Climate Services for Resilient Development (CSRD) Partnership’s work in Latin America
The Climate Services for Resilient Development (CSRD)
Partnership is a private-public collaboration led by USAID,
which aims to increase resilience to climate change in
developing countries through the development and
dissemination of climate services. The partnership
began with initial projects in three countries: Colombia,
Ethiopia, and Bangladesh. The International Center for
Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) was the lead organization for
the Colombian CSRD efforts – which then expanded to
encompass work in the whole Latin American region
Report on CIAT's involvement in the Colombian Roundtable for Sustainable Cattle Production
CIAT continued its strong involvement in the Colombian Roundtable for Sustainable Cattle Production (Mesa de GanaderÃa Sostenible, MGS) during 2020. Apart from joining the regular monthly meetings, CIAT also helped in the strengthening and further establishment of regional roundtables in the principal cattle regions of Colombia (now there exist 12 of them), supported the MGS leadership in inviting new members to the MGS (now more than 50 members, stronger involvement from the private sector), and participated in/facilitated several workshops around sustainable cattle production and value chains. CIAT also helped in facilitating the search for financial resources for operating the MGS in 2019 and beyond, which resulted in the obtainment of funds for a technical secretary during 2019 through Solidaridad Network and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). One highlight from 2019 was the finalization of technical guidelines for the formulation of a national level policy for sustainable cattle production in Colombia and a first draft of the policy itself, which was submitted to the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture for evaluation. We are confident that the policy will be released during 2020
Changing Agriculture in a Changing Climate
Changes in weather patterns are going to affect agriculture with impacts differing according to region. The developing countries can reckon with the first effects. The authors look at the role that organic agriculture can play in adaptation. They assess the potential that organic agriculture could have but also look at the contribution that agriculture itself is making to climate change and examine how organic agriculture fares in this respect
Rural Poverty and Agricultural Development in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu is basically an agricultural economy. Agriculture is the backbone of the development of the Tamil Nadu economy. The role of agriculture in shaping the economy could be reflected from the large proportion of population that depends on agriculture for their livelihood and the significant contribution of agriculture to the state income. Due to its predominance, any positive and negative aspects of developments in the state could be linked with the performance of the agricultural sector. Hence, the concept of sustainable agriculture is more of a necessary issue of concern for solving the social and economic problems of the state. With this background, the present paper attempts to examine the linkages between rural poverty and agriculture in Tamil Nadu. The paper examined present status and trends in rural poverty in Tamil Nadu. It also examined the agriculture development and certain characteristics of agriculture in the state. By establishing the linkages between agriculture and poverty, the study argued that agricultural development would ensure food security, health and nutritional security, income and employment security, and economic and social security and thereby facilitate removal of poverty in Tamil Nadu
