    Wavelet-Based High-Order Adaptive Modeling of Lossy Interconnects

    Abstract—This paper presents a numerical-modeling strategy for simulation of fast transients in lossy electrical interconnects. The proposed algorithm makes use of wavelet representations of voltages and currents along the structure, with the aim of reducing the computational complexity of standard time-domain solvers. A special weak procedure for the implementation of possibly dynamic and nonlinear boundary conditions allows to preserve stability as well as a high approximation order, thus leading to very accurate schemes. On the other hand, the wavelet expansion allows the computation of the solution by using few significant coefficients which are automatically determined at each time step. A dynamically refinable mesh is then used to perform a sparse time-stepping. Several numerical results illustrate the high efficiency of the proposed algorithm, which has been tuned and optimized for best performance in fast digital applications typically found on modern PCB structures.     Deception and Convergence of Opinions Part 2: the Effects of Reproducibility

    Recently Martins (Martins 2005) published an article in this journal analyzing the opinion dynamics of a neutral observer deciding between two competing scientific theories (Theory A and Theory B). The observer could not perform any experiments to verify either theory, but instead had to form its opinion solely by reading published articles reporting the experimental results of others. The observer was assumed to be rational (modeled with simple Bayesian rules) and the article examined how the observer\'s confidence in the correctness of the two theories changed as a function of number of articles read in support of each theory, and how much, if any, deception was believed to be present in the published articles. A key (and somewhat disturbing) result of this work was that for even relatively small amounts of perceived deception in the source articles, the observer could never be reasonably sure of which theory (A or B) was correct, even in the limit of the observer reading an infinite number of such articles. In this work we make a small extension to the Martins article by examining what happens when the observer only considers experimental results which have been reproduced by multiple parties. We find that even if the observer only requires that the articles he or she reads be verified by one additional party, its confidence in one of the two theories can converge to unity, regardless of the amount of amount of deception believed to be present in the source articles.Opinion Dynamics, Epistemology, Rational Agents, Deception, Confirmation Theory

    Robust on-off pulse control of flexible space vehicles

    The on-off reaction jet control system is often used for attitude and orbital maneuvering of various spacecraft. Future space vehicles such as the orbital transfer vehicles, orbital maneuvering vehicles, and space station will extensively use reaction jets for orbital maneuvering and attitude stabilization. The proposed robust fuel- and time-optimal control algorithm is used for a three-mass spacing model of flexible spacecraft. A fuel-efficient on-off control logic is developed for robust rest-to-rest maneuver of a flexible vehicle with minimum excitation of structural modes. The first part of this report is concerned with the problem of selecting a proper pair of jets for practical trade-offs among the maneuvering time, fuel consumption, structural mode excitation, and performance robustness. A time-optimal control problem subject to parameter robustness constraints is formulated and solved. The second part of this report deals with obtaining parameter insensitive fuel- and time- optimal control inputs by solving a constrained optimization problem subject to robustness constraints. It is shown that sensitivity to modeling errors can be significantly reduced by the proposed, robustified open-loop control approach. The final part of this report deals with sliding mode control design for uncertain flexible structures. The benchmark problem of a flexible structure is used as an example for the feedback sliding mode controller design with bounded control inputs and robustness to parameter variations is investigated

    An efficient method to include equality constraints in branch current distribution system state estimation

    Distribution system state estimation is a fundamental tool for the management and control functions envisaged for future distribution grids. The design of accurate and efficient algorithms is essential to provide estimates compliant with the needed accuracy requirements and to allow the real-time operation of the different applications. To achieve such requirements, peculiarities of the distribution systems have to be duly taken into account. Branch current-based estimators are an efficient solution for performing state estimation in radial or weakly meshed networks. In this paper, a simple technique, which exploits the particular formulation of the branch current estimators, is proposed to deal with zero injection and mesh constraints. Tests performed on an unbalanced IEEE 123-bus network show the capability of the proposed method to further improve efficiency performance of branch current estimators

    Modern Aerocapture Guidance to Enable Reduced-Lift Vehicles at Neptune

    Aerocapture is covered extensively in the literature as means of achieving orbital insertion with dramatic mass-saving results compared to fully-propulsive systems. One of the primary obstacles facing aerocapture is the inherent uncertainty associated with passing through a planets upper atmosphere. In-flight dispersions due to delivery errors, environment variables, and aerodynamic performance impose a large flight envelope. System studies for aerocapture often select high lift-to-drag ratios to compensate for these uncertainties. However, modern predictor-corrector guidance strategies have shown promise in recent years to provide robust control schemes in-situ. These algorithms do not rely on a pre-calculated reference trajectory and instead employ a numerical optimizer to continuously solve nonlinear equations of motion each guidance cycle. Numerical predictor-corrector strategies may provide considerable accuracy over heritage guidance schemes. The goal of this study is reproduce a landmark study of Neptune aerocapture and apply modern guidance to illustrate relative performance improvements and cost-saving potential. Capture constraints based on the theoretical corridor width are considered. Results indicate that heritage vehicles with moderate lift-to-drag ratios, lower than previous studies have indicated, may prove viable for aerocapture at Neptune

    Carrier-phase GNSS attitude determination and control system for unmanned aerial vehicle applications

    This paper presents the results of a research activity performed by Cranfield University to assess the potential of carrierphase Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for attitude determination and control of small to medium size Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Both deterministic and recursive (optimal estimation) algorithms are developed for combining multiple attitude measurements obtained from different observation points (i.e., antenna locations), and their efficiencies are tested in various dynamic conditions. The proposed algorithms converge rapidly and produce the required output even during high dynamics manoeuvres. Results of theoretical performance analysis and simulation activities are presented in this paper, with emphasis on the advantages of the GNSS interferometric approach in UAV applications (i.e., low cost, high data-rate, low volume/weight, low signal processing requirements, etc.). Modelling and simulation activities focussed on the AEROSONDE UAV platform and considered the possible augmentation provided by interferometric GNSS techniques to a low-cost and low-weight/volume integrated navigation system recently developed at Cranfield University, which employs a Vision-based Navigation (VBN) system, a Micro-Electro-mechanical Sensor (MEMS) based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and code-range GNSS (i.e., GPS and GALILEO) for position and velocity computations. The integrated VBN-IMU-GNSS (VIG) system is augmented by using the inteferometric GNSS Attitude Determination (GAD) and a comparison of the performance achievable with the VIG and VIG/GAD integrated Navigation and Guidance Systems (NGS) is presented. Finally, the data provided by these NGS are used to optimise the design of an hybrid controller employing Fuzzy Logic and Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) techniques for the AEROSONDE UAV
