Control Strategies for Open-End Winding Drives Operating in the Flux-Weakening Region
This paper presents and compares control strategies for three-phase open-end winding drives operating in the flux-weakening region. A six-leg inverter with a single dc-link is associated with the machine in order to use a single energy source. With this topology, the zero-sequence circuit has to be considered since the zero-sequence current can circulate in the windings. Therefore, conventional over-modulation strategies are not appropriate when the machine enters in the flux-weakening region. A few solutions dealing with the zero-sequence circuit have been proposed in literature. They use a modified space vector modulation or a conventional modulation with additional voltage limitations. The paper describes the aforementioned strategies and then a new strategy is proposed. This new strategy takes into account the magnitudes and phase angles of the voltage harmonic components. This yields better voltage utilization in the dq frame. Furthermore, inverter saturation is avoided in the zero-sequence frame and therefore zero-sequence current control is maintained. Three methods are implemented on a test bed composed of a three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous machine, a six-leg inverter and a hybrid DSP/FPGA controller. Experimental results are presented and compared for all strategies. A performance analysis is conducted as regards the region of operation and the machine parameters.Projet SOFRACI/FU
Multiphase induction motor drives - a technology status review
The area of multiphase variable-speed motor drives in general and multiphase induction motor drives in particular has experienced a substantial growth since the beginning of this century. Research has been conducted worldwide and numerous interesting developments have been reported in the literature. An attempt is made to provide a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area. The elaborated aspects include advantages of multiphase induction machines, modelling of multiphase induction machines, basic vector control and direct torque control schemes and PWM control of multiphase voltage source inverters. The authors also provide a detailed survey of the control strategies for five-phase and asymmetrical six-phase induction motor drives, as well as an overview of the approaches to the design of fault tolerant strategies for post-fault drive operation, and a discussion of multiphase multi-motor drives with single inverter supply. Experimental results, collected from various multiphase induction motor drive laboratory rigs, are also included to facilitate the understanding of the drive operatio
Fuzzy Controller for Matrix Converter System to Improve its Quality of Output
In this paper, Fuzzy Logic controller is developed for ac/ac Matrix
Converter. Furthermore, Total Harmonic Distortion is reduced significantly.
Space Vector Algorithm is a method to improve power quality of the converter
output. But its quality is limited to 86.7%.We are introduced a Cross coupled
DQ axis controller to improve power quality. The Matrix Converter is an
attractive topology for High voltage transformation ratio. A Matlab / Simulink
simulation analysis of the Matrix Converter system is provided. The design and
implementation of fuzzy controlled Matrix Converter is described. This AC-AC
system is proposed as an effective replacement for the conventional AC-DC-AC
system which employs a two-step power conversion.Comment: 11 page
Comparison of single-phase matrix converter and H-bridge converter for radio frequency induction heating
This paper compares the newly developed single-phase matrix converter and the more conventional H- bridge converter for radio frequency induction heating. Both the converters exhibit unity power factor, very low total harmonic distortion at the utility supply interface, good controllability under soft switching condition for a wide range of power, and high efficiencies, whilst still having simple structures. A novel switching control pattern has been proposed for the matrix converter in order to maintain the comparable performance to the H-bridge converter. Simulation and experimental results for both converters are presented. Comparisons between two converters have confirmed the excellent performance of the proposed matrix converter
Optimal Modeled Six-Phase Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation Method for Stator Voltage Harmonic Suppression
Dual Y shift 30 six-phase motors are expected to be extensively applied in high-power yet energy-effective fields, and a harmonic-suppressing control strategy plays a vital role in extending their prominent features of low losses and ultra-quiet operation. Aiming at the suppression of harmonic voltages, this paper proposes a six-phase space vector pulse width modulation method based on an optimization model, namely OM-SVPWM. First, four adjacent large vectors are employed in each of 12 sectors on a fundamental sub-plane. Second, the optimization model is constructed to intelligently determine activation durations of the four vectors, where its objective function aims to minimize the synthesis result on a harmonic sub-plane, and its constraint condition is that the synthesis result on the fundamental sub-plane satisfies a reference vector. Finally, to meet the real-time requirement, optimum solutions are obtained by using general central path following algorithm (GCPFA). Simulation and experiment results prove that, the OM-SVPWM performs around 37% better than a state-of-the-art competitive SVPWM in terms of harmonics suppression, which promise the proposed OM-SVPWM conforms to the energy-effective direction in actual engineering applications.Peer reviewe
Feed-forward Space Vector Modulation for Single-Phase Multilevel Cascade Converters with any DC voltage ratio
Modulation techniques for multilevel converters
can create distorted output voltages and currents if the DC link
voltages are unbalanced. This situation can be avoided if the
instantaneous DC voltage error is not taken into account in the
modulation process. This paper proposes a feed-forward space
vector modulation method for a single-phase multilevel cascade
converter. Using this modulation technique, the modulated output
voltage of the power converter always generates the reference
determined by the controller even in worst case voltage unbalance
conditions. In addition the possibility of optimizing the DC
voltage ratio between the H-bridges of the power converter is
introduced. Experimental results from a 5kVA prototype are
presented in order to validate the proposed modulation technique

High frequency inverter-transformer-cycloconverter system for DC to AC (3-phase) power conversion
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This thesis is concerned with a 3-phase multistage high frequency link DC to AC power conversion with a novel inverter-cycloconverter circuitry. The conversion system is composed of a high frequency PWM inverter, step-up high frequency transformer and cycloconverter with bidirectional switching devices. In first stage the DC voltage of the power source , say a submarine battery, is inverted to a system of 3-phase sinusoidally modulated I kHz alternative wave forms.
For this purpose a suggested optimized PWM technique for 3-phase inverter operation is adopted, in which harmonic components up to 17 th ( 17 kHz) are eliminated from the inverter output voltages. In the second stage, for DC input isolation from AC output and also for a voltage transformation ( here stepping-up )a high frequency ( size reduced ) transformer is employed. Generalized high frequency operation, influence and side effects of the transformer on overall system design & performance is investigated. In the final stage the 1 kHz -to- 50 Hz conversion process is accomplished by a 3-phase cycloconverter. The proposed "nonlinear modulation strategy" for cycloconverter output voltage and associated harmonic analysis is demonstrated, in which the harmonic components up to 38th (1.9 kHz ) are eliminated from the conversion system output voltage. To assess the suggested functioning principles for the inverter & cycloconverter , the prototype conversion system was developed.
Some design criteria and switching device selection are presented, together with different voltage & current wave forms of the prototype system under resistive & inductive load (induction motor) and their respective spectra
