    Physics Infused LSTM Network for Track Association Based on Marine Vessel Automatic Identification System Data

    In marine surveillance, a crucial task is distinguishing between normal and abnormal vessel movements to timely identify potential threats. Subsequently, the vessels need to be monitored and tracked until necessary action can be taken. To achieve this, a track association problem is formulated where multiple vessels\u27 unlabeled geographic and motion parameters are associated with their true labels. These parameters are typically obtained from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) database, which enables real-time tracking of marine vessels equipped with AIS. The parameters are time-stamped and collected over a long period, and therefore, modeling the inherent temporal patterns in the data is crucial for successful track association. The problem is further complicated by infrequent data collection (time gap) and track overlaps. Traditionally, physics-based models and Kalman-filtering algorithms are used for tracking problems. However, the performance of Kalman filtering is limited in the presence of time-gap and overlapping tracks, while physics-based models are unable to model temporal patterns. To address these limitations, this work employs LSTM, a special neural network architecture, for marine vessel track association. LSTM is capable of modeling long-term temporal patterns and associating a data point with its true track. The performance of LSTM is investigated, and its strengths and limitations are identified. To further improve the performance of LSTM, an integration of the physics-based model and LSTM is proposed. The performance of the joint model is evaluated on multiple AIS datasets with varying characteristics. According to the findings, the physics-based model performs better when there is very little or no time gap in the dataset. However, when there are time gaps and multiple overlapping tracks, LSTM outperforms the physics-based model. Additionally, LSTM is more effective with larger datasets as it can learn the historical patterns of the features. Nevertheless, the joint model consistently outperforms the individual models by leveraging the strengths of both approaches. Given that the AIS dataset commonly provides a long stretch of historical information with frequent time gaps, the combined model should improve the accuracy of vessel tracking

    Detecting Abnormal Vehicular Dynamics at Intersections Based on an Unsupervised Learning Approach and a Stochastic Model

    This investigation demonstrates an unsupervised approach for modeling traffic flow and detecting abnormal vehicle behaviors at intersections. In the first stage, the approach reveals and records the different states of the system. These states are the result of coding and grouping the historical motion of vehicles as long binary strings. In the second stage, using sequences of the recorded states, a stochastic graph model based on a Markovian approach is built. A behavior is labeled abnormal when current motion pattern cannot be recognized as any state of the system or a particular sequence of states cannot be parsed with the stochastic model. The approach is tested with several sequences of images acquired from a vehicular intersection where the traffic flow and duration used in connection with the traffic lights are continuously changed throughout the day. Finally, the low complexity and the flexibility of the approach make it reliable for use in real time systems

    DATA DRIVEN INTELLIGENT AGENT NETWORKS FOR ADAPTIVE MONITORING AND CONTROL

    To analyze the characteristics and predict the dynamic behaviors of complex systems over time, comprehensive research to enable the development of systems that can intelligently adapt to the evolving conditions and infer new knowledge with algorithms that are not predesigned is crucially needed. This dissertation research studies the integration of the techniques and methodologies resulted from the fields of pattern recognition, intelligent agents, artificial immune systems, and distributed computing platforms, to create technologies that can more accurately describe and control the dynamics of real-world complex systems. The need for such technologies is emerging in manufacturing, transportation, hazard mitigation, weather and climate prediction, homeland security, and emergency response. Motivated by the ability of mobile agents to dynamically incorporate additional computational and control algorithms into executing applications, mobile agent technology is employed in this research for the adaptive sensing and monitoring in a wireless sensor network. Mobile agents are software components that can travel from one computing platform to another in a network and carry programs and data states that are needed for performing the assigned tasks. To support the generation, migration, communication, and management of mobile monitoring agents, an embeddable mobile agent system (Mobile-C) is integrated with sensor nodes. Mobile monitoring agents visit distributed sensor nodes, read real-time sensor data, and perform anomaly detection using the equipped pattern recognition algorithms. The optimal control of agents is achieved by mimicking the adaptive immune response and the application of multi-objective optimization algorithms. The mobile agent approach provides potential to reduce the communication load and energy consumption in monitoring networks. The major research work of this dissertation project includes: (1) studying effective feature extraction methods for time series measurement data; (2) investigating the impact of the feature extraction methods and dissimilarity measures on the performance of pattern recognition; (3) researching the effects of environmental factors on the performance of pattern recognition; (4) integrating an embeddable mobile agent system with wireless sensor nodes; (5) optimizing agent generation and distribution using artificial immune system concept and multi-objective algorithms; (6) applying mobile agent technology and pattern recognition algorithms for adaptive structural health monitoring and driving cycle pattern recognition; (7) developing a web-based monitoring network to enable the visualization and analysis of real-time sensor data remotely. Techniques and algorithms developed in this dissertation project will contribute to research advances in networked distributed systems operating under changing environments

    A framework for fault detection and diagnostics of articulated collaborative robots based on hybrid series modelling of Artificial Intelligence algorithms

    Smart factories build on cyber-physical systems as one of the most promising technological concepts. Within smart factories, condition-based and predictive maintenance are key solutions to improve competitiveness by reducing downtimes and increasing the overall equipment effectiveness. Besides, the growing interest towards operation flexibility has pushed companies to introduce novel solutions on the shop floor, leading to install cobots for advanced human-machine collaboration. Despite their reliability, also cobots are subjected to degradation and functional failures may influence their operation, leading to anomalous trajectories. In this context, the literature shows gaps in what concerns a systematic adoption of condition-based and predictive maintenance to monitor and predict the health state of cobots to finally assure their expected performance. This work proposes an approach that leverages on a framework for fault detection and diagnostics of cobots inspired by the Prognostics and Health Management process as a guideline. The goal is to habilitate first-level maintenance, which aims at informing the operator about anomalous trajectories. The framework is enabled by a modular structure consisting of hybrid series modelling of unsupervised Artificial Intelligence algorithms, and it is assessed by inducing three functional failures in a 7-axis collaborative robot used for pick and place operations. The framework demonstrates the capability to accommodate and handle different trajectories while notifying the unhealthy state of cobots. Thanks to its structure, the framework is open to testing and comparing more algorithms in future research to identify the best-in-class in each of the proposed steps given the operational context on the shop floor

    Septal Flash Assessment on CRT Candidates Based on Statistical Atlases of Motion

    International audienceIn this paper, we propose a complete framework for the automatic detection and quantification of abnormal heart motion patterns using Statistical Atlases of Motion built from healthy populations. The method is illustrated on CRT patients with identified cardiac dyssyn-chrony and abnormal septal motion on 2D ultrasound (US) sequences. The use of the 2D US modality guarantees that the temporal resolution of the image sequences is high enough to work under a small displacements hypothesis. Under this assumption, the computed displacement fields can be directly considered as cardiac velocities. Comparison of subjects acquired with different spatiotemporal resolutions implies the reorientation and temporal normalization of velocity fields in a common space of coordinates. Statistics are then performed on the reoriented vector fields. Results show the ability of the method to correctly detect abnormal motion patterns and quantify their distance to normality. The use of local p-values for quantifying abnormal motion patterns is believed to be a promising strategy for computing new markers of cardiac dyssynchrony for better characterizing CRT candidates
