    Generalized Perceptual Linear Prediction (gPLP) Features for Animal Vocalization Analysis

    A new feature extraction model, generalized perceptual linear prediction (gPLP), is developed to calculate a set of perceptually relevant features for digital signal analysis of animalvocalizations. The gPLP model is a generalized adaptation of the perceptual linear prediction model, popular in human speech processing, which incorporates perceptual information such as frequency warping and equal loudness normalization into the feature extraction process. Since such perceptual information is available for a number of animal species, this new approach integrates that information into a generalized model to extract perceptually relevant features for a particular species. To illustrate, qualitative and quantitative comparisons are made between the species-specific model, generalized perceptual linear prediction (gPLP), and the original PLP model using a set of vocalizations collected from captive African elephants (Loxodonta africana) and wild beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas). The models that incorporate perceptional information outperform the original human-based models in both visualization and classification tasks

    Optimized Camera Handover Scheme in Free Viewpoint Video Streaming

    Free-viewpoint video (FVV) is a promising approach that allows users to control their viewpoint and generate virtual views from any desired perspective. The individual user viewpoints are synthetized from two or more camera streams and correspondent depth sequences. In case of continuous viewpoint changes, the camera inputs of the view synthesis process must be changed in a seamless way, in order to avoid the starvation of the viewpoint synthesizer algorithm. Starvation occurs when the desired user viewpoint cannot be synthetized with the currently streamed camera views, thus the FVV playout interrupts. In this paper we proposed three camera handover schemes (TCC, MA, SA) based on viewpoint prediction in order to minimize the probability of playout stalls and find the tradeoff between the image quality and the camera handover frequency. Our simulation results show that the introduced camera switching methods can reduce the handover frequency with more than 40%, hence the viewpoint synthesis starvation and the playout interruption can be minimized. By providing seamless viewpoint changes, the quality of experience can be significantly improved, making the new FVV service more attractive in the future

    An Experimental Evaluation of Nearest Neighbour Time Series Classification

    Data mining research into time series classification (TSC) has focussed on alternative distance measures for nearest neighbour classifiers. It is standard practice to use 1-NN with Euclidean or dynamic time warping (DTW) distance as a straw man for comparison. As part of a wider investigation into elastic distance measures for TSC~\cite{lines14elastic}, we perform a series of experiments to test whether this standard practice is valid. Specifically, we compare 1-NN classifiers with Euclidean and DTW distance to standard classifiers, examine whether the performance of 1-NN Euclidean approaches that of 1-NN DTW as the number of cases increases, assess whether there is any benefit of setting kk for kk-NN through cross validation whether it is worth setting the warping path for DTW through cross validation and finally is it better to use a window or weighting for DTW. Based on experiments on 77 problems, we conclude that 1-NN with Euclidean distance is fairly easy to beat but 1-NN with DTW is not, if window size is set through cross validation
