    Just Queuing: Policy-Based Scheduling Mechanism for Packet Switching Networks

    The pervasiveness of the Internet and its applications lead to the potential increment of the users’ demands for more services with economical prices. The diversity of Internet traffic requires some classification and prioritisation since some traffic deserve much attention with less delay and loss compared to others. Current scheduling mechanisms are exposed to the trade-off between three major properties namely fairness, complexity and protection. Therefore, the question remains about how to improve the fairness and protection with less complex implementation. This research is designed to enhance scheduling mechanism by providing sustainability to the fairness and protection properties with simplicity in implementation; and hence higher service quality particularly for real-time applications. Extra elements are applied to the main fairness equation to improve the fairness property. This research adopts the restricted charge policy which imposes the protection of normal user. In terms of the complexity property, genetic algorithm has an advantage in holding the fitness score of the queue in separate storage space which potentially minimises the complexity of the algorithm. The integrity between conceptual, analytical and experimental approach verifies the efficiency of the proposed mechanism. The proposed mechanism is validated by using the emulation and the validation experiments involve real router flow data. The results of the evaluation showed fair bandwidth distribution similar to the popular Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ) mechanism. Furthermore, better protection was exhibited in the results compared with the WFQ and two other scheduling mechanisms. The complexity of the proposed mechanism reached O(log(n)) which is considered as potentially low. Furthermore, this mechanism is limited to the wired networks and hence future works could improve the mechanism to be adopted in mobile ad-hoc networks or any other wireless networks. Moreover, more improvements could be applied to the proposed mechanism to enhance its deployment in the virtual circuits switching network such as the asynchronous transfer mode networks

    Non-weighted aggregate evaluation function of multi-objective optimization for knock engine modeling

    In decision theory, the weighted sum model (WSM) is the best known Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) approach for evaluating a number of alternatives in terms of a number of decision criteria. Assigning weights is a difficult task, especially if the number of criteria is large and the criteria are very different in character. There are some problems in the real world which utilize conflicting criteria and mutual effect. In the field of automotive, the knocking phenomenon in internal combustion or spark ignition engines limits the efficiency of the engine. Power and fuel economy can be maximized by optimizing some factors that affect the knocking phenomenon, such as temperature, throttle position sensor, spark ignition timing, and revolution per minute. Detecting knocks and controlling the above factors or criteria may allow the engine to run at the best power and fuel economy. The best decision must arise from selecting the optimum trade-off within the above criteria. The main objective of this study was to proposed a new Non-Weighted Aggregate Evaluation Function (NWAEF) model for non-linear multi-objectives function which will simulate the engine knock behavior (non-linear dependent variable) in order to optimize non-linear decision factors (non-linear independent variables). This study has focused on the construction of a NWAEF model by using a curve fitting technique and partial derivatives. It also aims to optimize the nonlinear nature of the factors by using Genetic Algorithm (GA) as well as investigate the behavior of such function. This study assumes that a partial and mutual influence between factors is required before such factors can be optimized. The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) is used to balance the complexity of the model and the data loss, which can help assess the range of the tested models and choose the best ones. Some statistical tools are also used in this thesis to assess and identify the most powerful explanation in the model. The first derivative is used to simplify the form of evaluation function. The NWAEF model was compared to Random Weights Genetic Algorithm (RWGA) model by using five data sets taken from different internal combustion engines. There was a relatively large variation in elapsed time to get to the best solution between the two model. Experimental results in application aspect (Internal combustion engines) show that the new model participates in decreasing the elapsed time. This research provides a form of knock control within the subspace that can enhance the efficiency and performance of the engine, improve fuel economy, and reduce regulated emissions and pollution. Combined with new concepts in the engine design, this model can be used for improving the control strategies and providing accurate information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), which will control the knock faster and ensure the perfect condition of the engine

    Discrete-event simulation is one of the most popular modelling techniques. It has developed significantly since the inception of computer simulation in the 1950s, most of this in line with developments in computing. The progress of simulation from its early days is charted with a particular focus on recent history. Specific developments in the past 15 years include visual interactive modelling, simulation optimization, virtual reality, integration with other software, simulation in the service sector, distributed simulation and the use of the worldwide web. The future is then speculated upon. Potential changes in model development, model use, the domain of application for simulation and integration with other simulation approaches are all discussed. The desirability of continuing to follow developments in computing, without significant developments in the wider methodology of simulation, is questioned

    Review on bio-based plastic for future applications

    This paper reviews the future applications of bio-based plastics. Most plastics are made through petrochemical processes. In other words, they start out as the chemical byproducts of oil refining, which are turned into a variety of plastics through chemical processes that form long molecular chains known as polymers. These polymers give plastics their structure. Bioplastics are biodegradable materials that come from renewable sources and can be used to reduce the problem of plastic waste that is suffocating the planet and contaminating the environment. The advantages of using bioplastics are bioplastics won’t leach chemicals into food, non- toxic and offer a zero waste end life options. Bioplastics can be recycled with conventional plastics to produce a great material for food packaging. It also has a socio�economic benefit that often have a positive impact on the consumers who are increasingly becoming aware of environmental issues. As conclusion, it is proven that bioplastics give promising future to cleaner and safer world

