The Mediating Effects of Psychological Contract on Human Resource Practices and Employee Retention Relationship: An Employer-Employee Perspective.

    Get PDF
The importance of retaining employees is emphasized by the negative outcomes of employee turnover such as the costs in finding a replacement, as well as the valuable knowledge, skills and connections that employee has. The psychological contract plays a crucial role as a framework in understanding the fundamentals of the employee-employer relationship, as it deals with the fulfilment of obligations and promises an organization has made to the employee, and vice versa. With the use of the psychological contract in employee retention, the gaps between what is promised and the extent of how the promises are met can be determined. Based on these gaps, employers can strategize employee retention practices accordingly. In this thesis, practices of the organization (HR practices) are used as contents of the psychological contract of which its importance to the employees and the extent of its fulfilment (psychological contract) is identified, which would result in employee retention. A crosssectional study using survey questionnaires were distributed to organizations within the Event Management industry. These organizations are those registered under the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) where 50 employee-employer dyads returned the completed questionnaires. The data obtained were then analysed using descriptive, correlational, independent samples t-tests, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between the variables of this study. This research found that there is a positive significant relationship between HR practice and psychological contract fulfilment (Employee: β = 0.355, p-value 0.05). However, there was a significant difference between employee and employer regarding the psychological contract (p = 0.00) and employee retention (p = 0.013). These findings contribute to the HRM domain and offers a valuable connection between HR practices and the psychological contract, and also the link between psychological contract and social exchange theory. Additionally, matched data of employee and employer provides valuable and corresponding information regarding the perceptions of the psychological contract

Redefining Disproportionate Arrest Rates: An Exploratory Quasi-Experiment that Reassesses the Role of Skin Tone

    Get PDF
The New York Times reported that Black Lives Matter was the third most-read subject of 2020. These articles brought to the forefront the question of disparity in arrest rates for darker-skinned people. Questioning arrest disparity is understandable because virtually everything known about disproportionate arrest rates has been a guess, and virtually all prior research on disproportionate arrest rates is questionable because of improper benchmarking (the denominator effect). Current research has highlighted the need to switch from demographic data to skin tone data and start over on disproportionate arrest rate research; therefore, this study explored the relationship between skin tone and disproportionate arrest rates. This study also sought to determine which of the three theories surrounding disproportionate arrests is most predictive of disproportionate rates. The current theories are that disproportionate arrests increase as skin tone gets darker (stereotype threat theory), disproportionate rates are different for Black and Brown people (self-categorization theory), or disproportionate rates apply equally across all darker skin colors (social dominance theory). This study used a quantitative exploratory quasi-experimental design using linear spline regression to analyze arrest rates in Alachua County, Florida, before and after the county’s mandate to reduce arrests as much as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect the prison population. The study was exploratory as no previous study has used skin tone analysis to examine arrest disparity. The findings of this study redefines the understanding of the existence and nature of disparities in arrest rates and offer a solid foundation for additional studies about the relationship between disproportionate arrest rates and skin color

Climate Change and Critical Agrarian Studies

Climate change is perhaps the greatest threat to humanity today and plays out as a cruel engine of myriad forms of injustice, violence and destruction. The effects of climate change from human-made emissions of greenhouse gases are devastating and accelerating; yet are uncertain and uneven both in terms of geography and socio-economic impacts. Emerging from the dynamics of capitalism since the industrial revolution — as well as industrialisation under state-led socialism — the consequences of climate change are especially profound for the countryside and its inhabitants. The book interrogates the narratives and strategies that frame climate change and examines the institutionalised responses in agrarian settings, highlighting what exclusions and inclusions result. It explores how different people — in relation to class and other co-constituted axes of social difference such as gender, race, ethnicity, age and occupation — are affected by climate change, as well as the climate adaptation and mitigation responses being implemented in rural areas. The book in turn explores how climate change – and the responses to it - affect processes of social differentiation, trajectories of accumulation and in turn agrarian politics. Finally, the book examines what strategies are required to confront climate change, and the underlying political-economic dynamics that cause it, reflecting on what this means for agrarian struggles across the world. The 26 chapters in this volume explore how the relationship between capitalism and climate change plays out in the rural world and, in particular, the way agrarian struggles connect with the huge challenge of climate change. Through a huge variety of case studies alongside more conceptual chapters, the book makes the often-missing connection between climate change and critical agrarian studies. The book argues that making the connection between climate and agrarian justice is crucial

