A Novel Optical/digital Processing System for Pattern Recognition

    Get PDF
This paper describes two processing algorithms that can be implemented optically: the Radon transform and angular correlation. These two algorithms can be combined in one optical processor to extract all the basic geometric and amplitude features from objects embedded in video imagery. We show that the internal amplitude structure of objects is recovered by the Radon transform, which is a well-known result, but, in addition, we show simulation results that calculate angular correlation, a simple but unique algorithm that extracts object boundaries from suitably threshold images from which length, width, area, aspect ratio, and orientation can be derived. In addition to circumventing scale and rotation distortions, these simulations indicate that the features derived from the angular correlation algorithm are relatively insensitive to tracking shifts and image noise. Some optical architecture concepts, including one based on micro-optical lenslet arrays, have been developed to implement these algorithms. Simulation test and evaluation using simple synthetic object data will be described, including results of a study that uses object boundaries (derivable from angular correlation) to classify simple objects using a neural network

Optimal analog wavelet bases construction using hybrid optimization algorithm

    Get PDF
An approach for the construction of optimal analog wavelet bases is presented. First, the definition of an analog wavelet is given. Based on the definition and the least-squares error criterion, a general framework for designing optimal analog wavelet bases is established, which is one of difficult nonlinear constrained optimization problems. Then, to solve this problem, a hybrid algorithm by combining chaotic map particle swarm optimization (CPSO) with local sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is proposed. CPSO is an improved PSO in which the saw tooth chaotic map is used to raise its global search ability. CPSO is a global optimizer to search the estimates of the global solution, while the SQP is employed for the local search and refining the estimates. Benefiting from good global search ability of CPSO and powerful local search ability of SQP, a high-precision global optimum in this problem can be gained. Finally, a series of optimal analog wavelet bases are constructed using the hybrid algorithm. The proposed method is tested for various wavelet bases and the improved performance is compared with previous works.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

On the impact of communication complexity in the design of parallel numerical algorithms

    Get PDF
This paper describes two models of the cost of data movement in parallel numerical algorithms. One model is a generalization of an approach due to Hockney, and is suitable for shared memory multiprocessors where each processor has vector capabilities. The other model is applicable to highly parallel nonshared memory MIMD systems. In the second model, algorithm performance is characterized in terms of the communication network design. Techniques used in VLSI complexity theory are also brought in, and algorithm independent upper bounds on system performance are derived for several problems that are important to scientific computation

Microprocessor- Oriented Algorithms for Data Communications

    Get PDF
Data modem design has attracted a lot of scientific and commercial interest for more than three decades now. The field is important from a scientific point of view, since reliable data communications require very sophisticated solutions to many associated problems. From a commercial point of view its importance arises from the ever- rising needs for Computer networking and distributed processing in general. Modem algorithms are real-time in nature, so adequate technological support is important for modem design development. Advances in VLSI are opening new possibilities in this area and current trends toward integration of computing and communications are placing new demands on its further development. One can say that data modem design is entering its renaissance and this fact was our motivation in preparing this text. The objective is to bridge the gap between the increasing number of published papers on modem design and implementation, and the rapidly growing interest in the field. Included in the text are topics to introduce and familiarize the reader with modem design. Topics covered include: microprocessor applications in communications, data modem types, microprocessor and VLSI types, and technological impacts on design. Finally, we address the hardware issues such as the processor elements and interfacing, and software issues like the digital filter implementation. A comprehensive bibliography on modem design and implementation is also provided. With this bibliography one can research VLSI/microprocessor-based data modem design easily and thoroughly
