    Post Processing Wrapper Generated Tables For Labeling Anonymous Datasets

    A large number of wrappers generate tables without column names for human consumption because the meaning of the columns are apparent from the context and easy for humans to understand, but in emerging applications, labels are needed for autonomous assignment and schema mapping where machine tries to understand the tables. Autonomous label assignment is critical in volume data processing where ad hoc mediation, extraction and querying is involved. We propose an algorithm Lads for Labeling Anonymous Datasets, which can holistically label/annotate tabular Web document. The algorithm has been tested on anonymous datasets from a number of sites, yielding very promising results. We report here our experimental results on anonymous datasets from a number of sites e.g., music, movie, watch, political, automobile, synthetic obtained through different search engine such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. The comparative probabilities of attributes being candidate labels are presented which seem to be very promising, achieved as high as 98% probability of assigning good label to anonymous attribute. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first of its kind for label assignment based on multiple search engines\u27 recommendation. We have introduced a new paradigm, Web search engine based annotator which can holistically label tabular Web document. We categorize column into three types: disjoint set column (DSC), repeated prefix/suffix column (RPS) and numeric column (NUM). For labeling DSC column, our method rely on hit counts from Web search engine (e.g., Google, Yahoo and MSN). We formulate speculative queries to Web search engine and use the principle of disambiguation by maximal evidence to come up with our solution. Our algorithm Lads is guaranteed to work for the disjoint set column. Experimental results from large number of sites in different domains and subjective evaluation of our approach show that the proposed algorithm Lads works fairly well. In this line we claim that our algorithm Lads is robust. In order to assign label for the Disjoint Set Column, we need a candidate set of labels (e.g., label library) which can be collected on-the-fly from user SQL query variable as well as from Web Form label tag. We classify a set of homogeneous anonymous datasets into meaningful label and at the same time cluster those labels into a label library by learning user expectation and materialization of her expectation from a site. Previous work in this field rely on extraction ontologies, we eliminate the need for domain specific ontologies as we could extract label from the Web form. Our system is novel in the sense that we accommodate label from the user query variable. We hypothesize that our proposed algorithm Lads will do a good job for autonomous label assignment. We bridge the gap between two orthogonal research directions: wrapper generation and ontology generation from Web site (i.e., label extraction). We are NOT aware of any such prior work that address to connect these two orthogonal research for value added services such as online comparison shopping

    Augmented Behavioral Annotation Tools, with Application to Multimodal Datasets and Models: A Systematic Review

    Annotation tools are an essential component in the creation of datasets for machine learning purposes. Annotation tools have evolved greatly since the turn of the century, and now commonly include collaborative features to divide labor efficiently, as well as automation employed to amplify human efforts. Recent developments in machine learning models, such as Transformers, allow for training upon very large and sophisticated multimodal datasets and enable generalization across domains of knowledge. These models also herald an increasing emphasis on prompt engineering to provide qualitative fine-tuning upon the model itself, adding a novel emerging layer of direct machine learning annotation. These capabilities enable machine intelligence to recognize, predict, and emulate human behavior with much greater accuracy and nuance, a noted shortfall of which have contributed to algorithmic injustice in previous techniques. However, the scale and complexity of training data required for multimodal models presents engineering challenges. Best practices for conducting annotation for large multimodal models in the most safe and ethical, yet efficient, manner have not been established. This paper presents a systematic literature review of crowd and machine learning augmented behavioral annotation methods to distill practices that may have value in multimodal implementations, cross-correlated across disciplines. Research questions were defined to provide an overview of the evolution of augmented behavioral annotation tools in the past, in relation to the present state of the art.     Learning From Almost No Data

    The tremendous recent growth in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning has largely been tied to the availability of big data and massive amounts of compute. The increasingly popular approach of training large neural networks on large datasets has provided great returns, but it leaves behind the multitude of researchers, companies, and practitioners who do not have access to sufficient funding, compute power, or volume of data. This thesis aims to rectify this growing imbalance by probing the limits of what machine learning and deep learning methods can achieve with small data. What knowledge does a dataset contain? At the highest level, a dataset is just a collection of samples: images, text, etc. Yet somehow, when we train models on these datasets, they are able to find patterns, make inferences, detect similarities, and otherwise generalize to samples that they have previously never seen. This suggests that datasets may contain some kind of intrinsic knowledge about the systems or distributions from which they are sampled. Moreover, it appears that this knowledge is somehow distributed and duplicated across the samples; we intuitively expect that removing an image from a large training set will have virtually no impact on the final model performance. We develop a framework to explain efficient generalization around three principles: information sharing, information repackaging, and information injection. We use this framework to propose `less than one'-shot learning, an extreme form of few-shot learning where a learner must recognize N classes from M < N training examples. To achieve this extreme level of efficiency, we develop new framework-consistent methods and theory for lost data restoration, for dataset size reduction, and for few-shot learning with deep neural networks and other popular machine learning models

