Measurement of lightning location data which occur together with continental thunderstorms and hurricanes was examined, and a second phase linear interferometer was deployed. Electrical emission originating from tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico were monitored. The time span between hurricane ALLEN (10 August 1980) and hurricane ALICIA (18 August 1983) represents the longest period that the United States has gone without hurricane landfall. Both systems were active and data were acquired during the landfall period of hurricane ALICIA

Assessing the long-distance repellency of long-lasting insecticide netting to a suite of post-harvest insects

Insects are our main competitors for food on the planet (1). In fact, growers lose 10-30% of crops during storage, processing, and marketing after harvest each year to stored product insects (2,3). Challenges to current management include increasing insecticide resistance to phosphine (4), which is the most common insect fumigant. Another challenge has been an increasing demand for organic or low insecticide-input products by consumers (5). To meet these challenges we came up with an alternative management approach, a long lasting insecticide netting (LLIN). Insecticide-treated nets have been widely used as a tool for malaria vector control in tropical regions since the early 1990s (6). These nets are typically treated with a pyrethroid insecticide, such as permethrin or deltamethrin, which repel, incapacitate, and kill mosquitoes that land on the nets. Researchers have recently begun exploring the use of LLINs for management of agricultural pests in high value specialty crops (7). More recently, work with LLINs in post-harvest settings has demonstrated that this tool can induce mortality, as well as significantly decrease the movement and dispersal capacity of post-harvest insects (8). Some possible uses for LLIN include being used to line windows, vents, eaves, or other openings into food facilities. However, anecdotal evidence from IPM practitioners has suggested that pyrethroids, which the LLIN contains, may be repellent to specific groups of insects. In order for LLIN to be an effective tool at intercepting and preventing infestation by stored product insects, we must demonstrate that the netting is not repellent to a range of post-harvest insects

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Alicia Joswiak is a Caucasian female born October 2, 2000. She initially lived on the East Side of Saint Paul but moved to New Brighton at a young age. Her mother was a manager and her father worked second shift. She also has a younger sister. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Joswiak was not very close to her extended family, but she did have a strong relationship with her grandmother and older neighbor. She grew up with financial stability. Her family was able to travel frequently. Joswiak remembers spending a lot of time with her sister growing up and being involved in school. Joswiak was involved in music programs and developed a real love for playing several instruments and participating in bands. She remembers being outside a lot and playing in the park near her house. She was not encouraged to be involved in religion and neither were her parents, but she was involved in the church choir. Joswiak reflects on the importance of education and intelligence, and how these were core values of the neighborhood. She was able to complete college level courses during high school, earning her associate degree and high school diploma at the same time. Lastly, Joswiak says she was never really affected by global issues. Some of the local issues that she remembers, however, include health issues at school, such as strep throat or head lice.https://digitalcommons.csp.edu/tc-ohp_interviews_mpls/1005/thumbnail.jp

Fashionable connections: Alicia LeFanu and writing from the edge

This article focuses upon Alicia LeFanu (fl. 1809–36), author of several poems, six multi-volume novels, a critical biography of her grandmother, Frances Sheridan, and articles for the Court Magazine. Descended from an eminent literary family, and since misremembered as a mere ‘petticoat novelist’, LeFanu complicates ideas of the centre and the periphery in her writing. I explore how this interest is figured in LeFanu's use of the chapter epigraph, developing work I have undertaken as editor of LeFanu's early novel, Strathallan (1816). LeFanu's epigraphs persist across her fiction as a dimension in which she not only reflects upon literary legacies, but also contests the boundaries of her own print culture. Through its consideration of LeFanu, as author and reader, the article further reflects upon the significance of her example for a broader understanding of other women writers at the edges and borders of Romanticism, and of their literary networks

Crisis, Dollar and Shadow Financial System

One of the biggest concerns in the course of the current financial crisis is the role of the dollar and its hegemony in exchange transactions on a global level. The financial operations of the parallel or shadow financial system cannot be comprehended without understanding financialization and securitization. “Too big to fail, too big to rescue” expressed the size of the “over-the-counter” derivatives market. Institutional investors are responsible for the sovereign debt problem and the solution to the crisis. The dollar as the international general equivalent of the shadow financial system is of tremendous importance in today’s world