    Simulation modelling software approaches to manufacturing problems

    Increased competition in many industries has resulted in a greater emphasis on developing and using advanced manufacturing systems to improve productivity and reduce costs. The complexity and dynamic behaviour of such systems, make simulation modelling one of the most popular methods to facilitate the design and assess operating strategies of these systems. The growing need for the use of simulation is reflected by a growth in the number of simulation languages and data-driven simulators in the software market. This thesis investigates which characteristics typical manufacturing simulators possess, and how the user requirements can be better fulfilled. For the purpose of software evaluation, a case study has been carried out on a real manufacturing system. Several simulation models of an automated system for electrostatic powder coating have been developed using different simulators. In addition to the evaluation of these simulators, a comprehensive evaluation framework has been developed to facilitate selection of simulation software for modelling manufacturing systems. Different hierarchies of evaluation criteria have been established for different software purposes. In particular, the criteria that have to be satisfied for users in education differ from those for users in industry. A survey has also been conducted involving a number of users of software for manufacturing simulation. The purpose of the survey was to investigate users' opinions about simulation software, and the features that they desire to be incorporated in simulation software. A methodology for simulation software selection is also derived. It consists of guidelines related to the actions to be taken and factors to be considered during the evaluation and selection of simulation software. On the basis of all the findings, proposals on how manufacturing simulators can be improved are made, both for use in education and in industry. These software improvements should result in a reduction in the amount of time and effort needed for simulation model development, and therefore make simulation more beneficial

    Construction time-cost model in Croatia

    The paper deals with the applicability of the time-cost model for calculating the sustainable construction time for building projects in Croatia. In this model the time is expressed as a function of money in the project, while the specific constants K and B need to be determined. These constants depend on economic characteristics of the country or a larger area, therefore had to be separately calculated for a region with similar economic characteristics. The modelling of the constants was performed for two groups of building projects - the roads and residential and office multi-storey buildings. The obtained results have been analyzed and compared to the corresponding results from abroad

    A critical evaluation and comparison of four manufacturing simulators using analytic hierarchy process

    In the period of continuous change in global business environment, organizations, large and small, are finding it increasingly difficult to deal with, and adjust to the demands for such change. Simulation is a powerful tool for allowing designers imagine new systems and for enabling them to both quantify and to observe behaviour. Currently the market offers a variety of simulation software packages. Some are less expensive than others. Some are generic and can be used in a wide variety of application areas while others are more specific. Some have powerful features for modelling while others provide only basic features. Modelling approaches and strategies are different for different packages. Companies are seeking advice about the desirable features of software to manufacture simulation, depending on the purpose of its use. Because of this, the importance of an adequate approach to simulation software evaluation and comparison is apparent. This paper presents a critical evaluation of four widely used manufacturing simulators: NX-IDEAS, Star-CD, Micro Saint Sharp and ProModel. Following a review of research into simulation software evaluation, an evaluation and comparison of the above simulators is performed. This paper illustrates and assesses the role the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) played in simulation software evaluation and selection. The main purpose of this evaluation and comparison is to discover the suitability of certain types of simulators for particular purposes

    A hybrid model of system dynamics and genetic algorithm to increase crude palm oil production in Malaysia

    Palm oil industry in Malaysia is facing a stagnant growth in terms of crude palm oil (CPO) production as compared to Indonesia due to three issues namely (i) the scarcity of plantation area, (ii) labour shortage, and (iii) the rising demand from palm-based biodiesel industry. Focusing on these issues, previous studies have been adopted various approaches. However, these non-hybridized methods have some shortcomings and can be improved by hybridization method. Hence, the objective of this research is to determine the optimal policy options to increase CPO production in Malaysia. In this research, a hybrid model of system dynamics (SD) and genetic algorithm (GA) was developed to determine the optimal policy in increasing the CPO production in Malaysia. Five policy variables namely mechanization adoption rate, average replanting, biodiesel mandates in transportation, industrial and 4 other relevant sectors were examined to determine optimal policy values. These five policy variables were tested in three scenarios: year 2017, year 2020, and in phases until 2050. From all the scenarios, the phase optimization emerged as the most effective in producing suitable policy variable values in order to obtain the best possible value of CPO production in year 2050 up to 20 GA population runs. The hybrid of SD-GA through phase optimization process is capable to recommend policies that are plausible to be implemented to avoid unwarranted shock to the industry. Furthermore, the hybrid model provides the ability of identifying the policy variables related to the objective function at any specific time line. From the managerial perspectives, this research helps the stakeholders in palm oil industry towards making a better future investment decision
