The role of ICTs and public-private cooperation for cultural heritage tourism. The case of Smart Marca / Il ruolo delle ICT e della cooperazione pubblico-privati per il turismo culturale. Il caso di Smart Marca

This paper analyzes the opportunities related to public-private cooperation for the implementation of information communication technologies (ICTs) to promote cultural heritage tourism. After a literature review on the role of cooperation between private and public sectors and the most relevant information communication technologies (ICTs) for the promotion of cultural heritage, the analysis moves to travel apps, by illustrating features, main trends and some applications of this technology to cultural heritage and tourism. In the second part, the connection between tourism, cultural heritage and digital technologies is analyzed through the description of Smart Marca app, which, starting from the cooperation between local public and private entities, exploited ICTs to promote cultural tourism in Fermo area (Marche Region, Italy).  Il contributo analizza le potenzialità della cooperazione pubblico-privata nella progettazione e realizzazione di nuove tecnologie dell’informazione (ICT) per la promozione del turismo del patrimonio culturale. Dopo una rassegna della letteratura dedicata al ruolo della collaborazione tra pubblico e privato e delle ICT per la promozione del patrimonio culturale e lo sviluppo turistico di un territorio, l’articolo focalizza l’attenzione sulle applicazioni mobili di viaggio, illustrandone trend e caratteristiche, nonché alcuni esempi di applicazione di questa tecnologia al patrimonio culturale e al turismo. The impact of accommodation taxes on outbound travel demand from the United Kingdom to European destinations

Despite the progressive introduction of accommodation taxes in many European cities, there is no consensus in the literature as to whether they have positive or negative effects. This may be related to the lack of estimates of the elasticity of visitor demand to accommodation taxes. To fill this gap, we carry out two panel-data regressions using a data set of airline travelers from UK cities to Spanish, French, and Italian destinations between 2012 and 2018. The results from the two-stage least squares regressions indicate that UK international travelers are indeed sensitive to hotel taxes. However, the impact of these taxes differs between peak and off-peak periods and across destination countries, with French destinations showing the most negative effect on visitor flows. The analysis of tax elasticities at a destination level also reveals the lack of a significant negative impact on visitor flows to major cities like Venice or Barcelona

Reinterpreting the Laurel Hill Cemetery Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Laurel Hill Cemetery is an ideal candidate for an investigation of an innovative interpretation regime. It is a complex landscape that contains a wide variety of resources. Those resources cover a range of interests, holding an appeal for a broad potential audience. Importantly, the site is also recognized as one of great national and cultural significance. Formal recognition of Laurel Hill Cemetery\u27s cultural significance and contribution to the rural cemetery movement came when it was designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1998. It was the first cemetery in the nation to be so designated and remains today an impressive 78-acre sculpture garden and historical resource. Like so many of America\u27s cultural resources, however, the promotion and interpretation of the Laurel Hill Cemetery is not without difficulty
