Abstraction and context in concept representation
This paper develops the notion of abstraction in the context of the psychology of concepts, and discusses its relation to context dependence in knowledge representation. Three general approaches to modelling conceptual knowledge from the domain of cognitive psychology are discussed, which serve to illustrate a theoretical dimension of increasing levels of abstraction
Conceptual spatial representations for indoor mobile robots
We present an approach for creating conceptual representations of human-made indoor environments using mobile
robots. The concepts refer to spatial and functional properties of typical indoor environments. Following ļ¬ndings
in cognitive psychology, our model is composed of layers representing maps at diļ¬erent levels of abstraction. The
complete system is integrated in a mobile robot endowed with laser and vision sensors for place and object recognition.
The system also incorporates a linguistic framework that actively supports the map acquisition process, and which
is used for situated dialogue. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the integrated system
Visualization in cyber-geography: reconsidering cartography's concept of visualization in current usercentric cybergeographic cosmologies
This article discusses some epistemological problems of a semiotic and cybernetic
character in two current scientific cosmologies in the study of geographic
information systems (GIS) with special reference to the concept of visualization in
modern cartography.
Setting off from Michael Battyās prolegomena for a virtual geography and Michael
Goodchildās āHuman-Computer-Reality-Interactionā as the field of a new media
convergence and networking of GIS-computation of geo-data, the paper outlines
preliminarily a common field of study, namely that of cybernetic geography, or just
ācyber-geography) owing to the principal similarities with second order cybernetics.
Relating these geographical cosmologies to some of Scienceās dominant, historical
perceptions of the exploring and appropriating of Nature as an āinventory of
knowledgeā, the article seeks to identify some basic ontological and epistemological
dimensions of cybernetic geography and visualization in modern cartography.
The points made is that a generalized notion of visualization understood as the use of
maps, or more precisely as cybergeographic GIS-thinking seems necessary as an
epistemological as well as a methodological prerequisite to scientific knowledge in
cybergeography. Moreover do these generalized concept seem to lead to a
displacement of the positions traditionally held by the scientist and lay-man citizen,
that is not only in respect of the perception of the matter studied, i.e. the field of
geography, but also of the manner in which the scientist informs the lay-man citizen
in the course of action in the public participation in decision making; a displacement
that seems to lead to a more critical, or perhaps even quasi-scientific approach as
concerns the lay-man user
Abstraction as a basis for the computational interpretation of creative cross-modal metaphor
Various approaches to computational metaphor interpretation are based on pre-existing similarities between source and target domains and/or are based on metaphors already observed to be prevalent in the language. This paper addresses similarity-creating cross-modal metaphoric expressions. It is shown how the āabstract concept as objectā (or reification) metaphor plays a central role in a large class of metaphoric extensions. The described approach depends on the imposition of abstract ontological components, which represent source concepts, onto target concepts. The challenge of such a system is to represent both denotative and connotative components which are extensible, together with a framework of general domains between which such extensions can conceivably occur. An existing ontology of this kind, consistent with some mathematic concepts and widely held linguistic notions, is outlined. It is suggested that the use of such an abstract representation system is well adapted to the interpretation of both conventional and unconventional metaphor that is similarity-creating
