    Introducing linked open data in graph-based recommender systems

    Thanks to the recent spread of the Linked Open Data (LOD) initiative, a huge amount of machine-readable knowledge encoded as RDF statements is today available in the so-called LOD cloud. Accordingly, a big effort is now spent to investigate to what extent such information can be exploited to develop new knowledge-based services or to improve the effectiveness of knowledge-intensive platforms as Recommender Systems (RS). To this end, in this article we study the impact of the exogenous knowledge coming from the LOD cloud on the overall performance of a graph-based recommendation framework. Specifically, we propose a methodology to automatically feed a graph-based RS with features gathered from the LOD cloud and we analyze the impact of several widespread feature selection techniques in such recommendation settings. The experimental evaluation, performed on three state-of-the-art datasets, provided several outcomes: first, information extracted from the LOD cloud can significantly improve the performance of a graph-based RS. Next, experiments showed a clear correlation between the choice of the feature selection technique and the ability of the algorithm to maximize specific evaluation metrics, as accuracy or diversity of the recommendations. Moreover, our graph-based algorithm fed with LOD-based features was able to overcome several baselines, as collaborative filtering and matrix factorization

    Crowdsourcing Emotions in Music Domain

    An important source of intelligence for music emotion recognition today comes from user-provided community tags about songs or artists. Recent crowdsourcing approaches such as harvesting social tags, design of collaborative games and web services or the use of Mechanical Turk, are becoming popular in the literature. They provide a cheap, quick and efficient method, contrary to professional labeling of songs which is expensive and does not scale for creating large datasets. In this paper we discuss the viability of various crowdsourcing instruments providing examples from research works. We also share our own experience, illustrating the steps we followed using tags collected from Last.fm for the creation of two music mood datasets which are rendered public. While processing affect tags of Last.fm, we observed that they tend to be biased towards positive emotions; the resulting dataset thus contain more positive songs than negative ones

    Video Recommendations Based on Visual Features Extracted with Deep Learning

    Postponed access: the file will be accessible after 2022-06-01When a movie is uploaded to a movie Recommender System (e.g., YouTube), the system can exploit various forms of descriptive features (e.g., tags and genre) in order to generate personalized recommendation for users. However, there are situations where the descriptive features are missing or very limited and the system may fail to include such a movie in the recommendation list, known as Cold-start problem. This thesis investigates recommendation based on a novel form of content features, extracted from movies, in order to generate recommendation for users. Such features represent the visual aspects of movies, based on Deep Learning models, and hence, do not require any human annotation when extracted. The proposed technique has been evaluated in both offline and online evaluations using a large dataset of movies. The online evaluation has been carried out in a evaluation framework developed for this thesis. Results from the offline and online evaluation (N=150) show that automatically extracted visual features can mitigate the cold-start problem by generating recommendation with a superior quality compared to different baselines, including recommendation based on human-annotated features. The results also point to subtitles as a high-quality future source of automatically extracted features.     PERSONALIZED INDEXING OF MUSIC BY EMOTIONS

    How a person interprets music and what prompts a person to feel certain emotions are two very subjective things. This dissertation presents a method where a system can learn and track a user’s listening habits with the purpose of recommending songs that fit the user’s specific way of interpreting music and emotions. First a literature review is presented which shows an overview of the current state of recommender systems, as well as describing classifiers; then the process of collecting user data is discussed; then the process of training and testing personalized classifiers is described; finally a system combining the personalized classifiers with clustered data into a hierarchy of recommender systems is presented

    Integrating content and semantic representations for music recommendation.

