and repeatedly accessing the data and instruction
caches is effectively reduced to static idle power. The thesis also shows that existing
combined software-hardware schemes to track data regions which do not require coherency
can adequately address the directory-associativity problem, and introduces a
new coherency sharer encoding which reduces the energy consumed by sharer invalidations
when sharers are grouped closely together, such as would be the case with a
system running many tasks with a small degree of parallelism in each.
The research concludes by using the extremely fast simulation speeds developed to
produce a large set of training data, collecting various runtime and energy statistics for
a wide range of embedded applications on a huge diverse range of potential MPSoC
designs. This data was used to train a series of machine learning based models which
were then evaluated on their capacity to predict performance characteristics of unseen
workload combinations across the explored MPSoC design space, using only two sample
simulations, with promising results from some of the machine learning techniques.
The models were then used to produce a ranking of predicted performance across the
design space, and on average Random Forest was able to predict the best design within
89% of the runtime performance of the actual best tested design, and better than 93%
of the alternative design space. When predicting for a weighted metric of energy, delay
and area, Random Forest on average produced results within 93% of the optimum
result.
In summary this thesis improves upon the state of the art for cycle accurate multicore
simulation, introduces novel energy saving changes the the ISA and microarchitecture
of future multicore processors, and demonstrates the viability of machine
learning techniques to significantly accelerate the design space exploration required to
bring a new manycore design to market
Intrusion tolerance in large scale networks

a correct and uninterrupted service. Therefore, Byzantine Fault-Tolerant (BFT) algorithms have
received considerable attention in the last years. A service is replicated over several servers and
can survive even in the presence of a bounded number of Byzantine failures.
The main motivation for this thesis is that for a replicated service to be fault-tolerant,
common mode failures have to be avoided. More specifically, the thesis is concerned with
common mode failures caused by natural disasters, power outages and physical attacks, which
have to be prevented by scattering replicas geographically. This requires the sites where the
replicas reside to be connected by a wide-area network (WAN) like the Internet.
Unfortunately, when the replicas are distributed geographically the performance of current
BFT algorithms is affected by the lower bandwidths, and the higher and more heterogeneous
network latencies. In order to deal with these limitations this thesis introduces novel BFT
algorithms that are simultaneously efficient and secure. Some algorithms of this thesis are based
on a hybrid fault model, i.e., considering that a part of the system is secure by construction. A
notable contribution of this thesis is the definition and implementation of a minimal trusted
service: the Unique Sequential Identifier Generator (USIG).
The thesis describes how to implement a 2 f +1 Byzantine consensus algorithm using a
2 f +1 reliable multicast algorithm that requires a trusted service, that is an abstract version
of the USIG. Then, the USIG service and the reliable multicast primitive are applied as a core
component to implement two novel BFT algorithms introduced in this thesis: MinBFT and
MinZyzzyva. These BFT algorithms are minimal in terms of number of replicas, complexity of
the trusted service used, and number of communication steps. In order to mitigate performance
degradation attacks, this thesis proposes the use of a rotating primary defining a novel BFT
algorithm, Spinning, that is less vulnerable to attacks caused by a faulty primary and attains a
throughput similar to the baseline algorithm in the area. Finally, the mechanisms and techniques developed in this thesis are combined in order to
define EBAWA, a novel BFT algorithm that is suitable for supporting the execution of wide-area
replicated services.O crescimento da dependência na utilização de serviços informáticos em redes de larga escala
demanda sistemas que forneçam um serviço correcto e ininterrupto. Por este motivo,
algoritmos tolerantes a faltas bizantinas (BFT) têm recebido considerável atenção nos últimos
anos. A ideia fundamental destes algoritmos é replicar um determinado serviço num conjunto
de servidores, assegurando a sua operação contínua mesmo na presença de um número limitado
de servidores faltosos. Cada servidor é uma réplica, uma máquina de estados determinística que
executa operações em resposta a requisições realizadas por clientes.
Para que serviços replicados sejam tolerantes a faltas, modos comuns de falhas devem
ser evitados, essa ´e a principal motivação desta tese. Mais especificamente, a tese trata de
falhas causadas por desastres naturais, falta de energia e ataques físicos. Para que a ocorrência
destas falhas afecte um número limitado de servidores é necessário distribuir as réplicas
geograficamente. Esta distribuição, requer que os locais onde se situam as réplicas sejam
conectados por uma rede de larga-escala (WAN), como a Internet.
Infelizmente, quando as réplicas estão distribuídas geograficamente o desempenho dos
algoritmos BFT actuais é afectado pelas limitações de largura de banda e latências heterogéneas,
típicas em redes de larga-escala. A fim de tratar destas limitações esta tese introduz novos
algoritmos BFT que são simultaneamente eficientes e seguros. Alguns destes algoritmos são
baseados em um modelo de faltas híbrido, por exemplo, parte do sistema ´e considerado seguro
pela sua construção. Uma importante contribuição desta tese é a definição e concretização de
um serviço confiável mínimo: o gerador de identificador único e sequencial (USIG).
A tese descreve como concretizar algoritmos de consenso bizantinos com 2 f +1 processos,
usando um algoritmo de reliable multicast que requer um componente confiável, uma abstração
do USIG. O serviço USIG e a primitiva de reliable multicast são aplicados como componentes
nucleares na concretização de dois novos algoritmos BFT introduzidos nesta tese: MinBFT e
MinZyzzyva. Estes algoritmos são mínimos em termos de número de réplicas, complexidade do
componente confiável e número de passos de comunicação.
A fim de mitigar os ataques de degradação de desempenho esta tese propõe o uso de um primário rotativo, definindo assim um novo algoritmo BFT, o Spinning. Al´em de ser menos
vulnerável a ataques causados por primários faltosos, o Spinning atinge um débito similar ao
algoritmo base. Finalmente, os mecanismos e técnicas desenvolvidos ao longo desta tese são
combinados com o objectivo de definir o EBAWA, um novo algoritmo BFT que é adequado para
