Knowledge-based Query Expansion in Real-Time Microblog Search
Since the length of microblog texts, such as tweets, is strictly limited to
140 characters, traditional Information Retrieval techniques suffer from the
vocabulary mismatch problem severely and cannot yield good performance in the
context of microblogosphere. To address this critical challenge, in this paper,
we propose a new language modeling approach for microblog retrieval by
inferring various types of context information. In particular, we expand the
query using knowledge terms derived from Freebase so that the expanded one can
better reflect users' search intent. Besides, in order to further satisfy
users' real-time information need, we incorporate temporal evidences into the
expansion method, which can boost recent tweets in the retrieval results with
respect to a given topic. Experimental results on two official TREC Twitter
corpora demonstrate the significant superiority of our approach over baseline

End-to-End Quantum-like Language Models with Application to Question Answering
Language Modeling (LM) is a fundamental research topic ina range of areas. Recently, inspired by quantum theory, a novel Quantum Language Model (QLM) has been proposed for Information Retrieval (IR). In this paper, we aim to broaden the theoretical and practical basis of QLM. We develop a Neural Network based Quantum-like Language Model (NNQLM) and apply it to Question Answering. Specifically, based on word embeddings, we design a new density matrix, which represents a sentence (e.g., a question or an answer) and encodes a mixture of semantic subspaces. Such a density matrix, together with a joint representation of the question and the answer, can be integrated into neural network architectures (e.g., 2-dimensional convolutional neural networks). Experiments on the TREC-QA and WIKIQA datasets have verified the effectiveness of our proposed models
Speech and hand transcribed retrieval
This paper describes the issues and preliminary work involved
in the creation of an information retrieval system that will
manage the retrieval from collections composed of both speech
recognised and ordinary text documents. In previous work, it
has been shown that because of recognition errors, ordinary
documents are generally retrieved in preference to recognised
ones. Means of correcting or eliminating the observed bias is
the subject of this paper. Initial ideas and some preliminary
results are presented
Efficient & Effective Selective Query Rewriting with Efficiency Predictions
To enhance effectiveness, a user's query can be rewritten internally by the search engine in many ways, for example by applying proximity, or by expanding the query with related terms. However, approaches that benefit effectiveness often have a negative impact on efficiency, which has impacts upon the user satisfaction, if the query is excessively slow. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for using the predicted execution time of various query rewritings to select between alternatives on a per-query basis, in a manner that ensures both effectiveness and efficiency. In particular, we propose the prediction of the execution time of ephemeral (e.g., proximity) posting lists generated from uni-gram inverted index posting lists, which are used in establishing the permissible query rewriting alternatives that may execute in the allowed time. Experiments examining both the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach demonstrate that a 49% decrease in mean response time (and 62% decrease in 95th-percentile response time) can be attained without significantly hindering the effectiveness of the search engine
