Summary:Up to now it hasn’t been known exactly how many librarians became victims of the Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945 in the area of German control. As a result of a two-year research, 250 (mostly academic) librarians were identified as victims of the regime in Germany, Austria and in the occupied countries. There were 89 members of the Association of German Librarians (VDB) among them. The second part of this documentation starts with 131 exiles of librarians who had to leave their country. It continues with a commemoration of 63 librarians resisting NS-dictatorship in their professional or private lives. The paper closes with a documentation of 52 cases of deportation to a Nazi concentration camp or a ghetto. Surviving persons and remigrants are also listed. Very few facts were known about these topics until today
By content analysis of interviews and written projects gathered in the community, this study seeks to understand the kinds of cultural knowledge that support a computer science culture and their differences with other kinds of cultural knowledge. It also attempts to analyze the meanings of this culture in an American high technology university. This study is based on two year fieldwork at Carnegie Mellon University in 1990-1991 as part of a research project between technologists at CMU and anthropologists from University of Barcelona.
Carnegie Mellon has built a kind of high technology university, or computer university, based on a core research knowledge in computer science and technology. As a result of that context the term "science" has a different meaning in this community from that in the natural and social sciences. "Computer Science" at the SCS-CMU primarily means the creation of knowledge about what kind of computer system the researcher can design and how he can build it.
This new research model is redefining what knowledge means in an advanced information society. In 1988 the Computer Science and Technology Board, a section of the National Research Council, in a rapport called " The National Challenge in Computer Science and Technology" said: " Since
computer science is an artificial science (Simon 1981) theoretical computer science plays a very different role within computer science than, say, theoretical physics plays within physics.
Theoretical physics seeks to understand the physical universe, which exists independently.Theoretical computer scientists seek to understand all possible architectures or algorithms, which computer scientists create themselves."
This change in the cultural meaning of a key cultural knowledge of Western civilization, scientific knowledge, could have enormous consequences in the next future. We are changing from a natural scientific vision of the world, the world as a “natural order", to a technological one in which the world is conceived as a man-made machine, as an artifact

Mitos, crenças, epidemiologia e toxicidade do veneno da serpente do gênero Crotalus, do cerrado tocantinense
The genus Crotalus belongs to the family Viperidae and is popularly known as rattlesnake. Its
venom is recognized as a biological source of molecules capable of producing irreversible
damage to human health. The present work was developed with the purpose of studying the
myths and beliefs, the epidemiological and toxicological profile of venom of snakes of the
genus Crotalus, to the state of Tocantins. For this, a bibliographic survey was conducted to
evaluate the myths and beliefs surrounding these animals. Crotalus durissus snake complaints
were obtained from the TabWin-SINAN platform, from the records available for the last five
years - 2012 to 2016, with information on sex, age, serum therapy, case evolution and
municipality of occurrence. Rainfall and temperature were also analyzed to evaluate variables
that facilitated the encounter with these animals. The venom obtained from rattlesnakes
Crotalus durissus collilineatus was obtained from specimens collected in Tocantins, to
analyze its toxic profile. Protein assays, phospholipase activity, minimal coagulant dose,
toxicity (LD50) and anti-odor potential of the extract of the Chiococca alba plant were
performed. All the tests were conducted in parallel with the reference venom, provided by the
Butantan Institute - SP, of the same snake species under study. In view of the results it was
possible to evaluate that the beliefs and myths about snakes need to be demystified, so that
fear can be minimized and replaced by respect for these animals. As for the increase in
crotalic accidents in the state, the high degree of lethality for the northern region of the
country should be considered, with seasonality being an important factor that influences these
indices, the highest incidence occurring on colder days and with higher rainfall. For the
venom of Crotalus durissus collilineatus, the experiments demonstrated the absence of
crotamine in the animals collected in Tocantins and the indication of antiofidic activity for the
stratum of the Chiococca alba plant.O gênero Crotalus pertence a família Viperidae e é popularmente conhecido como cascavél.
Chiococca alba.
The Insulin Receptor: A New Target for Cancer Therapy
A large body of evidences have shown that both the IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR) and the insulin receptor (IR) play a role in cancer development and progression. In particular, IR overactivation by IGF-II is common in cancer cells, especially in dedifferentiated/stem-like cells. In spite of these findings, until very recently, only IGF-IR but not IR has been considered a target in cancer therapy. Although several preclinical studies have showed a good anti-cancer activity of selective anti-IGF-IR drugs, the results of the clinical first trials have been disappointing. In fact, only a small subset of malignant tumors has shown an objective response to these therapies. Development of resistance to anti-IGF-IR drugs may include upregulation of IR isoform A (IR-A) in cancer cells and its overactivation by increased secretion of autocrine IGF-II. These findings have led to the concept that co-targeting IR together with IGF-IR may increase therapy efficacy and prevent adaptive resistance to selective anti-IGF-IR drugs. IR blockade should be especially considered in tumors with high IR-A:IGF-IR ratio and high levels of autocrine IGF-II. Conversely, insulin sensitizers, which ameliorate insulin resistance associated with metabolic disorders and cancer treatments, may have important implications for cancer prevention and management. Only few drugs co-targeting the IR and IGF-IR are currently available. Ideally, future IR targeting strategies should be able to selectively inhibit the tumor promoting effects of IR without impairing its metabolic effects
Development of a numerical modeling approach for large-scale fluid mud flow in estuarine environments
