Durable Digital Objects Rather Than Digital Preservation

Long-term digital preservation is not the best available objective. Instead, what information producers and consumers almost surely want is a universe of durable digital objects—documents and programs that will be as accessible and useful a century from now as they are today. Given the will, we could implement and deploy a practical and pleasing durability infrastructure within two years. Tools for daily work can embed packaging for durability without much burdening their users. Moving responsibility for durability from archival employees to information producers would also avoid burdening repositories with keeping up with Internet scale. An engineering prescription is available. Research libraries’ and archives’ slow advance towards practical preservation of digital content is remarkable to outsiders. Why does their progress seem stalled? Ineffective collaboration across disciplinary boundaries has surely been a major impediment. We speculate about cultural reasons for this situation and warn about possible marginalization of research librarianship as a profession.

Designing a state-of-the-science, accredited, commercially-successful biorepository utilizing ISO:9001(2008) quality management system requirements to construct the framework

The research community relies upon biorepositories’ ability to prepare for the scientific advancement that can precipitate the discoveries of the future. Furthermore, as the complexities, financial pressure, and quality issues biorepositories face continue to unfold, it is imperative to explore unmet needs researchers may have for biorepository services as well as evaluate the commercial potential, funding, and competitiveness of a new biorepository. With the goal of contributing to medical and scientific research and the biorepository field, this paper utilizes principles from ISO 9001:2008 “Quality management systems- Requirements” to outline and explore the challenges in establishing a state-of-the-science, accredited, commercial BSL-2 biorepository in order to support academic, clinical, and translational research. In addition, this paper provides detailed quality assurance strategies to meet investigator’s needs, ensure high quality, fit-for-purpose biospecimens, and, most importantly, protect and preserve the biospecimens entrusted to its care

Fifteen-foot diameter modular space station Kennedy Space Center launch site support definition (space station program Phase B extension definition)

This document defines the facilities, equipment, and operational plans required to support the MSS Program at KSC. Included is an analysis of KSC operations, a definition of flow plans, facility utilization and modifications, test plans and concepts, activation, and tradeoff studies. Existing GSE and facilities that have a potential utilization are identified, and new items are defined where possible. The study concludes that the existing facilities are suitable for use in the space station program without major modification from the Saturn-Apollo configuration

Consolidated List of Requirements

This document is a consolidated catalogue of requirements for the Electronic Health Care Record (EHCR) and Electronic Health Care Record Architecture (EHCRA), gleaned largely from work done in the EU Framework III and IV programmes and CEN, but also including input from other sources including world-wide standardisation initiatives. The document brings together the relevant work done into a classified inventory of requirements to inform the on-going standardisation process as well as act as a guide to future implementation of EHCRA-based systems. It is meant as a contribution both to understanding of the standard and to the work that is being considered to improve the standard. Major features include the classification into issues affecting the Health Care Record, the EHCR, EHCR processing, EHCR interchange and the sharing of health care information and EHCR systems. The principal information sources are described briefly. It is offered as documentation that is complementary to the four documents of the ENV 13606 Parts I-IV produced by CEN Pts 26,27,28,29. User Interface Migration of Web Applications with Task continuity and Platform Adaptation Support

This thesis shows the work undertaken for supporting user interface migration of web applications. Interface migration occurs when a user interacting with an application switches to a different device and the application interface is transferred onto the new device. Migration must be supported by a platform aware system able to perform interface adaptation that keeps into account the different features of the devices involved, in order to keep the interface usability. Beside adaptation, continuity is the main matter. Once the interface migrates onto a new device, the interaction can be continued without having to restart the application from the beginning. Different types of migration can occur and supporting them poses different level of difficulty. This thesis analyses the various types of migration and describes the client-server architecture implemented for supporting all of them. The thesis shows how the migration service evolved starting from a first core of basic functionalities supporting the easiest situation to the most challenging one
