Factors influencing branchless banking for microfinance in Sudan: Theoretical perspectives and future directions
In Sudan more than 40% live below the poverty line and getting basic financial service poses a challenge to financial institutions. Most of these unserved populations live in far-flung areas that make it difficult for microfinance institutions to reach them. But the enormous growth of mobile technology industry has created new opportunity to expand financial services to this unserved population. Branchless banking is one of the latest technologies that have been employed in different developing countries to expand financial services to the unbanked poor. Despite the potential benefits and relevance of Branchless banking to Sudan, there are still very few studies on Branchless banking in Sudan. To address this gap in the literature, this study aims to investigate the factors that are essential to the development of branchless banking in Sudan using mobile technology. This is a research-in-progress paper, the critical review of the literature so far revealed that there are essential factors for the success of branchless banking in Sudan e.g. the identification of the industry key players and their roles, the enabling regulatory environment, the infrastructure readiness and Sudanese cultural values. The paper will provide regulators and policy makers in Sudan a way forward to expedite the development of suitable Branchless banking for microfinance in Sudan
Fighting Poverty, Profitably: Transforming the Economics of Payments to Build Sustainable, Inclusive Financial Systems
The Gates Foundation's Financial Services for the Poor program (FSP) believes that effective financial services are paramount in the fight against poverty. Nonetheless, today more than 2 billion people live outside the formal financial sector. Increasing their access to high quality, affordable financial services will accelerate the well-being of households, communities, and economies in the developing world. One of the most promising ways to deliver these financial services to the poor -- profitably and at scale -- is by using digital payment platforms.These are the conclusions we have reached as the result of extensive research in pursuit of one of the Foundation's primary missions: to give the world's poorest people the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty.FSP conducted this research because we believe that there is a gap in the fact base and understanding of how payment systems can extend digital services to low income consumers in developing markets. This is a complex topic, with fragmented information and a high degree of country-by-country variability. A complete view across the entire payment system has been missing, limiting how system providers, policy makers, and regulators (groups we refer to collectively as financial inclusion stakeholders) evaluate decisions and take actions. With a holistic view of the payment system, we believe that interventions can have higher impact, and stakeholders can better understand and address the ripple effects that changes to one part of the system can have. In this report, we focus on the economics of payment systems to understand how they can be transformed to serve poor people in a way that is profitable and sustainable in aggregate
The Design of a System Architecture for Mobile Multimedia Computers
This chapter discusses the system architecture of a portable computer, called Mobile Digital Companion, which provides support for handling multimedia applications energy efficiently. Because battery life is limited and battery weight is an important factor for the size and the weight of the Mobile Digital Companion, energy management plays a crucial role in the architecture. As the Companion must remain usable in a variety of environments, it has to be flexible and adaptable to various operating conditions. The Mobile Digital Companion has an unconventional architecture that saves energy by using system decomposition at different levels of the architecture and exploits locality of reference with dedicated, optimised modules. The approach is based on dedicated functionality and the extensive use of energy reduction techniques at all levels of system design. The system has an architecture with a general-purpose processor accompanied by a set of heterogeneous autonomous programmable modules, each providing an energy efficient implementation of dedicated tasks. A reconfigurable internal communication network switch exploits locality of reference and eliminates wasteful data copies
Network-based business process management: embedding business logic in communications networks
Advanced Business Process Management (BPM) tools enable the decomposition of previously integrated and often ill-defined processes into re-usable process modules. These process modules can subsequently be distributed on the Internet over a variety of many different actors, each with their own specialization and economies-of-scale. The economic benefits of process specialization can be huge. However, how should such actors in a business network find, select, and control, the best partner for what part of the business process, in such a way that the best result is achieved? This particular management challenge requires more advanced techniques and tools in the enabling communications networks. An approach has been developed to embed business logic into the communications networks in order to optimize the allocation of business resources from a network point of view. Adoption of Mobile Financial Services among Rural Under-Banked
During the last decade, there has been tremendous growth in mobile penetration in many countries across the globe and most interestingly in a number of developing countries. On the other hand around, half of the worldâs population is deprived of banking and financial services. This paper is based on a study that was aimed to identify drivers and inhibitors for adoption of MFS among the rural under-banked population and to compare the same with that of the existing studies. During the study, an extensive review of literature was conducted to identify the factors that were studied and found significantly affecting the adoption of mobile financial services. This was followed by an exploratory qualitative research conducted among the rural under-banked population of three distinct states in India. The findings of the study indicate that the demand for banking and financial services and the amount of hardships faced in availing these services through the existing channels of delivery can act as strong drivers for MFS adoption among the rural under-banked. On the other hand, factors like lack of trust on technology and lack of technology readiness were found to act as barriers to the adoption of MFS.
Active networks: an evolution of the internet
Active Networks can be seen as an evolution of the classical model of packet-switched networks. The traditional and âpassiveâ network model is based on a static definition of the network node behaviour. Active Networks propose an âactiveâ model where the intermediate nodes (switches and routers) can load and execute user code contained in the data units (packets). Active Networks are a programmable network model, where bandwidth and computation are both considered shared network resources. This approach opens up new interesting research fields. Code, space and everyday life
In this paper we examine the role of code (software) in the spatial formation of
collective life. Taking the view that human life and coded technology are folded into
one another, we theorise space as ontogenesis. Space, we posit, is constantly being
bought into being through a process of transduction â the constant making anew of a
domain in reiterative and transformative practices - as an incomplete solution to a
relational problem. The relational problem we examine is the ongoing encounter
between individuals and environment where the solution, to a greater or lesser extent,
is code. Code, we posit, is diversely embedded in collectives as coded objects, coded
infrastructure, coded processes and coded assemblages. These objects, infrastructure,
processes and assemblages possess technicity, that is, unfolding or evolutive power to
make things happen; the ability to mediate, supplement, augment, monitor, regulate,
operate, facilitate, produce collective life. We contend that when the technicity of
code is operationalised it transduces one of three forms of hybrid spatial formations:
code/space, coded space and backgrounded coded space. These formations are
contingent, relational, extensible and scaleless, often stretched out across networks of
greater or shorter length. We demonstrate the coded transduction of space through
three vignettes â each a day in the life of three people living in London, UK, tracing
the technical mediation of their interactions, transactions and mobilities. We then
discuss how code becomes the relational solution to five different classes of problems
â domestic living, travelling, working, communicating, and consuming
A Java-based Mobile Agent Framework for Distributed Network Applications
Recently, a new paradigm has emerged forstructuring and developing distributed network applications inopen distributed and heterogeneous environments. Manyapplication areas, such as electronic commerce, mobilecomputing, network management and information retrieval canbenefit from the application of the Mobile Agent technology. Theexploitation of Mobile Agents offers several peculiar advantages,such as reduction of network latency, asynchronous execution,robust and fault tolerant behavior. Java technology provides aplatform-independent, portable software environment whichmakes it an excellent tool for mobile agent development. MobileAgents are mainly intended to be used for applicationsdistributed over large scale (slow) networks because they allowsaving communication costs by moving computation to the hoston which the target data resides. However, it has not becomepopular due to some problems such as security. In this paper, wepresent a distributed network architecture based on the MobileAgent approach. A network of communicating servers each ofwhich support multiple clients is our goal. We also propose asecurity approach for mobile agents, which protect critical dataof mobile agents from malicious attacks, by using cryptographictechniques. We implement a bank service application to be testedon our mobile agent framework. The results suggest that fornetworks with high latency, Mobile Agents may provideimprovements over more conventional client-server systems
