Towards Hybrid Cloud-assisted Crowdsourced Live Streaming: Measurement and Analysis
Crowdsourced Live Streaming (CLS), most notably Twitch.tv, has seen explosive
growth in its popularity in the past few years. In such systems, any user can
lively broadcast video content of interest to others, e.g., from a game player
to many online viewers. To fulfill the demands from both massive and
heterogeneous broadcasters and viewers, expensive server clusters have been
deployed to provide video ingesting and transcoding services. Despite the
existence of highly popular channels, a significant portion of the channels is
indeed unpopular. Yet as our measurement shows, these broadcasters are
consuming considerable system resources; in particular, 25% (resp. 30%) of
bandwidth (resp. computation) resources are used by the broadcasters who do not
have any viewers at all. In this paper, we closely examine the challenge of
handling unpopular live-broadcasting channels in CLS systems and present a
comprehensive solution for service partitioning on hybrid cloud. The
trace-driven evaluation shows that our hybrid cloud-assisted design can smartly
assign ingesting and transcoding tasks to the elastic cloud virtual machines,
providing flexible system deployment cost-effectively
Underlay Drone Cell for Temporary Events: Impact of Drone Height and Aerial Channel Environments
Providing seamless connection to a large number of devices is one of the
biggest challenges for the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. Using a drone as
an aerial base station (ABS) to provide coverage to devices or users on ground
is envisaged as a promising solution for IoT networks. In this paper, we
consider a communication network with an underlay ABS to provide coverage for a
temporary event, such as a sporting event or a concert in a stadium. Using
stochastic geometry, we propose a general analytical framework to compute the
uplink and downlink coverage probabilities for both the aerial and the
terrestrial cellular system. Our framework is valid for any aerial channel
model for which the probabilistic functions of line-of-sight (LOS) and
non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links are specified. The accuracy of the analytical
results is verified by Monte Carlo simulations considering two commonly adopted
aerial channel models. Our results show the non-trivial impact of the different
aerial channel environments (i.e., suburban, urban, dense urban and high-rise
urban) on the uplink and downlink coverage probabilities and provide design

Massive MIMO for Crowd Scenarios: A Solution Based on Random Access
This paper presents a new approach to intra-cell pilot contamination in
crowded massive MIMO scenarios. The approach relies on two essential properties
of a massive MIMO system, namely near-orthogonality between user channels and
near-stability of channel powers. Signal processing techniques that take
advantage of these properties allow us to view a set of contaminated pilot
signals as a graph code on which iterative belief propagation can be performed.
This makes it possible to decontaminate pilot signals and increase the
throughput of the system. The proposed solution exhibits high performance with
large improvements over the conventional method. The improvements come at the
price of an increased error rate, although this effect is shown to decrease
significantly for increasing number of antennas at the base station
Beyond pairwise strategy updating in the prisoner's dilemma game
In spatial games players typically alter their strategy by imitating the most
successful or one randomly selected neighbor. Since a single neighbor is taken
as reference, the information stemming from other neighbors is neglected, which
begets the consideration of alternative, possibly more realistic approaches.
Here we show that strategy changes inspired not only by the performance of
individual neighbors but rather by entire neighborhoods introduce a
qualitatively different evolutionary dynamics that is able to support the
stable existence of very small cooperative clusters. This leads to phase
diagrams that differ significantly from those obtained by means of pairwise
strategy updating. In particular, the survivability of cooperators is possible
even by high temptations to defect and over a much wider uncertainty range. We
support the simulation results by means of pair approximations and analysis of
spatial patterns, which jointly highlight the importance of local information
