    Integrated optimization of sustainable supply chains and transportation networks for multi technology bio-based production:A decision support system based on fuzzy ε-constraint method

    Developing and employing effective design methodologies can significantly improve the economic and environmental viability of renewable production processes. This study contributes by presenting a novel bi-level decision support system (DSS) to aid modelling and optimization of multi technology, multi product supply chains and co-modal transportation networks for biomass based (bio-based) production combining two multi-objective mathematical models. Considering the supply chain configuration optimized by the first level of the DSS, in the second level, the transportation network is designed specifying the most appropriate transportation mode and related transportation option under transfer station availability limitations. A hybrid solution methodology that integrates fuzzy set theory and ε-constraint method is proposed. This methodology handles the system specific uncertainties addressing the economic and environmental sustainability aspects by capturing trade-offs between conflicting objectives in the same framework. To explore the viability of the proposed models and solution methodology, a regional supply chain and transportation network is designed using the entire West Midlands (WM) region of the UK as a testing ground. Additionally, scenario and sensitivity analyses are conducted to provide further insights into design and optimization of the biomass based supply chains

    Applications of Genetic Algorithm and Its Variants in Rail Vehicle Systems: A Bibliometric Analysis and Comprehensive Review

    Railway systems are time-varying and complex systems with nonlinear behaviors that require effective optimization techniques to achieve optimal performance. Evolutionary algorithms methods have emerged as a popular optimization technique in recent years due to their ability to handle complex, multi-objective issues of such systems. In this context, genetic algorithm (GA) as one of the powerful optimization techniques has been extensively used in the railway sector, and applied to various problems such as scheduling, routing, forecasting, design, maintenance, and allocation. This paper presents a review of the applications of GAs and their variants in the railway domain together with bibliometric analysis. The paper covers highly cited and recent studies that have employed GAs in the railway sector and discuss the challenges and opportunities of using GAs in railway optimization problems. Meanwhile, the most popular hybrid GAs as the combination of GA and other evolutionary algorithms methods such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), neural network (NN), fuzzy-logic control, etc with their dedicated application in the railway domain are discussed too. More than 250 publications are listed and classified to provide a comprehensive analysis and road map for experts and researchers in the field helping them to identify research gaps and opportunities

    The sustainable home health care process based on multi-criteria decision-dupport

    The increase in life expectancy has led to a growing demand for Home Health Care (HHC) services. However, some problems can arise in the management of these services, leading to high computational complexity and time-consuming to obtain an exact and/or optimal solution. This study intends to contribute to an automatic multi-criteria decision-support system that allows the optimization of several objective functions simultaneously, which are often conflicting, such as costs related to travel (distance and/or time) and available resources (health professionals and vehicles) to visit the patients. In this work, the HHC scheduling and routing problem is formulated as a multi objective approach, aiming to minimize the travel distance, the travel time and the number of vehicles, taking into account specific constraints, such as the needs of patients, allocation variables, the health professionals and the transport availability. Thus, the multi-objective genetic algorithm, based on the NSGA-II, is applied to a real-world problem of HHC visits from a Health Unit in Bragança (Portugal), to identify and examine the different compromises between the objectives using a Pareto-based approach to operational planning. Moreover, this work provides several efficient end-user solutions, which were standardized and evaluated in terms of the proposed policy and compared with current practice.     The present paper provides a brief introduction to a holistic approach to ship design optimization, defines the generic ship design optimization problem, and demonstrates its solution by using advanced optimization techniques for the computer-aided generation, exploration, and selection of optimal designs. It discusses proposed methods on the basis of some typical ship design optimization problems of cargo and naval ships related to multiple objectives, leading to improved and partly innovative design features with respect to ships’ economy, cargo carrying capacity, safety, survivability, comfort, required powering, environmental protection, or combat strength, as applicable.Este documento brinda una breve introducción a un enfoque holístico a la optimización del diseño de embarcaciones, define el problema genérico de la optimización del diseño de embarcaciones y demuestra su solución mediante el uso de técnicas avanzadas de optimización asistidas por computador para la generación, exploración y selección de diseños óptimos.