A Critical Review Of Post-Secondary Education Writing During A 21st Century Education Revolution

    Get PDF
Educational materials are effective instruments which provide information and report new discoveries uncovered by researchers in specific areas of academia. Higher education, like other education institutions, rely on instructional materials to inform its practice of educating adult learners. In post-secondary education, developmental English programs are tasked with meeting the needs of dynamic populations, thus there is a continuous need for research in this area to support its changing landscape. However, the majority of scholarly thought in this area centers on K-12 reading and writing. This paucity presents a phenomenon to the post-secondary community. This research study uses a qualitative content analysis to examine peer-reviewed journals from 2003-2017, developmental online websites, and a government issued document directed toward reforming post-secondary developmental education programs. These highly relevant sources aid educators in discovering informational support to apply best practices for student success. Developmental education serves the purpose of addressing literacy gaps for students transitioning to college-level work. The findings here illuminate the dearth of material offered to developmental educators. This study suggests the field of literacy research is fragmented and highlights an apparent blind spot in scholarly literature with regard to English writing instruction. This poses a quandary for post-secondary literacy researchers in the 21st century and establishes the necessity for the literacy research community to commit future scholarship toward equipping college educators teaching writing instruction to underprepared adult learners

The influence of CEO leadership on organizational learning in internationalizing high-tech companies in China

    Get PDF
This research explores how CEO leadership affects the learning process of internationalizing high-tech companies. There has been a growing recognition of the role of leadership in the international learning process. For example, scholars have discussed the influence of several factors, such as leaders’ cognition, decision-making style, and entrepreneurship, on international learning process. Moreover, CEO leadership has been treated as an important factor that can affect a company’s organizational learning. However, very few studies have discussed the role of leadership in the organizational learning process of companies’ internationalization. Based on a review of existing research gaps in the role of leadership in organizational and international learning literature, this research seeks to gain rich insights into how leadership influences organizational learning in high-tech companies’ internationalizing in the Chinese context. This research focused on two common leadership styles in China, authoritarian leadership and empowering leadership. These two leadership styles can be explained through Chinese traditional philosophy and from the lens of power, authoritarian leadership and empowering leadership are deserved to be compared. This research adopts a qualitative approach based on 8 case studies of Chinese high-tech internationalizing companies. Semi-structured interviews with the CEO and at least two senior managers were carried out in each case. This research contributes to international learning process literature. CEO leadership is proposed as a key factor that can influence each construct associated with the international learning process and cause different international learning processes. This research also contributes to both leadership and internationalization literature as it uses organizational learning as a bridge linking leadership and internationalization. Different leadership styles could cause different internationalization outcomes in performance and management perspectives due to different international learning processes. Moreover, CEO leadership could be changed during companies’ internationalization process

