The growing rate of ICT utilization particularly the Internet and mobile phones has influenced at an exponential rate online interaction and communication among the generality of the populace. However, with the enormity of businesses on the Internet, Tanzania is yet to harness the opportunities for optimal financial gains. This study is exploratory in nature as it attempts to unveil the prospects of e-commerce implementation, participation, motivation and opportunity to the developing countries like Tanzania where by the domestic market is very big to ensure the growth of agricultural sector. The paper proposes to investigate the ability of consumers to purchase online, the available motivation to do so, and the opportunities for Internet access. We argue the Government and central bank to encourage innovative new technological developments by pre-regulating electronic money to familiarize itself with electronic money schemes generally. Findings revealed that Tanzanians have the ability to participate in e-commerce, but there is need for improved national image to bring in the element of trust and discipline within, and before the international communities. Currently, consumers source for information online but make purchases the traditional way

E-commerce can enable medium, small-sized enterprises in emerging markets to gain greater bargaining power for innovation in Tanzania’s economic growth, despite its limited capital and mobility. The rationale for the e-Commerce definition emanates from the fact that Tanzania has lagged behind in acquiring, adopting and using e-Commerce. Many factors could be responsible for the low usage of e-Commerce among the SMEs in Tanzania. In order to determine the factors that inhibit the adoption of e-Commerce, SMEs were confronted in their quest to indicate the factors intricate the adoption of e-Commerce, among those were: Organizational factor, Environmental factor, Political and legal (regulatory policies) factor and Communication factor, followed by lack of ICTs tools, lack of financial resources, online security and several other reasons. At the same time, the research provides insights into understanding e-Commerce adoption by SMEs in the context of Tanzani

It is important to lay out a framework for understanding how trade facilitation (TF) affects the movement of goods, and where information (IT) fits in. This relationship, in turn, sets the stage for locating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in international transactions. There is an increasing amount of substantial literature on TF and equally wide knowledge of IT. While it is not the intent of this chapter to survey these materials, to the extent that they are relevant to the following discussion, they will be referred to appropriately. Section A of this chapter elaborates on TF and the wide range of instruments that have been used and analyzed while section B details some actual experiences in the use of IT in TF. Section C examines small and medium-sized enterprises and IT in TF. Section D summarizes this chapter and considers the implications for inclusive growth.Trade facilitation, ICT, IT, SMEs,

The Digitalisation of African Agriculture Report 2018-2019

An inclusive, digitally-enabled agricultural transformation could help achieve meaningful livelihood improvements for Africa’s smallholder farmers and pastoralists. It could drive greater engagement in agriculture from women and youth and create employment opportunities along the value chain. At CTA we staked a claim on this power of digitalisation to more systematically transform agriculture early on. Digitalisation, focusing on not individual ICTs but the application of these technologies to entire value chains, is a theme that cuts across all of our work. In youth entrepreneurship, we are fostering a new breed of young ICT ‘agripreneurs’. In climate-smart agriculture multiple projects provide information that can help towards building resilience for smallholder farmers. And in women empowerment we are supporting digital platforms to drive greater inclusion for women entrepreneurs in agricultural value chains

A Review of the Significance of Block Chain Technology in Tanzania

A block chain refers to a distributed ledger that contains digital information that has been shared among various parties. It is different from other online platforms as it is more secure and difficult to duplicate. Thus, transactions that are shared on the blockchain platform cannot be compromised in any way.Block chain technology has gained significant recognition recently due to the merits that it offers to various businesses. Some of these benefits include reduced paperwork, more transparency, and security.Although, several African countries such as Ghana, Kenya, and Ethiopia have adopted block chain technology to enhance their businesses, the implementation of this technology in Tanzania is still lagging. To address this gap, this paper highlights the benefits of block chain technology and underlines the significance of adopting such a technology in various sectors in Tanzania. For instance, it has been noted that in the Tanzanian healthcare system patient records are being maintained manually, which makes it difficult for doctors to access the medical history of patients. Furthermore, there is also a tendency for medical reports to be stolen and tampered with. In contrast, it has been identified that land registration in Tanzania is weak and is mainly affected by bureaucracy, corruption, and lack of transparency. Furthermore, having such a weak land registration system has resulted in many impediments to society, such as conflicts which have resulted in the loss of life and property. In the Tanzanian banking sector, it has been identified that network failure, poor security, theft of funds are still issues that interfere with the effective performance of banks. In light of these drawbacks, the implementation of block chain technology can offer improved systems in Tanzania such as enhanced security in managing patient records, transparency in land registration systems and minimization of fraud in banks. Thus, in recognising the significance of blockchain technology in Tanzania, it is imperative for the government as well as various businesses sectors to invest in blockchains in order to derive the benefits. An ex-post-facto research design with paired sample test compared the mean values of the pre and post-e-tax system to confirm if the observation between the two sets of mean is zero or significantly different from zero. -- Findings: The results depict that the use of the e-tax system has positive significant impact on tax revenue generation. Correspondingly, increase in number of registered large taxpayers has a positive effect on tax revenue. -- Originality/Value: This study contributes on the awareness to both large taxpayers and the government, that is, the use of the e-tax system had an impact on lessening tax compliance cost and assists the government to collect taxes in cost efficient ways.peer-reviewe

Barriers of digital transformation: The case of small indigenous businesses in Indonesia during COVID-19

An indigenous craft, Batik permeates the lives of Indonesians and represents national pride. Often established as a female-headed family enterprise, small Batik businesses in Indonesia’s Madura region are handed down from one generation to another and operate on a traditional brick-and-mortar retail channel, relying heavily on tourism to attract customers. COVID-19 lockdown has crippled that trading chain. E-commerce trading through digital platforms, such as e-marketplaces and social media, seems to be the only viable solution. A study of 12 small Batik businesses in Madura prior to, and after, the COVID-19 lockdown suggests significant barriers exist to digitally transform these businesses. Besides the usual environment, and socio-economic barriers to digital innovation such as illiteracy and lack of digital skills, reliance on younger family members and community support, indigeneity aspects such as ecological condition, socio-culture value and local wisdom, have been found to deter the transformation. We discuss the implications of these findings and suggest avenues for further exploration

Abstract        Globally, countries endeavor toward improving tax compliance behavior with the ultimate goal of increasing tax revenue collection. This study examined the quality of the e-tax system and its effect on the tax compliance behavior of large taxpayers in Tanzania. The data were gathered from 313 large taxpayers from three regions in Tanzania, namely Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Arusha. The study employed Information System Success Model (The IS model) with constructs service quality, system quality, information quality, user satisfaction, behavioral intention, and tax compliance behavior (actual behavior). A Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS3 was used to evaluate the latent variables and their indicators.  The results showed that behavioral intention to use the e-tax system has the strongest effect on tax compliance behavior. Thus, service and information quality had an incredible effect on creating eagerness to accept and utilize the e-tax system which improves tax compliance behavior. However system quality has not shown a significant effect on tax compliance behavio
