    Consciousness CLEARS the Mind

    A full understanding of consciouness requires that we identify the brain processes from which conscious experiences emerge. What are these processes, and what is their utility in supporting successful adaptive behaviors? Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) predicted a functional link between processes of Consciousness, Learning, Expectation, Attention, Resonance, and Synchrony (CLEARS), includes the prediction that "all conscious states are resonant states." This connection clarifies how brain dynamics enable a behaving individual to autonomously adapt in real time to a rapidly changing world. The present article reviews theoretical considerations that predicted these functional links, how they work, and some of the rapidly growing body of behavioral and brain data that have provided support for these predictions. The article also summarizes ART models that predict functional roles for identified cells in laminar thalamocortical circuits, including the six layered neocortical circuits and their interactions with specific primary and higher-order specific thalamic nuclei and nonspecific nuclei. These prediction include explanations of how slow perceptual learning can occur more frequently in superficial cortical layers.     Resonant Neural Dynamics of Speech Perception

    What is the neural representation of a speech code as it evolves in time? How do listeners integrate temporally distributed phonemic information across hundreds of milliseconds, even backwards in time, into coherent representations of syllables and words? What sorts of brain mechanisms encode the correct temporal order, despite such backwards effects, during speech perception? How does the brain extract rate-invariant properties of variable-rate speech? This article describes an emerging neural model that suggests answers to these questions, while quantitatively simulating challenging data about audition, speech and word recognition. This model includes bottom-up filtering, horizontal competitive, and top-down attentional interactions between a working memory for short-term storage of phonetic items and a list categorization network for grouping sequences of items. The conscious speech and word recognition code is suggested to be a resonant wave of activation across such a network, and a percept of silence is proposed to be a temporal discontinuity in the rate with which such a resonant wave evolves. Properties of these resonant waves can be traced to the brain mechanisms whereby auditory, speech, and language representations are learned in a stable way through time.     The Resonant Dynamics of Speech Perception: Interword Integration and Duration-Dependent Backward Effects

    How do listeners integrate temporally distributed phonemic information into coherent representations of syllables and words? During fluent speech perception, variations in the durations of speech sounds and silent pauses can produce different pereeived groupings. For exarnple, increasing the silence interval between the words "gray chip" may result in the percept "great chip", whereas increasing the duration of fricative noise in "chip" may alter the percept to "great ship" (Repp et al., 1978). The ARTWORD neural model quantitatively simulates such context-sensitive speech data. In AHTWORD, sequential activation and storage of phonemic items in working memory provides bottom-up input to unitized representations, or list chunks, that group together sequences of items of variable length. The list chunks compete with each other as they dynamically integrate this bottom-up information. The winning groupings feed back to provide top-down supportto their phonemic items. Feedback establishes a resonance which temporarily boosts the activation levels of selected items and chunks, thereby creating an emergent conscious percept. Because the resonance evolves more slowly than wotking memory activation, it can be influenced by information presented after relatively long intervening silence intervals. The same phonemic input can hereby yield different groupings depending on its arrival time. Processes of resonant transfer and competitive teaming help determine which groupings win the competition.     Variable Rate Working Memories for Phonetic Categorization and Invariant Speech Perception

    Speech can be understood at widely varying production rates. A working memory is described for short-term storage of temporal lists of input items. The working memory is a cooperative-competitive neural network that automatically adjusts its integration rate, or gain, to generate a short-term memory code for a list that is independent of item presentation rate. Such an invariant working memory model is used to simulate data of Repp (1980) concerning the changes of phonetic category boundaries as a function of their presentation rate.     Checking chess checks with chunks: A model of simple check detection

    The procedure by which humans identify checks in check positions is not well understood. We report here our experience in modelling this process with CHREST, a general-purpose cognitive model that has previously successfully captured a variety of attention- and perception-related phenomena. We have attempted to reproduce the results of an experiment investigating the ability of humans to determine checks in simple chess positions. We propose a specific model of how humans perform this experiment, and show that, given certain reasonable assumptions, CHREST can follow this model to create a good reproduction of the data

    Bring ART into the ACT

    ACT is compared with a particular type of connectionist model that cannot handle symbols and use non-biological operations that cannot learn in real time. This focus continues an unfortunate trend of straw man "debates" in cognitive science.
