    Evaluating indoor positioning systems in a shopping mall : the lessons learned from the IPIN 2018 competition

    The Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) conference holds an annual competition in which indoor localization systems from different research groups worldwide are evaluated empirically. The objective of this competition is to establish a systematic evaluation methodology with rigorous metrics both for real-time (on-site) and post-processing (off-site) situations, in a realistic environment unfamiliar to the prototype developers. For the IPIN 2018 conference, this competition was held on September 22nd, 2018, in Atlantis, a large shopping mall in Nantes (France). Four competition tracks (two on-site and two off-site) were designed. They consisted of several 1 km routes traversing several floors of the mall. Along these paths, 180 points were topographically surveyed with a 10 cm accuracy, to serve as ground truth landmarks, combining theodolite measurements, differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and 3D scanner systems. 34 teams effectively competed. The accuracy score corresponds to the third quartile (75th percentile) of an error metric that combines the horizontal positioning error and the floor detection. The best results for the on-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 11.70 m (Track 1) and 5.50 m (Track 2), while the best results for the off-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 0.90 m (Track 3) and 1.30 m (Track 4). These results showed that it is possible to obtain high accuracy indoor positioning solutions in large, realistic environments using wearable light-weight sensors without deploying any beacon.     Investigation of Shadow Matching for GNSS Positioning in Urban Canyons

    All travel behavior of people in urban areas relies on knowing their position. Obtaining position has become increasingly easier thanks to the vast popularity of ‘smart’ mobile devices. The main and most accurate positioning technique used in these devices is global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). However, the poor performance of GNSS user equipment in urban canyons is a well-known problem and it is particularly inaccurate in the cross-street direction. The accuracy in this direction greatly affects many applications, including vehicle lane identification and high-accuracy pedestrian navigation. Shadow matching is a new technique that helps solve this problem by integrating GNSS constellation geometries and information derived from 3D models of buildings. This study brings the shadow matching principle from a simple mathematical model, through experimental proof of concept, system design and demonstration, algorithm redesign, comprehensive experimental tests, real-time demonstration and feasibility assessment, to a workable positioning solution. In this thesis, GNSS performance in urban canyons is numerically evaluated using 3D models. Then, a generic two-phase 6-step shadow matching system is proposed, implemented and tested against both geodetic and smartphone-grade GNSS receivers. A Bayesian technique-based shadow matching is proposed to account for NLOS and diffracted signal reception. A particle filter is designed to enable multi-epoch kinematic positioning. Finally, shadow matching is adapted and implemented as a mobile application (app), with feasibility assessment conducted. Results from the investigation confirm that conventional ranging-based GNSS is not adequate for reliable urban positioning. The designed shadow matching positioning system is demonstrated complementary to conventional GNSS in improving urban positioning accuracy. Each of the three generations of shadow matching algorithm is demonstrated to provide better positioning performance, supported by comprehensive experiments. In summary, shadow matching has been demonstrated to significantly improve urban positioning accuracy; it shows great potential to revolutionize urban positioning from street level to lane level, and possibly meter level

    Improving Accuracy in Ultra-Wideband Indoor Position Tracking through Noise Modeling and Augmentation

    The goal of this research is to improve the precision in tracking of an ultra-wideband (UWB) based Local Positioning System (LPS). This work is motivated by the approach taken to improve the accuracies in the Global Positioning System (GPS), through noise modeling and augmentation. Since UWB indoor position tracking is accomplished using methods similar to that of the GPS, the same two general approaches can be used to improve accuracy. Trilateration calculations are affected by errors in distance measurements from the set of fixed points to the object of interest. When these errors are systemic, each distinct set of fixed points can be said to exhibit a unique set noise. For UWB indoor position tracking, the set of fixed points is a set of sensors measuring the distance to a tracked tag. In this work we develop a noise model for this sensor set noise, along with a particle filter that uses our set noise model. To the author\u27s knowledge, this noise has not been identified and modeled for an LPS. We test our methods on a commercially available UWB system in a real world setting. From the results we observe approximately 15% improvement in accuracy over raw UWB measurements. The UWB system is an example of an aided sensor since it requires a person to carry a device which continuously broadcasts its identity to determine its location. Therefore the location of each user is uniquely known even when there are multiple users present. However, it suffers from limited precision as compared to some unaided sensors such as a camera which typically are placed line of sight (LOS). An unaided system does not require active participation from people. Therefore it has more difficulty in uniquely identifying the location of each person when there are a large number of people present in the tracking area. Therefore we develop a generalized fusion framework to combine measurements from aided and unaided systems to improve the tracking precision of the aided system and solve data association issues in the unaided system. The framework uses a Kalman filter to fuse measurements from multiple sensors. We test our approach on two unaided sensor systems: Light Detection And Ranging (LADAR) and a camera system. Our study investigates the impact of increasing the number of people in an indoor environment on the accuracies using a proposed fusion framework. From the results we observed that depending on the type of unaided sensor system used for augmentation, the improvement in precision ranged from 6-25% for up to 3 people

    User Experience Enchanced Interface ad Controller Design for Human-Robot Interaction

    The robotic technologies have been well developed recently in various fields, such as medical services, industrial manufacture and aerospace. Despite their rapid development, how to deal with the uncertain envi-ronment during human-robot interactions effectively still remains un-resolved. The current artificial intelligence (AI) technology does not support robots to fulfil complex tasks without human’s guidance. Thus, teleoperation, which means remotely controlling a robot by a human op-erator, is indispensable in many scenarios. It is an important and useful tool in research fields. This thesis focuses on the study of designing a user experience (UX) enhanced robot controller, and human-robot in-teraction interfaces that try providing human operators an immersion perception of teleoperation. Several works have been done to achieve the goal.First, to control a telerobot smoothly, a customised variable gain con-trol method is proposed where the stiffness of the telerobot varies with the muscle activation level extracted from signals collected by the surface electromyograph(sEMG) devices. Second, two main works are conducted to improve the user-friendliness of the interaction interfaces. One is that force feedback is incorporated into the framework providing operators with haptic feedback to remotely manipulate target objects. Given the high cost of force sensor, in this part of work, a haptic force estimation algorithm is proposed where force sensor is no longer needed. The other main work is developing a visual servo control system, where a stereo camera is mounted on the head of a dual arm robots offering operators real-time working situations. In order to compensate the internal and ex-ternal uncertainties and accurately track the stereo camera’s view angles along planned trajectories, a deterministic learning techniques is utilised, which enables reusing the learnt knowledge before current dynamics changes and thus features increasing the learning efficiency. Third, in-stead of sending commands to the telerobts by joy-sticks, keyboards or demonstrations, the telerobts are controlled directly by the upper limb motion of the human operator in this thesis. Algorithm that utilised the motion signals from inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor to captures humans’ upper limb motion is designed. The skeleton of the operator is detected by Kinect V2 and then transformed and mapped into the joint positions of the controlled robot arm. In this way, the upper limb mo-tion signals from the operator is able to act as reference trajectories to the telerobts. A more superior neural networks (NN) based trajectory controller is also designed to track the generated reference trajectory. Fourth, to further enhance the human immersion perception of teleop-eration, the virtual reality (VR) technique is incorporated such that the operator can make interaction and adjustment of robots easier and more accurate from a robot’s perspective.Comparative experiments have been performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design scheme.
