An Upper Bound on Multi-hop Transmission Capacity with Dynamic Routing Selection
This paper develops upper bounds on the end-to-end transmission capacity of
multi-hop wireless networks. Potential source-destination paths are dynamically
selected from a pool of randomly located relays, from which a closed-form lower
bound on the outage probability is derived in terms of the expected number of
potential paths. This is in turn used to provide an upper bound on the number
of successful transmissions that can occur per unit area, which is known as the
transmission capacity. The upper bound results from assuming independence among
the potential paths, and can be viewed as the maximum diversity case. A useful
aspect of the upper bound is its simple form for an arbitrary-sized network,
which allows insights into how the number of hops and other network parameters
affect spatial throughput in the non-asymptotic regime. The outage probability
analysis is then extended to account for retransmissions with a maximum number
of allowed attempts. In contrast to prevailing wisdom, we show that
predetermined routing (such as nearest-neighbor) is suboptimal, since more hops
are not useful once the network is interference-limited. Our results also make
clear that randomness in the location of relay sets and dynamically varying
channel states is helpful in obtaining higher aggregate throughput, and that

Social-Aware Forwarding Improves Routing Performance in Pocket Switched Networks
Several social-aware forwarding strategies have been recently introduced in
opportunistic networks, and proved effective in considerably in- creasing
routing performance through extensive simulation studies based on real-world
data. However, this performance improvement comes at the expense of storing a
considerable amount of state information (e.g, history of past encounters) at
the nodes. Hence, whether the benefits on routing performance comes directly
from the social-aware forwarding mechanism, or indirectly by the fact state
information is exploited is not clear. Thus, the question of whether
social-aware forwarding by itself is effective in improving opportunistic
network routing performance remained unaddressed so far. In this paper, we give
a first, positive answer to the above question, by investigating the expected
message delivery time as the size of the net- work grows larger
On the Dynamics of Human Proximity for Data Diffusion in Ad-Hoc Networks
We report on a data-driven investigation aimed at understanding the dynamics
of message spreading in a real-world dynamical network of human proximity. We
use data collected by means of a proximity-sensing network of wearable sensors
that we deployed at three different social gatherings, simultaneously involving
several hundred individuals. We simulate a message spreading process over the
recorded proximity network, focusing on both the topological and the temporal
properties. We show that by using an appropriate technique to deal with the
temporal heterogeneity of proximity events, a universal statistical pattern
emerges for the delivery times of messages, robust across all the data sets.
Our results are useful to set constraints for generic processes of data
dissemination, as well as to validate established models of human mobility and

Design and analysis of a beacon-less routing protocol for large volume content dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks
Largevolumecontentdisseminationispursuedbythegrowingnumberofhighquality applications for Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks(VANETs), e.g., the live road surveillance service and the video-based overtaking assistant service. For the highly dynamical vehicular network topology, beacon-less routing protocols have been proven to be efficient in achieving a balance between the system performance and the control overhead. However, to the authors’ best knowledge, the routing design for large volume content has not been well considered in the previous work, which will introduce new challenges, e.g., the enhanced connectivity requirement for a radio link. In this paper, a link Lifetime-aware Beacon-less Routing Protocol (LBRP) is designed for large volume content delivery in VANETs. Each vehicle makes the forwarding decision based on the message header information and its current state, including the speed and position information. A semi-Markov process analytical model is proposed to evaluate the expected delay in constructing one routing path for LBRP. Simulations show that the proposed LBRP scheme outperforms the traditional dissemination protocols in providing a low end-to-end delay. The heterogeneity of inter-contact time distributions: its importance for routing in delay tolerant networks
Prior work on routing in delay tolerant networks (DTNs) has commonly made the
assumption that each pair of nodes shares the same inter-contact time
distribution as every other pair. The main argument in this paper is that
researchers should also be looking at heterogeneous inter-contact time
distributions. We demonstrate the presence of such heterogeneity in the
often-used Dartmouth Wi-Fi data set. We also show that DTN routing can benefit
from knowing these distributions. We first introduce a new stochastic model
focusing on the inter-contact time distributions between all pairs of nodes,
which we validate on real connectivity patterns. We then analytically derive
the mean delivery time for a bundle of information traversing the network for
simple single copy routing schemes. The purpose is to examine the theoretic
impact of heterogeneous inter-contact time distributions. Finally, we show that
we can exploit this user diversity to improve routing performance.Comment: 6 page
