    Overview and classification of coordination contracts within forward and reverse supply chains

    Among coordination mechanisms, contracts are valuable tools used in both theory and practice to coordinate various supply chains. The focus of this paper is to present an overview of contracts and a classification of coordination contracts and contracting literature in the form of classification schemes. The two criteria used for contract classification, as resulted from contracting literature, are transfer payment contractual incentives and inventory risk sharing.     In the past, research in operations management focused on single-firm analysis. Its goal was to provide managers in practice with suitable tools to improve the performance of their firm by calculating optimal inventory quantities, among others. Nowadays, business decisions are dominated by the globalization of markets and increased competition among firms. Further, more and more products reach the customer through supply chains that are composed of independent firms. Following these trends, research in operations management has shifted its focus from single-firm analysis to multi-firm analysis, in particular to improving the efficiency and performance of supply chains under decentralized control. The main characteristics of such chains are that the firms in the chain are independent actors who try to optimize their individual objectives, and that the decisions taken by a firm do also affect the performance of the other parties in the supply chain. These interactions among firms’ decisions ask for alignment and coordination of actions. Therefore, game theory, the study of situations of cooperation or conflict among heterogenous actors, is very well suited to deal with these interactions. This has been recognized by researchers in the field, since there are an ever increasing number of papers that applies tools, methods and models from game theory to supply chain problems

    E-Fulfillment and Multi-Channel Distribution – A Review

    This review addresses the specific supply chain management issues of Internet fulfillment in a multi-channel environment. It provides a systematic overview of managerial planning tasks and reviews corresponding quantitative models. In this way, we aim to enhance the understanding of multi-channel e-fulfillment and to identify gaps between relevant managerial issues and academic literature, thereby indicating directions for future research. One of the recurrent patterns in today’s e-commerce operations is the combination of ‘bricks-and-clicks’, the integration of e-fulfillment into a portfolio of multiple alternative distribution channels. From a supply chain management perspective, multi-channel distribution provides opportunities for serving different customer segments, creating synergies, and exploiting economies of scale. However, in order to successfully exploit these opportunities companies need to master novel challenges. In particular, the design of a multi-channel distribution system requires a constant trade-off between process integration and separation across multiple channels.     Mitigating the Bullwhip Effect and Enhancing Supply Chain Performance through Demand Information Sharing: An ARENA Simulation Study

    The supply chain is a network of organizations that collaborate and leverage their resources to deliver products or services to end-customers. In today's globalized and competitive market, organizations must specialize and form partnerships to gain a competitive edge. To thrive in their respective industries, organizations need to prioritize supply chain coordination, as it is integral to their business processes.   Supply chain management focuses on the collaboration of organizations within the supply chain. However, when each echelon member optimizes their goals without considering the network's impact, it leads to suboptimal performance and inefficiencies. This phenomenon is known as the Bullwhip effect, where order variability increases as it moves upstream in the supply chain. The lack of coordination, unincorporated material and information flows, and absence of ordering rules contribute to poor supply chain dynamics. To improve supply chain performance, it is crucial to align organizational activities. Previous research has proposed solutions to mitigate the Bullwhip effect, which has been a topic of intense study for many decades. This research aims to investigate the causes and mitigations of the Bullwhip effect based on existing research. Additionally, the paper utilizes ARENA simulation to examine the impact of sharing end-customer demand information. As far as we are aware, no study has been conducted to deeply simulate the bullwhip effect using the ARENA simulation. Previous studies have investigated this phenomenon, but without delving into its intricacies. The simulation results offer potential strategies to mitigate the Bullwhip effect through demand information sharing.     Quadratic Approximation of the Newsvendor Problem with Imperfect Quality

    The paper presents a newsvendor problem in a fuzzy environment by introducing product quality as a fuzzy variable, and product demand as a probability distribution in an economic and supply chain management environment. In order to determine the optimal order quantity, a methodology is developed where the solution is achieved using a fuzzy ranking method combined with a quadratic programming problem approximation. Numerical examples are provided and compared in both situations, namely fuzzy and crisp. The results of these numerical examples show that the decision maker has to order a higher quantity when product quality is a fuzzy variable. The model can be useful for real world problems when historical data are not available

    Leader-follower Game in VMI System with Limited Production Capacity Considering Wholesale and Retail Prices

    VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) is a widely used cooperative inventory policy in supply chains in which each enterprise has its autonomy in pricing. This paper discusses a leader-follower Stackelberg game in a VMI supply chain where the manufacturer, as a leader, produces a single product with a limited production capacity and delivers it at a wholesale price to multiple different retailers, as the followers, who then sell the product in dispersed and independent markets at retail prices. An algorithm is then developed to determine the equilibrium of the Stackelberg game. Finally, a numerical study is conducted to understand the influence of the Stackelberg equilibrium and market related parameters on the profits of the manufacturer and its retailers. Through the numerical example, our research demonstrates that: (a) the market related parameters have significant influence on the manufacturer’ and its retailers’ profits; (b) a retailer’s profit may not be necessarily lowered when it is charged with a higher inventory cost by the manufacturer; (c) the equilibrium of the Stackelberg equilibrium benefits the manufacturer.Stackelberg Game;Supply Chain;Vendor Managed Inventory
