Predicting Software Defects Based on Cognitive Error Theories
As the primary cause of software defects, human error is the key to understanding and perhaps to predicting and preventing software defects. However, little research has been done to forecast software defects based on defects' cognitive nature. This paper proposes an idea for predicting software defects by applying the current scientific understanding of human error mechanisms. This new prediction method is based on the main causal mechanism underlying software defects: an error-prone scenario triggers a sequence of human error modes. Preliminary evidence for supporting this idea is presented
Classification and reduction of pilot error
Human error is a primary or contributing factor in about two-thirds of commercial aviation accidents worldwide. With the ultimate goal of reducing pilot error accidents, this contract effort is aimed at understanding the factors underlying error events and reducing the probability of certain types of errors by modifying underlying factors such as flight deck design and procedures. A review of the literature relevant to error classification was conducted. Classification includes categorizing types of errors, the information processing mechanisms and factors underlying them, and identifying factor-mechanism-error relationships. The classification scheme developed by Jens Rasmussen was adopted because it provided a comprehensive yet basic error classification shell or structure that could easily accommodate addition of details on domain-specific factors. For these purposes, factors specific to the aviation environment were incorporated. Hypotheses concerning the relationship of a small number of underlying factors, information processing mechanisms, and error types types identified in the classification scheme were formulated. ASRS data were reviewed and a simulation experiment was performed to evaluate and quantify the hypotheses
The Internet-of-Things Meets Business Process Management: Mutual Benefits and Challenges
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a network of connected devices
collecting and exchanging data over the Internet. These things can be
artificial or natural, and interact as autonomous agents forming a complex
system. In turn, Business Process Management (BPM) was established to analyze,
discover, design, implement, execute, monitor and evolve collaborative business
processes within and across organizations. While the IoT and BPM have been
regarded as separate topics in research and practice, we strongly believe that
the management of IoT applications will strongly benefit from BPM concepts,
methods and technologies on the one hand; on the other one, the IoT poses
challenges that will require enhancements and extensions of the current
state-of-the-art in the BPM field. In this paper, we question to what extent
these two paradigms can be combined and we discuss the emerging challenges
The achievement of spacecraft autonomy through the thematic application of multiple cooperating intelligent agents
A description is given of UNICORN, a prototype system developed for the purpose of investigating artificial intelligence (AI) concepts supporting spacecraft autonomy. UNICORN employs thematic reasoning, of the type first described by Rodger Schank of Northwestern University, to allow the context-sensitive control of multiple intelligent agents within a blackboard based environment. In its domain of application, UNICORN demonstrates the ability to reason teleologically with focused knowledge. Also presented are some of the lessons learned as a result of this effort. These lessons apply to any effort wherein system level autonomy is the objective

Approaches to conceptual clustering
Methods for Conceptual Clustering may be explicated in two lights. Conceptual Clustering methods may be viewed as extensions to techniques of numerical taxonomy, a collection of methods developed by social and natural scientists for creating classification schemes over object sets. Alternatively, conceptual clustering may be viewed as a form of learning by observation or concept formation, as opposed to methods of learning from examples or concept identification. In this paper we survey and compare a number of conceptual clustering methods along dimensions suggested by each of these views. The point we most wish to clarify is that conceptual clustering processes can be explicated as being composed of three distinct but inter-dependent subprocesses: the process of deriving a hierarchical classification scheme; the process of aggregating objects into individual classes; and the process of assigning conceptual descriptions to object classes. Each subprocess may be characterized along a number of dimensions related to search, thus facilitating a better understanding of the conceptual clustering process as a whole
