The contribution of data mining to information science
The information explosion is a serious challenge for current information institutions. On the other hand, data mining, which is the search for valuable information in large volumes of data, is one of the solutions to face this challenge. In the past several years, data mining has made a significant contribution to the field of information science. This paper examines the impact of data mining by reviewing existing applications, including personalized environments, electronic commerce, and search engines. For these three types of application, how data mining can enhance their functions is discussed. The reader of this paper is expected to get an overview of the state of the art research associated with these applications. Furthermore, we identify the limitations of current work and raise several directions for future research
Enhanced information retrieval using domain-specific recommender models
The objective of an information retrieval (IR) system is to retrieve relevant items which meet a user information need. There is currently significant interest in personalized IR which seeks to improve IR effectiveness by incorporating a model of the userās interests. However, in some situations
there may be no opportunity to learn about the interests of a specific user on a certain topic. In our work, we propose an IR approach which combines a recommender algorithm with IR methods to improve retrieval for domains where the system has no opportunity to learn prior information about the userās knowledge of a domain for which they have not previously entered a query. We use search data from other previous users interested in the same topic to build a
recommender model for this topic. When a user enters a query on a topic, new to this user, an appropriate recommender model is selected and used to predict a ranking which the user may find interesting based on the behaviour of previous
users with similar queries. The recommender output is integrated with a standard IR method in a weighted linear combination to provide a final result for the user. Experiments using the INEX 2009 data collection with a simulated recommender training set show that our approach can improve on a baseline IR system
Personalization by Partial Evaluation.
The central contribution of this paper is to model personalization by the programmatic notion of partial evaluation.Partial evaluation is a technique used to automatically specialize programs, given incomplete information about their input.The methodology presented here models a collection of information resources as a program (which abstracts the underlying schema of organization and ļ¬ow of information),partially evaluates the program with respect to user input,and recreates a personalized site from the specialized program.This enables a customizable methodology called PIPE that supports the automatic specialization of resources,without enumerating the interaction sequences beforehand .Issues relating to the scalability of PIPE,information integration,sessioniz-ling scenarios,and case studies are presented
Discovering the Impact of Knowledge in Recommender Systems: A Comparative Study
Recommender systems engage user profiles and appropriate filtering techniques
to assist users in finding more relevant information over the large volume of
information. User profiles play an important role in the success of
recommendation process since they model and represent the actual user needs.
However, a comprehensive literature review of recommender systems has
demonstrated no concrete study on the role and impact of knowledge in user
profiling and filtering approache. In this paper, we review the most prominent
recommender systems in the literature and examine the impression of knowledge
extracted from different sources. We then come up with this finding that
semantic information from the user context has substantial impact on the
performance of knowledge based recommender systems. Finally, some new clues for

Effect of Values and Technology Use on Exercise: Implications for Personalized Behavior Change Interventions
Technology has recently been recruited in the war against the ongoing obesity
crisis; however, the adoption of Health & Fitness applications for regular
exercise is a struggle. In this study, we present a unique demographically
representative dataset of 15k US residents that combines technology use logs
with surveys on moral views, human values, and emotional contagion. Combining
these data, we provide a holistic view of individuals to model their physical
exercise behavior. First, we show which values determine the adoption of Health
& Fitness mobile applications, finding that users who prioritize the value of
purity and de-emphasize values of conformity, hedonism, and security are more
likely to use such apps. Further, we achieve a weighted AUROC of .673 in
predicting whether individual exercises, and we also show that the application
usage data allows for substantially better classification performance (.608)
compared to using basic demographics (.513) or internet browsing data (.546).
We also find a strong link of exercise to respondent socioeconomic status, as
well as the value of happiness. Using these insights, we propose actionable
design guidelines for persuasive technologies targeting health behavior
modification