    Music recommender systems are used by millions of people every day to discover new and exciting music. Central to making recommendations is the representation of each track, which may be used to calculate similarity. Content representations capture the musical and texture facets of each track, and semantic representations describe social and cultural information provided by listeners. This thesis is motivated by an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of both content and semantic representations. Content representations can be available for all tracks in a collection, but provide poor recommendation quality. Semantic representations suffer from the cold-start problem and are not available for all tracks, but provide good recommendation quality when a strong representation is available. These observations highlight the need to integrate both content and semantic representations, and use the strengths of each to improve music recommendation quality and discovery. A bridge of the gap between content and semantic representations is achieved in this thesis through hybrid representation. Content texture representations are examined, and a new music-inspired texture representation is defined. This content is integrated with semantic tags directly, and through a mid-level pseudo-tag representation. The effect of these approaches is to increase the high quality discovery of tracks, and to allow users to uncover interesting novel recommendations. The challenge of evaluating music recommendations when many tracks are undertagged is addressed. Implicit and explicit feedback provided by users is exploited to define a new ground truth similarity measure, which accurately reflects how different recommendation methods perform. A user study is conducted to evaluate both this measure, and the performance of integrated representations for recommending strong novel recommendations

    Recommender Systems

    The ongoing rapid expansion of the Internet greatly increases the necessity of effective recommender systems for filtering the abundant information. Extensive research for recommender systems is conducted by a broad range of communities including social and computer scientists, physicists, and interdisciplinary researchers. Despite substantial theoretical and practical achievements, unification and comparison of different approaches are lacking, which impedes further advances. In this article, we review recent developments in recommender systems and discuss the major challenges. We compare and evaluate available algorithms and examine their roles in the future developments. In addition to algorithms, physical aspects are described to illustrate macroscopic behavior of recommender systems. Potential impacts and future directions are discussed. We emphasize that recommendation has a great scientific depth and combines diverse research fields which makes it of interests for physicists as well as interdisciplinary researchers.Comment: 97 pages, 20 figures (To appear in Physics Reports

    Robust Recommender System: A Survey and Future Directions

    With the rapid growth of information, recommender systems have become integral for providing personalized suggestions and overcoming information overload. However, their practical deployment often encounters "dirty" data, where noise or malicious information can lead to abnormal recommendations. Research on improving recommender systems' robustness against such dirty data has thus gained significant attention. This survey provides a comprehensive review of recent work on recommender systems' robustness. We first present a taxonomy to organize current techniques for withstanding malicious attacks and natural noise. We then explore state-of-the-art methods in each category, including fraudster detection, adversarial training, certifiable robust training against malicious attacks, and regularization, purification, self-supervised learning against natural noise. Additionally, we summarize evaluation metrics and common datasets used to assess robustness. We discuss robustness across varying recommendation scenarios and its interplay with other properties like accuracy, interpretability, privacy, and fairness. Finally, we delve into open issues and future research directions in this emerging field. Our goal is to equip readers with a holistic understanding of robust recommender systems and spotlight pathways for future research and development

    Semantic Federation of Musical and Music-Related Information for Establishing a Personal Music Knowledge Base

