    The development of a methodology for the evaluation of installed CAPM system’s effectiveness and efficiency

    The objective of this work was to design, develop and evaluate an audit for a Computer Aided Production Management (CAPM) system. Such systems, despite their costs of purchase and implementation, find wide application in industry but there is still considerable debate as to their contribution to the overall performance of a company. A variety of possible methodologies were explored. However, it was found that most of the existing analytical techniques tended to focus on a comparison of systems with respect to best practice or to require data that a company was unlikely to have. Best practice is not an absolute measure, nor does it take account of different company types and their individual requirements. A flexible methodology, 'the CAPM Audit', designed to establish the effectiveness and efficiency of any installed CAPM system, has been developed. The audit is a development of the Delphi approach and is designed to establish the contribution of the CAPM system to the company's overall competitive position. In its development, a generic model for any CAPM system was devised to facilitate analysis without reference to any particular technology, management mode, or manufacturing control system. The audit developed (in the form of a workbook) consists of four stages: stage one establishes the context; stage two determines the underlying architecture of the system; stage three quantifies the contribution to the company's competitive position; and stage four identifies the causes of any failure of the CAPM system. The design of the audit is such that: it enables a systematic investigation of the effectiveness and efficiency of an installed CAPM system to be completed; it enables the CAPM system's contribution to the company to be identified; and it also enables any inadequacies to be determined

    Towards adaptive multi-robot systems: self-organization and self-adaptation

The reason for this is that system designers are not able to fully specify the system during specification and development and before it is being deployed. Natural swarm systems enjoy similar characteristics, yet, being self-adaptive and being able to self-organize, these systems show beneficial emergent behaviour. Similar concepts can be extremely helpful for artificial systems, especially when it comes to multi-robot scenarios, which require such solution in order to be applicable to highly uncertain real world application. In this article, we present a comprehensive overview over state-of-the-art solutions in emergent systems, self-organization, self-adaptation, and robotics. We discuss these approaches in the light of a framework for multi-robot systems and identify similarities, differences missing links and open gaps that have to be addressed in order to make this framework possible

    A Planning Template for Nonwork Travel and Transit Oriented Development, MTI Report 01-12

    The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) at San José State University assigned a project team to design a planning template for transit-oriented development (TOD) that incorporates an understanding of nonwork travel, that is, trips for shopping, eating out, and engaging in recreational and cultural activities. Nonwork trips are growing in signifigance and now account for four of every five trips. At the same time, TOD has become a popular planning response to the impacts of metropolitan growth. Some planners believe that TOD will induce more pedestrian and transit trips and will reduce the average length and frequency of household auto travel. This effect is assumed to result from improved accessibility to employment and nonwork venues located in compact, mixed-use centers. Planning professionals in many MPOs also suggest that if multiple centers are linked by high quality transit, such as light or heavy rail, access is enabled to the broad range of nonwork activities. The project arrived at these essential findings: (1) Venues for nonwork activities are very numerous and geographically dispersed. 2) The spatial environment for nonwork activities is the result of growing prosperity, technical innovation, and a dynamic, competitive marketplace. (3) The consumer marketplace will provide many more places to go than mass transit can cost-effectively serve. (4) Current metropolitan planning methods and modeling tools focus on the work trip and do not adequately account for the complexity of nonwork trips and their linkage to work trips. These findings support the need for a new regional planning process to complement current methods. One recommended approach is that metropolitan communities establish a Nonwork Travel Improvement Planning Process using a multidisciplinary expert advisory group interacting with a core, Internet-enabled, professional transportation planning staff. An iterative interaction across varied but relevant skill sets could be achieved through a Backcasting Delphi process. The focus of the interaction would be on understanding the ramifications of consumer and retail industry behavior for TOD and other new transportation strategies, and then assessing the available strategies for cost-effectiveness in reducing the impacts of growth and automobility in a complex and uncertain metropolitan market

    In this paper, we focus on the results of the Belgian Trend Study. The intention of this study was to examine the prevalence of new production concepts within the widest possible range of companies in the automobile, the machine-tool, the chemical and the clothing industries. The Trend Study aimed to answer the following questions : is the Taylorist division of labour a thing of the past ? What are the alternatives ? Are shifts in the division of labour accompanied by another type of personnel policy, and do traditional relations have to make way for this new approach ? The methodological concept used had to guarantee that the findings at the level of each industry could be generalized. Though the picture emerging from the empirical data collected in the four industrial sectors is inevitably diverse, the data make it possible merely to suggest a 'neo' rather than a 'post' Taylorist or Fordist concept.

The volume is organized in three parts according to the last research works in assembly line subject. The first part of the book is devoted to the assembly line balancing problem. It includes chapters dealing with different problems of ALBP. In the second part of the book some optimization problems in assembly line structure are considered. In many situations there are several contradictory goals that have to be satisfied simultaneously. The third part of the book deals with testing problems in assembly line.
