    Optimal greenhouse cultivation control: survey and perspectives

    Abstract: A survey is presented of the literature on greenhouse climate control, positioning the various solutions and paradigms in the framework of optimal control. A separation of timescales allows the separation of the economic optimal control problem of greenhouse cultivation into an off-line problem at the tactical level, and an on-line problem at the operational level. This paradigm is used to classify the literature into three categories: focus on operational control, focus on the tactical level, and truly integrated control. Integrated optimal control warrants the best economical result, and provides a systematic way to design control systems for the innovative greenhouses of the future. Research issues and perspectives are listed as well

    Model predictive control techniques for hybrid systems

    This paper describes the main issues encountered when applying model predictive control to hybrid processes. Hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) is a research field non-fully developed with many open challenges. The paper describes some of the techniques proposed by the research community to overcome the main problems encountered. Issues related to the stability and the solution of the optimization problem are also discussed.     REAL-TIME MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL OF QUASI-KEYHOLE PIPE WELDING

    Quasi-keyhole, including plasma keyhole and double-sided welding, is a novel approach proposed to operate the keyhole arc welding process. It can result in a high quality weld, but also raise higher demand of the operator. A computer control system to detect the keyhole and control the arc current can improve the performance of the welding process. To this effect, developing automatic pipe welding, instead of manual welding, is a hot research topic in the welding field. The objective of this research is to design an automatic quasi-keyhole pipe welding system that can monitor the keyhole and control its establishment time to track the reference trajectory as the dynamic behavior of welding processes changes. For this reason, an automatic plasma welding system is proposed, in which an additional electrode is added on the back side of the workpiece to detect the keyhole, as well as to provide the double-side arc in the double-sided arc welding mode. In the automatic pipe welding system the arc current can be controlled by the computer controller. Based on the designed automatic plasma pipe welding system, two kinds of model predictive controller − linear and bilinear − are developed, and an optimal algorithm is designed to optimize the keyhole weld process. The result of the proposed approach has been verified by using both linear and bilinear model structures in the quasi-keyhole plasma welding (QKPW) process experiments, both in normal plasma keyhole and double-sided arc welding modes

    Model Predictive Control (MPC) for Enhancing Building and HVAC System Energy Efficiency: Problem Formulation, Applications and Opportunities

    In the last few years, the application of Model Predictive Control (MPC) for energy management in buildings has received significant attention from the research community. MPC is becoming more and more viable because of the increase in computational power of building automation systems and the availability of a significant amount of monitored building data. MPC has found successful implementation in building thermal regulation, fully exploiting the potential of building thermal mass. Moreover, MPC has been positively applied to active energy storage systems, as well as to the optimal management of on-site renewable energy sources. MPC also opens up several opportunities for enhancing energy efficiency in the operation of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems because of its ability to consider constraints, prediction of disturbances and multiple conflicting objectives, such as indoor thermal comfort and building energy demand. Despite the application of MPC algorithms in building control has been thoroughly investigated in various works, a unified framework that fully describes and formulates the implementation is still lacking. Firstly, this work introduces a common dictionary and taxonomy that gives a common ground to all the engineering disciplines involved in building design and control. Secondly the main scope of this paper is to define the MPC formulation framework and critically discuss the outcomes of different existing MPC algorithms for building and HVAC system management.     A MPC Strategy for the Optimal Management of Microgrids Based on Evolutionary Optimization

    In this paper, a novel model predictive control strategy, with a 24-h prediction horizon, is proposed to reduce the operational cost of microgrids. To overcome the complexity of the optimization problems arising from the operation of the microgrid at each step, an adaptive evolutionary strategy with a satisfactory trade-off between exploration and exploitation capabilities was added to the model predictive control. The proposed strategy was evaluated using a representative microgrid that includes a wind turbine, a photovoltaic plant, a microturbine, a diesel engine, and an energy storage system. The achieved results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, outperforming a global scheduling planner-based on a genetic algorithm by 14.2% in terms of operational cost.     UAV Optimal Cooperative Obstacle Avoidance and Target Tracking in Dynamic Stochastic Environments

    Cette thèse propose une stratégie de contrôle avancée pour guider une flotte d'aéronefs sans pilote (UAV) dans un environnement à la fois stochastique et dynamique. Pour ce faire, un simulateur de vol 3D a été développé avec MATLAB® pour tester les algorithmes de la stratégie de guidage en fonctions de différents scénarios. L'objectif des missions simulées est de s'assurer que chaque UAV intercepte une cible ellipsoïdale mobile tout en évitant une panoplie d'obstacles ellipsoïdaux mobiles détectés en route. Les UAVs situés à l'intérieur des limites de communication peuvent coopérer afin d'améliorer leurs performances au cours de la mission. Le simulateur a été conçu de façon à ce que les UAV soient dotés de capteurs et d'appareils de communication de portée limitée. De plus, chaque UAV possède un pilote automatique qui stabilise l'aéronef en vol et un planificateur de trajectoires qui génère les commandes à envoyer au pilote automatique. Au coeur du planificateur de trajectoires se trouve un contrôleur prédictif à horizon fuyant qui détermine les commandes à envoyer à l'UAV. Ces commandes optimisent un critère de performance assujetti à des contraintes. Le critère de performance est conçu de sorte que les UAV atteignent les objectifs de la mission, alors que les contraintes assurent que les commandes générées adhèrent aux limites de manoeuvrabilité de l'aéronef. La planification de trajectoires pour UAV opérant dans un environnement dynamique et stochastique dépend fortement des déplacements anticipés des objets (obstacle, cible). Un filtre de Kalman étendu est donc utilisé pour prédire les trajectoires les plus probables des objets à partir de leurs états estimés. Des stratégies de poursuite et d'évitement ont aussi été développées en fonction des trajectoires prédites des objets détectés. Pour des raisons de sécurité, la conception de stratégies d'évitement de collision à la fois efficaces et robustes est primordiale au guidage d'UAV. Une nouvelle stratégie d'évitement d'obstacles par approche probabiliste a donc été développée. La méthode cherche à minimiser la probabilité de collision entre l'UAV et tous ses obstacles détectés sur l'horizon de prédiction, tout en s'assurant que, à chaque pas de prédiction, la probabilité de collision entre l'UAV et chacun de ses obstacles détectés ne surpasse pas un seuil prescrit. Des simulations sont présentées au cours de cette thèse pour démontrer l'efficacité des algorithmes proposés

    A Compressive Receding Horizon Approach for Smart Home Energy Management

    UID/CEC/00326/2020Current increases in the demand for electricity require sustainable energy management measures and have promoted the adoption of clean and renewable sources, particularly at the residential building level. Active demand management is usually carried out through load shifting based on specific techniques, such as optimisation, heuristics, model-based predictive control and machine learning methodologies. This work addresses the problem of residential load scheduling via optimisation techniques. A compressive receding horizon strategy is proposed for week-ahead load shifting, and the selection is driven by traditional receding horizon and day-ahead allocation strategy misalignment, with weekly household appliance usage patterns. The proposed approach is compared with receding horizon and day-ahead scheduling techniques over 30 different weeks for a prototypical smart home with non-controllable demand, which is representative of a four-resident family and includes micro power generation and battery storage. The simulation results confirm the validity of the proposed strategy in the context of household appliance scheduling problems and show competitive electricity costs and resident discomfort performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Furthermore, the proposed compressive receding horizon strategy fully exploits weather and photovoltaic generation forecasts to promote self-consumption and grid demand stress reduction while providing environmental gains and financial benefits to the utility service and consumers, particularly in the case of simultaneously scheduling a huge number of households.publishersversionpublishe