    Music is perceived and described very subjectively by every individual. Nowadays, people often get lost in their steadily growing, multi-placed, digital music collection. Existing music player and management applications get in trouble when dealing with poor metadata that is predominant in personal music collections. There are several music information services available that assist users by providing tools for precisely organising their music collection, or for presenting them new insights into their own music library and listening habits. However, it is still not the case that music consumers can seamlessly interact with all these auxiliary services directly from the place where they access their music individually. To profit from the manifold music and music-related knowledge that is or can be available via various information services, this information has to be gathered up, semantically federated, and integrated into a uniform knowledge base that can personalised represent this data in an appropriate visualisation to the users. This personalised semantic aggregation of music metadata from several sources is the gist of this thesis. The outlined solution particularly concentrates on users’ needs regarding music collection management which can strongly alternate between single human beings. The author’s proposal, the personal music knowledge base (PMKB), consists of a client-server architecture with uniform communication endpoints and an ontological knowledge representation model format that is able to represent the versatile information of its use cases. The PMKB concept is appropriate to cover the complete information flow life cycle, including the processes of user account initialisation, information service choice, individual information extraction, and proactive update notification. The PMKB implementation makes use of SemanticWeb technologies. Particularly the knowledge representation part of the PMKB vision is explained in this work. Several new Semantic Web ontologies are defined or existing ones are massively modified to meet the requirements of a personalised semantic federation of music and music-related data for managing personal music collections. The outcome is, amongst others, • a new vocabulary for describing the play back domain, • another one for representing information service categorisations and quality ratings, and • one that unites the beneficial parts of the existing advanced user modelling ontologies. The introduced vocabularies can be perfectly utilised in conjunction with the existing Music Ontology framework. Some RDFizers that also make use of the outlined ontologies in their mapping definitions, illustrate the fitness in practise of these specifications. A social evaluation method is applied to carry out an examination dealing with the reutilisation, application and feedback of the vocabularies that are explained in this work. This analysis shows that it is a good practise to properly publish Semantic Web ontologies with the help of some Linked Data principles and further basic SEO techniques to easily reach the searching audience, to avoid duplicates of such KR specifications, and, last but not least, to directly establish a \"shared understanding\". Due to their project-independence, the proposed vocabularies can be deployed in every knowledge representation model that needs their knowledge representation capacities.     Semantically-enhanced advertisement recommender systems in social networks

