    Asynchronous Ultrasonic Trilateration for Indoor Positioning of Mobile Phones

    Spatial awareness is fast becoming the key feature on today‟s mobile devices. While accurate outdoor navigation has been widely available for some time through Global Positioning Systems (GPS), accurate indoor positioning is still largely an unsolved problem. One major reason for this is that GPS and other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) systems offer accuracy of a scale far different to that required for effective indoor navigation. Indoor positioning is also hindered by poor GPS signal quality, a major issue when developing dedicated indoor locationing systems. In addition, many indoor systems use specialized hardware to calculate accurate device position, as readily available wireless protocols have so far not delivered sufficient levels of accuracy. This research aims to investigate how the mobile phone‟s innate ability to produce sound (notably ultrasound) can be utilised to deliver more accurate indoor positioning than current methods. Experimental work covers limitations of mobile phone speakers in regard to generation of high frequencies, propagation patternsof ultrasound and their impact on maximum range, and asynchronous trilateration. This is followed by accuracy and reliability tests of an ultrasound positioning system prototype.This thesis proposes a new method of positioning a mobile phone indoors with accuracy substantially better than other contemporary positioning systems available on off-theshelf mobile devices. Given that smartphones can be programmed to correctly estimate direction, this research outlines a potentially significant advance towards a practical platform for indoor Location Based Services. Also a novel asynchronous trilateration algorithm is proposed that eliminates the need for synchronisation between the mobile device and the positioning infrastructure

    Multimodal, Embodied and Location-Aware Interaction

    This work demonstrates the development of mobile, location-aware, eyes-free applications which utilise multiple sensors to provide a continuous, rich and embodied interaction. We bring together ideas from the fields of gesture recognition, continuous multimodal interaction, probability theory and audio interfaces to design and develop location-aware applications and embodied interaction in both a small-scale, egocentric body-based case and a large-scale, exocentric `world-based' case. BodySpace is a gesture-based application, which utilises multiple sensors and pattern recognition enabling the human body to be used as the interface for an application. As an example, we describe the development of a gesture controlled music player, which functions by placing the device at different parts of the body. We describe a new approach to the segmentation and recognition of gestures for this kind of application and show how simulated physical model-based interaction techniques and the use of real world constraints can shape the gestural interaction. GpsTunes is a mobile, multimodal navigation system equipped with inertial control that enables users to actively explore and navigate through an area in an augmented physical space, incorporating and displaying uncertainty resulting from inaccurate sensing and unknown user intention. The system propagates uncertainty appropriately via Monte Carlo sampling and output is displayed both visually and in audio, with audio rendered via granular synthesis. We demonstrate the use of uncertain prediction in the real world and show that appropriate display of the full distribution of potential future user positions with respect to sites-of-interest can improve the quality of interaction over a simplistic interpretation of the sensed data. We show that this system enables eyes-free navigation around set trajectories or paths unfamiliar to the user for varying trajectory width and context. We demon- strate the possibility to create a simulated model of user behaviour, which may be used to gain an insight into the user behaviour observed in our field trials. The extension of this application to provide a general mechanism for highly interactive context aware applications via density exploration is also presented. AirMessages is an example application enabling users to take an embodied approach to scanning a local area to find messages left in their virtual environment

    Promoting Universal Accessibility of the East Kowloon Harbor Front

    The pedestrian scheme that emerged from the former industrial district of Kwun Tong, Hong Kong developed without the consideration of pedestrian universal accessibility. Our goal was to propose a universally accessible pedestrian model to reach the East Kowloon harbor front. Through surveys and exploration of pedestrian pathways, we found inconsistencies in the degree of accessibility, stemming from the lack of Hong Kong accessibility standards. Our recommendations include implementing a wheelchair ramp slope standard, uniformly wide sidewalks, and more prevalent signage

    Empowering Mobile Art Practice : A Recontextualization of Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing

    Creating art with mobile phones in public spaces is an emerging form of artistic expression. This dissertation investigates the design and use of mobile art applications for creating and sharing interactive art experiences in public spaces. It explores new ways of deploying mobile and ubiquitous computing for art making that fosters creativity and community. This is done by developing a series of novel prototype applications, with a focus on multimodal interfaces that are put into use in authentic environments for validation by real people. The approach is to couple an artistically motivated design and innovation process with mobile, web and public display technologies, in order to explore the prototypes that build the empirical framework of this research. Multimodal interfaces address many of the human senses, such as seeing, hearing, touching; they thus provide powerful user experiences. Combining spaces with different modalities provides new possibilities for real-time interaction and engaging experiences. But there is a problem in that little is known about how to design multimodal interfaces and systems to work in the context of the city as digital interface, especially how to enable participatory, real-time interaction in urban space to foster creativity and togetherness. The resulting mobile art applications signal a new era in digital creativity, as they show the strengths of future mobile interactive platforms. The key points are providing engaging experiences of mass participation both locally and physically distributed; enabling creativity; and promoting real-time interaction not only between ‘people and people’ or ‘people and machines’ but also between ‘people and things’, such as nature, buildings, objects and the physical environment generally. These forthcoming approaches will lead to designs and implementations of new mobile interaction platforms, which eventually will lead us to new leisure time activities, such as creating and sharing art experiences in public space, but also to new ways of living an art- and culture-inspired lifestyle - empowering mobile art practice

    Multimodal Content Delivery for Geo-services

    This thesis describes a body of work carried out over several research projects in the area of multimodal interaction for location-based services. Research in this area has progressed from using simulated mobile environments to demonstrate the visual modality, to the ubiquitous delivery of rich media using multimodal interfaces (geo- services). To effectively deliver these services, research focused on innovative solutions to real-world problems in a number of disciplines including geo-location, mobile spatial interaction, location-based services, rich media interfaces and auditory user interfaces. My original contributions to knowledge are made in the areas of multimodal interaction underpinned by advances in geo-location technology and supported by the proliferation of mobile device technology into modern life. Accurate positioning is a known problem for location-based services, contributions in the area of mobile positioning demonstrate a hybrid positioning technology for mobile devices that uses terrestrial beacons to trilaterate position. Information overload is an active concern for location-based applications that struggle to manage large amounts of data, contributions in the area of egocentric visibility that filter data based on field-of-view demonstrate novel forms of multimodal input. One of the more pertinent characteristics of these applications is the delivery or output modality employed (auditory, visual or tactile). Further contributions in the area of multimodal content delivery are made, where multiple modalities are used to deliver information using graphical user interfaces, tactile interfaces and more notably auditory user interfaces. It is demonstrated how a combination of these interfaces can be used to synergistically deliver context sensitive rich media to users - in a responsive way - based on usage scenarios that consider the affordance of the device, the geographical position and bearing of the device and also the location of the device
