    Segmentation and classification of individual tree crowns

    By segmentation and classification of individual tree crowns in high spatial resolution aerial images, information about the forest can be automatically extracted. Segmentation is about finding the individual tree crowns and giving each of them a unique label. Classification, on the other hand, is about recognising the species of the tree. The information of each individual tree in the forest increases the knowledge about the forest which can be useful for managements, biodiversity assessment, etc. Different algorithms for segmenting individual tree crowns are presented and also compared to each other in order to find their strengths and weaknesses. All segmentation algorithms developed in this thesis focus on preserving the shape of the tree crown. Regions, representing the segmented tree crowns, grow according to certain rules from seed points. One method starts from many regions for each tree crown and searches for the region that fits the tree crown best. The other methods start from a set of seed points, representing the locations of the tree crowns, to create the regions. The segmentation result varies from 73 to 95 % correctly segmented visual tree crowns depending on the type of forest and the method. The former value is for a naturally generated mixed forest and the latter for a non-mixed forest. The classification method presented uses shape information of the segments and colour information of the corresponding tree crown in order to decide the species. The classification method classifies 77 % of the visual trees correctly in a naturally generated mixed forest, but on a forest stand level the classification is over 90 %

    Texture features based microscopic image classification of liver cellular granuloma using artificial neural networks

    Automated classification of Schistosoma mansoni granulomatous microscopic images of mice liver using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is a key issue for accurate diagnosis and treatment. In this paper, three grey difference statistics-based features, namely three Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) based features and fifteen Gray Gradient Co-occurrence Matrix (GGCM) features were calculated by correlative analysis. Ten features were selected for three-level cellular granuloma classification using a Scaled Conjugate Gradient Back-Propagation Neural Network (SCG-BPNN) in the same performance. A cross-entropy is then calculated to evaluate the proposed Sigmoid input and the ten-hidden layer network. The results depicted that SCG-BPNN with texture features performs high recognition rate compared to using morphological features, such as shape, size, contour, thickness and other geometry-based features for the classification. The proposed method also has a high accuracy rate of 87.2% compared to the Back-Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), Back-Propagation Hopfield Neural Network (BPHNN) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)

    Vision-Based Localization Algorithm Based on Landmark Matching, Triangulation, Reconstruction, and Comparison

    Many generic position-estimation algorithms are vulnerable to ambiguity introduced by nonunique landmarks. Also, the available high-dimensional image data is not fully used when these techniques are extended to vision-based localization. This paper presents the landmark matching, triangulation, reconstruction, and comparison (LTRC) global localization algorithm, which is reasonably immune to ambiguous landmark matches. It extracts natural landmarks for the (rough) matching stage before generating the list of possible position estimates through triangulation. Reconstruction and comparison then rank the possible estimates. The LTRC algorithm has been implemented using an interpreted language, onto a robot equipped with a panoramic vision system. Empirical data shows remarkable improvement in accuracy when compared with the established random sample consensus method. LTRC is also robust against inaccurate map data

    In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work

    Identification of pore spaces in 3D CT soil images using a PFCM partitional clustering

    Recent advances in non-destructive imaging techniques, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT), make it possible to analyse pore space features from the direct visualisation from soil structures. A quantitative characterisation of the three-dimensional solid-pore architecture is important to understand soil mechanics, as they relate to the control of biological, chemical, and physical processes across scales. This analysis technique therefore offers an opportunity to better interpret soil strata, as new and relevant information can be obtained. In this work, we propose an approach to automatically identify the pore structure of a set of 200-2D images that represent slices of an original 3D CT image of a soil sample, which can be accomplished through non-linear enhancement of the pixel grey levels and an image segmentation based on a PFCM (Possibilistic Fuzzy C-Means) algorithm. Once the solids and pore spaces have been identified, the set of 200-2D images is then used to reconstruct an approximation of the soil sample by projecting only the pore spaces. This reconstruction shows the structure of the soil and its pores, which become more bounded, less bounded, or unbounded with changes in depth. If the soil sample image quality is sufficiently favourable in terms of contrast, noise and sharpness, the pore identification is less complicated, and the PFCM clustering algorithm can be used without additional processing; otherwise, images require pre-processing before using this algorithm. Promising results were obtained with four soil samples, the first of which was used to show the algorithm validity and the additional three were used to demonstrate the robustness of our proposal. The methodology we present here can better detect the solid soil and pore spaces on CT images, enabling the generation of better 2D?3D representations of pore structures from segmented 2D images

    A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of University of LutonVisual inspection of defects is an important part of quality assurance in many fields of production. It plays a very useful role in industrial applications in order to relieve human inspectors and improve the inspection accuracy and hence increasing productivity. Research has previously been done in defect classification of wood veneers using techniques such as neural networks, and a certain degree of success has been achieved. However, to improve results in tenus of both classification accuracy and running time are necessary if the techniques are to be widely adopted in industry, which has motivated this research. This research presents a method using rough sets based neural network with fuzzy input (RNNFI). Variable precision rough set (VPRS) method is proposed to remove redundant features utilising the characteristics of VPRS for data analysis and processing. The reduced data is fuzzified to represent the feature data in a more suitable foml for input to an improved BP neural network classifier. The improved BP neural network classifier is improved in three aspects: additional momentum, self-adaptive learning rates and dynamic error segmenting. Finally, to further consummate the classifier, a uniform design CUD) approach is introduced to optimise the key parameters because UD can generate a minimal set of uniform and representative design points scattered within the experiment domain. Optimal factor settings are achieved using a response surface (RSM) model and the nonlinear quadratic programming algorithm (NLPQL). Experiments have shown that the hybrid method is capable of classifying the defects of wood veneers with a fast convergence speed and high classification accuracy, comparing with other methods such as a neural network with fuzzy input and a rough sets based neural network. The research has demonstrated a methodology for visual inspection of defects, especially for situations where there is a large amount of data and a fast running speed is required. It is expected that this method can be applied to automatic visual inspection for production lines of other products such as ceramic tiles and strip steel

    A Hybrid Technique for Medical Image Segmentation

    Medical image segmentation is an essential and challenging aspect in computer-aided diagnosis and also in pattern recognition research. This paper proposes a hybrid method for magnetic resonance (MR) image segmentation. We first remove impulsive noise inherent in MR images by utilizing a vector median filter. Subsequently, Otsu thresholding is used as an initial coarse segmentation method that finds the homogeneous regions of the input image. Finally, an enhanced suppressed fuzzy c-means is used to partition brain MR images into multiple segments, which employs an optimal suppression factor for the perfect clustering in the given data set. To evaluate the robustness of the proposed approach in noisy environment, we add different types of noise and different amount of noise to T1-weighted brain MR images. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other FCM based algorithms in terms of segmentation accuracy for both noise-free and noise-inserted MR images
