    The Imperative of the Metastudio

    Get PDF
The activities we engage in when we design form a broad and disparate palette. We explore, research, make marks, make artefacts, experiment, review, discuss, critique, assess. The ‘home’ of this palette of activities is ‘the studio’; a combination of laboratory, library, workshop, forum, exhibition. It became apparent a few years ago, that the nature of the central plank of the studio dialogue, the tutorial, was changing. Students were bringing a wider range of media to the tutorial to represent their developing ideas. Importantly, this included, increasingly, electronic media, typically ‘live’ CAD models on laptops. As a tutor, the importance of the internet in tutorials, to share material, images, precedent with students, was also increasing. The tutorial was enriched. But it was harder to organise, and particularly it was harder to record, to provide a cohesive log of the dialogue, the feedback, the references. Much of the feedback in tutorial is drawn, and drawn freehand, in quick and dirty, intuitive mode. It became apparent that it would be very helpful to find a way of pulling this melee of feedback and discussion together, of organising it for students and staff, but retaining the immediacy of the quick and dirty drawn discussion and freehand feedback

It can be concluded that this video is very suitable to be used as a learning medium for students in the Indonesian Bridal course in the Middle Part of the Cosmetology Study Program. &nbsp

Business Intelligence, Analytics And Data Visualization: A Heat Map Project Tutorial

    Get PDF
Business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) initiatives are helping countless organizations harness and interpret the vast amount of information available in the world today. The explosion of BI&A in industry has fueled the high demand for knowledge workers with advanced analytical skills. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a data visualization project tutorial for Information Systems (IS) education. The applied BI&A tutorial was designed to help students learn how to create and analyze a heat map using SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS). Students learn how to make decisions based on large amounts of data by presenting it in visual form. This tutorial exposes students to the decision-making power derived from data visualization. Utilizing the 5E Instructional Model, the tutorial assists in the development of BI&A professionals who can quickly make sense of mass amounts of data, identify trends buried within data sets, and are skilled in making sound decisions that add value to organizations

Effectiveness of a computer-based tutorial for teaching how to make a blood smear.

BACKGROUND: Computer-aided instruction (CAI) was developed to teach veterinary students how to make blood smears. This instruction was intended to replace the traditional instructional method in order to promote efficient use of faculty resources while maintaining learning outcomes and student satisfaction. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a computer-aided blood smear tutorial on 1) instructor\u27s teaching time, 2) students\u27 ability to make blood smears, and 3) students\u27 ability to recognize smear quality. METHODS: Three laboratory sessions for senior veterinary students were taught using traditional methods (control group) and 4 sessions were taught using the CAI tutorial (experimental group). Students in the control group received a short demonstration and lecture by the instructor at the beginning of the laboratory and then practiced making blood smears. Students in the experimental group received their instruction through the self-paced, multimedia tutorial on a laptop computer and then practiced making blood smears. Data was collected from observation, interview, survey questionnaires, and smear evaluation by students and experts using a scoring rubric. RESULTS: Students using the CAI made better smears and were better able to recognize smear quality. The average time the instructor spent in the room was not significantly different between groups, but the quality of the instructor time was improved with the experimental instruction. CONCLUSIONS: The tutorial implementation effectively provided students and instructors with a teaching and learning experience superior to the traditional method of instruction. Using CAI is a viable method of teaching students to make blood smears

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the Academic Library: A Methodology for Mapping Multiple Means of Representation in Library Tutorials

Librarians designed a biology tutorial not only to address an assignment, but also to make tutorials more accessible to students with various learning styles. The Science Librarian created the content by using aspects of the Information Literacy Standards for Science and Technology/Engineering, an informal survey of biology faculty, and assignments for the biology labs. The Instructional Design Librarian created multiple modules that engaged users through text, images, audio, and interactive tutorials. The researchers used Universal Design for Learning principles to address multiple learning styles, specifically multiple means of representation and created a mapping technique for those principles that can be applied to any library tutorial. To assess the effectiveness, students with learning disabilities completed a usability test on the tutorial

An eMath Teacher TOOL for ACTIVE LEARNING FLEURY'S ALGORITHM

    Get PDF
An eMathTeacher [Sánchez-Torrubia 2007a] is an eLearning on line self assessment tool that help students to active learning math algorithms by themselves, correcting their mistakes and providing them with clues to find the right solution. The tool presented in this paper is an example of this new concept on Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) resources and has been implemented as a Java applet and designed as an auxiliary instrument for both classroom teaching and individual practicing of Fleury’s algorithm. This tool, included within a set of eMathTeacher tools, has been designed as educational complement of Graph Algorithm active learning for first course students. Its characteristics of visualization, simplicity and interactivity, make this tutorial a great value pedagogical instrument