    Pretrained Transformers for Text Ranking: BERT and Beyond

    The goal of text ranking is to generate an ordered list of texts retrieved from a corpus in response to a query. Although the most common formulation of text ranking is search, instances of the task can also be found in many natural language processing applications. This survey provides an overview of text ranking with neural network architectures known as transformers, of which BERT is the best-known example. The combination of transformers and self-supervised pretraining has been responsible for a paradigm shift in natural language processing (NLP), information retrieval (IR), and beyond. In this survey, we provide a synthesis of existing work as a single point of entry for practitioners who wish to gain a better understanding of how to apply transformers to text ranking problems and researchers who wish to pursue work in this area. We cover a wide range of modern techniques, grouped into two high-level categories: transformer models that perform reranking in multi-stage architectures and dense retrieval techniques that perform ranking directly. There are two themes that pervade our survey: techniques for handling long documents, beyond typical sentence-by-sentence processing in NLP, and techniques for addressing the tradeoff between effectiveness (i.e., result quality) and efficiency (e.g., query latency, model and index size). Although transformer architectures and pretraining techniques are recent innovations, many aspects of how they are applied to text ranking are relatively well understood and represent mature techniques. However, there remain many open research questions, and thus in addition to laying out the foundations of pretrained transformers for text ranking, this survey also attempts to prognosticate where the field is heading

    Compréhension de contenus visuels par analyse conjointe du contenu et des usages

    Dans cette thèse, nous traitons de la compréhension de contenus visuels, qu’il s’agisse d’images, de vidéos ou encore de contenus 3D. On entend par compréhension la capacité à inférer des informations sémantiques sur le contenu visuel. L’objectif de ce travail est d’étudier des méthodes combinant deux approches : 1) l’analyse automatique des contenus et 2) l’analyse des interactions liées à l’utilisation de ces contenus (analyse des usages, en plus bref). Dans un premier temps, nous étudions l’état de l’art issu des communautés de la vision par ordinateur et du multimédia. Il y a 20 ans, l’approche dominante visait une compréhension complètement automatique des images. Cette approche laisse aujourd’hui plus de place à différentes formes d’interventions humaines. Ces dernières peuvent se traduire par la constitution d’une base d’apprentissage annotée, par la résolution interactive de problèmes (par exemple de détection ou de segmentation) ou encore par la collecte d’informations implicites issues des usages du contenu. Il existe des liens riches et complexes entre supervision humaine d’algorithmes automatiques et adaptation des contributions humaines via la mise en œuvre d’algorithmes automatiques. Ces liens sont à l’origine de questions de recherche modernes : comment motiver des intervenants humains ? Comment concevoir des scénarii interactifs pour lesquels les interactions contribuent à comprendre le contenu manipulé ? Comment vérifier la qualité des traces collectées ? Comment agréger les données d’usage ? Comment fusionner les données d’usage avec celles, plus classiques, issues d’une analyse automatique ? Notre revue de la littérature aborde ces questions et permet de positionner les contributions de cette thèse. Celles-ci s’articulent en deux grandes parties. La première partie de nos travaux revisite la détection de régions importantes ou saillantes au travers de retours implicites d’utilisateurs qui visualisent ou acquièrent des con- tenus visuels. En 2D d’abord, plusieurs interfaces de vidéos interactives (en particulier la vidéo zoomable) sont conçues pour coordonner des analyses basées sur le contenu avec celles basées sur l’usage. On généralise ces résultats en 3D avec l’introduction d’un nouveau détecteur de régions saillantes déduit de la capture simultanée de vidéos de la même performance artistique publique (spectacles de danse, de chant etc.) par de nombreux utilisateurs. La seconde contribution de notre travail vise une compréhension sémantique d’images fixes. Nous exploitons les données récoltées à travers un jeu, Ask’nSeek, que nous avons créé. Les interactions élémentaires (comme les clics) et les données textuelles saisies par les joueurs sont, comme précédemment, rapprochées d’analyses automatiques des images. Nous montrons en particulier l’intérêt d’interactions révélatrices des relations spatiales entre différents objets détectables dans une même scène. Après la détection des objets d’intérêt dans une scène, nous abordons aussi le problème, plus ambitieux, de la segmentation. ABSTRACT : This thesis focuses on the problem of understanding visual contents, which can be images, videos or 3D contents. Understanding means that we aim at inferring semantic information about the visual content. The goal of our work is to study methods that combine two types of approaches: 1) automatic content analysis and 2) an analysis of how humans interact with the content (in other words, usage analysis). We start by reviewing the state of the art from both Computer Vision and Multimedia communities. Twenty years ago, the main approach was aiming at a fully automatic understanding of images. This approach today gives way to different forms of human intervention, whether it is through the constitution of annotated datasets, or by solving problems interactively (e.g. detection or segmentation), or by the implicit collection of information gathered from content usages. These different types of human intervention are at the heart of modern research questions: how to motivate human contributors? How to design interactive scenarii that will generate interactions that contribute to content understanding? How to check or ensure the quality of human contributions? How to aggregate human contributions? How to fuse inputs obtained from usage analysis with traditional outputs from content analysis? Our literature review addresses these questions and allows us to position the contributions of this thesis. In our first set of contributions we revisit the detection of important (or salient) regions through implicit feedback from users that either consume or produce visual contents. In 2D, we develop several interfaces of interactive video (e.g. zoomable video) in order to coordinate content analysis and usage analysis. We also generalize these results to 3D by introducing a new detector of salient regions that builds upon simultaneous video recordings of the same public artistic performance (dance show, chant, etc.) by multiple users. The second contribution of our work aims at a semantic understanding of fixed images. With this goal in mind, we use data gathered through a game, Ask’nSeek, that we created. Elementary interactions (such as clicks) together with textual input data from players are, as before, mixed with automatic analysis of images. In particular, we show the usefulness of interactions that help revealing spatial relations between different objects in a scene. After studying the problem of detecting objects on a scene, we also adress the more ambitious problem of segmentation

    Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