    El objetivo principal de la investigación es estudiar y diseñar un entorno de recomendación publicitaria en las redes sociales que puede ser enriquecido mediante tecnologías semánticas. A pesar de que existen muchas aplicaciones y soluciones para los sistemas de recomendación, en este estudio se diseña un framework robusto con un rendimiento adecuado para poder ser implementado en las redes sociales con el objetivo de ampliar los propósitos de negocio. De este objetivo principal se pueden derivar los siguientes objetivos secundarios: 1. Superar las limitaciones iniciales de los métodos clásicos de recomendación. 2. Aumentar la calidad y precisión de las recomendaciones y el rendimiento del sistema de recomendación. 3. Utilizar convenientemente la metodología planteada. 4. Establecer el marco propuesto en una plataforma de software real. 5. Considerar en la solución la portabilidad como un aspecto clave en los sistemas de software. 6. Considerar la fiabilidad del framework. 7. Tener un nivel de seguridad aceptable para el framework. En primer lugar, es necesario superar las limitaciones de los métodos clásicos de recomendación. En el presente trabajo, este objetivo se alcanzará mediante un método híbrido que se componga de los cuatro métodos básicos de recomendación (filtrado colaborativo, basado en contenido, demográfico y basado en conocimiento), y que recoja cada uno de los beneficios individuales de los mismos. En concreto, a pesar de los problemas conocidos de los métodos basados en filtrado colaborativo, a saber, escasez de datos (del inglés ‘data sparsity’), escalabilidad y arranque en frio (del inglés ‘cold start’), sigue siendo fundamental aprovechar las ventajas de esta técnica colaborativa de recomendación. Además, mediante la adición de técnicas semánticas durante el proceso de cálculo de las recomendaciones publicitarias, se aumentará la calidad y precisión de éstas. La tecnología semántica utilizada en el marco ha mejorado el rendimiento del sistema y supone un punto novedoso, siendo ésta una de las principales contribuciones frente al resto de investigaciones similares. En particular, para mejorar la exactitud de las recomendaciones, la semántica tanto de los distintos elementos de información como de los perfiles de clientes se ha tenido en cuenta. Introducir la semántica en el pronóstico proporciona una visión adicional sobre las explicaciones básicas detrás de las cuales un cliente podría permitir el acceso a productos específicos (algo que se entiende y se cubre con estrategias habituales sin consideración semántica). La semántica utilizada en este estudio es entendida en forma de relaciones entre conceptos. Como resultado, es posible extraer un conocimiento extra de los elementos disponibles. Otro de los objetivos de esta tesis es asegurar que se siga una metodología apropiada. Es necesario que la investigación obtenga resultados aceptables mediante la implementación de algoritmos fáciles de usar y un enfoque adecuado. Para alcanzar este objetivo, se diseña un caso de estudio, y posteriormente se implementa una aplicación Web capaz de determinar recomendaciones para los usuarios. El desarrollo de esta aplicación Web tiene sus propias dificultades y complejidades, pero la aplicación es amigable y fácil de usar. Los usuarios pueden navegar fácilmente en línea y trabajar con las aplicaciones instaladas en el sitio Web. La evaluación de la aproximación propuesta se realizará sobre este entorno real. De esta forma, también se establece como objetivo el establecer el framework en una plataforma de software real para probarlo y observar el rendimiento del mismo. Este objetivo es muy importante dado que si no existe la posibilidad de establecer un prototipo (prueba de concepto) para implementar la idea de la investigación, no será posible llegar a una conclusión adecuada y alcanzar los objetivos del estudio. Así, antes de desarrollar la idea de la investigación, se verificó si era posible encontrar una solución de software para obtener resultados reales en el marco implementado que permitiera posteriormente observar el resultado adecuado y, de este modo, asegurase de que los objetivos y requerimientos iniciales de la investigación en forma de resultados finales pueden ser probados. Asegurar la portabilidad y la fiabilidad es otra de las claves perseguidas en este trabajo. En este contexto, la portabilidad hace referencia a la posibilidad de implementar el framework en distintas plataformas disponibles incluyendo hardware, software, tipo de red social y publicidad. En este caso, el diseño del marco es independiente de cualquier plataforma. El framework se ha propuesto en un formato general y es muy fácil ajustarlo a los sistemas de software y hardware disponibles. Incluso es posible establecer el marco en diferentes sistemas operativos y no hay limitación en el número de instancias de instalación. Por otro lado, la fiabilidad, similar a la validez, es un método para evaluar la naturaleza de la estrategia de estimación utilizada para recopilar información en un estudio. En conjunto, para que los resultados de un estudio se consideren sustanciales, el sistema de estimación debe ser sólido. Lo que se persigue con la fiabilidad es que cualquier resultado crítico sea más que un hallazgo irregular y sea, por tanto, repetible. Distintos científicos deben tener la capacidad de realizar la misma investigación, en las mismas condiciones y producir los mismos resultados. Esto fortalecerá los descubrimientos y garantizará que grupos académicos más extensos reconozcan la teoría. La fiabilidad entendida de este modo es, en consecuencia, esencial para que una teoría se acumule como una verdad experimental reconocida. En esta tesis doctoral se realizan sobre la aplicación Web un total de 73 experimentos, resultando en un nivel prometedor de fiabilidad. Por último, la seguridad es uno de los retos fundamentales en las aplicaciones de la Web social y constituye un requisito básico del marco de trabajo propuesto en esta tesis. La seguridad es, en realidad, una de las principales preocupaciones de todas las aplicaciones software y la implementación del marco en una plataforma segura es, por tanto, muy importante. Para ello se consideró el componente de seguridad como uno de los elementos del marco, el cual se compone de diferentes niveles: (i) autenticación, y (ii) comprobación de identidad a partir del comportamiento. La autenticación única (‘SSO’ del inglés, Single Sign-On) permite a los usuarios loguearse en el sistema. Por otro lado, se mantiene un registro del comportamiento del usuario en las interacciones con la aplicación Web y se compara éste con el histórico. Este segundo nivel de seguridad previene el acceso de atacantes a contenidos no autorizados.The composition of Semantic Web advances with Web 2.0 application plan designs has risen to the social semantic Web, additionally introduced as Web 3.0. In accordance with this thought, a software platform will be displayed that effectively joins both Web 2.0 ideas and Semantic Web advancements. The structure of this study joins a progression of semantic-based application modules in a completely fledged social application with the goal of catching semantics in the purpose of information retrieval. Once the establishments and principle ideas of the alluded framework are brought up and its architecture was explained, a comprehensive model of the system will be demonstrated.