THE IMPACT OF MIDTERM COLLEGE MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE ON RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF STEM STUDENTS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study sought to examine how midterm math performance can impact a student’s final math performance, STEM performance, overall performance, as well as retention and graduation with a STEM major. The sample consisted of 283 first-time full-time undergraduate students who were admitted in Fall 2014 as STEM majors within a liberal arts and sciences college at a private, not-for-profit, urban, highly diverse university located in the northeast. Academic record data from between September 2014 – May 2020 was obtained. Multiple and logistic regression analyses were performed, as well as independent samples t-tests. Results of the study revealed that while midterm math performance was not a direct predictor of retention and graduation when taking all college performance variables into account, it could be considered as an indirect predictor due to its positive relationship with cumulative GPA, where increasing cumulative GPA increased a student’s chance of being retained and graduated as STEM. Similar results were found in relation to final math performance and STEM GPA. Furthermore, it was found that students who graduated in STEM had, on average, higher midterm and final math GPAs compared to students who leave or change their major out of STEM. This study also revealed the importance of not only looking at the retention into the second year but also retention into the third year, where underrepresented minorities in STEM had a substantial attrition rate during this transition. The need for STEM graduates continues to be a priority and this study will add to the literature on how institutions can target formerly well-performing high school students but begin to perform poorly once matriculated as early as possible

Charles Spurgeon and a Biblical View of Wealth

    Get PDF
Charles Spurgeon preached wealth as a spiritual commodity based on his Christological exposition which countered the preaching of wealth as a divine right. Some people have come to view earthly wealth as a substance that comes as a result of obedience to God. There are also a number of people that believe that any biblical theology pertaining to wealth is amendable and see no lasting truth in the text. Spurgeon critiques these approaches. He saw earthly wealth primarily as a spiritual commodity and believed it to be a substance that should be utilized for the purpose of bringing glory to God. The researcher will present a study of what the Bible teaches with regards to wealth as perceived by Spurgeon by applying biblical theological categories and an analysis of wealth from its inception until the present day

Text in English with abstracts and keywords in English, isiXhosa, and isiZuluThe principal focus of this research study was to investigate the relationship among psychosocial career pre-occupation, social connectedness, and organisational commitment, and to determine whether an overall proactive career management profile can be constructed to inform career self-management practices in public higher education institutions (HEIs) in Ghana. Again, the research study intended to provide a background for testing hypotheses and theories as well as moderating the effect of socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, marital status and job level) on the relationship between psychosocial career pre-occupations, social connectedness and organisational commitment. A cross-sectional quantitative approach was conducted on a purposively selected sample of senior staff comprising academic and administrative staff (n = 288), from a single public higher educational institution in Ghana. The measuring instruments include a career pre-occupations inventory workplace friendship scale and an organisational commitment scale. Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis), bi-variate correlation analysis (Pearson product moment correlation coefficient), and inferential and multivariate statistics (SEM analysis, moderated regression analysis, ANOVAs and independent sample t-test) were used for the study. Descriptive, bi-variate correlation and inferential statistics revealed that individual psychosocial career pre-occupations, social connectedness and organisational commitment can be used as elements within a proactive career self-management framework within the Ghanaian higher education institutions. The results of the moderated analysis showed that respondents’ gender and job level moderated employees’ level of psychosocial career pre-occupations in predicting organisational commitment. Furthermore, the test for significant mean differences revealed that gender, marital status and job level differed marginally in their psychosocial career pre-occupations, social connectedness and commitment to the organisation. Theoretically and empirically, the results advanced the career construction theory by empirically validating the core elements of career self-management. Practically, a recommendation was made to inform human resource (HR) managers and HR practitioners in public higher education institutions in Ghana and the consequences indicated in the study offer the opportunity to monitor and provide strategies and interventions for employees in their quest for career choices.Ugqaliselo oluphambili kolu phononongo lophando yayikukuphanda ubudlelwane phakathi komsebenzi wangaphambi kwekhondo ngokwesimo sengqondo nangokwezentlalo (psychosocial career pre-occupation), ukuziphatha, nokunxulumana kwezinto zokuziphatha nezentlalo (social connectedness), kunye nokuzibophelela kulungelelaniso /kucwangciso lombutho (organisational commitment), nokuqonda ukuba ingaba iprofayili yeendlela zokulawula ikhondo elisebenzayo elipheleleyo inokwakhelwa ukwazisa izenzo zekhondo lomsebenzi lokuzilawula kumaziko emfundo ephakamileyo karhulumente/oluntu (HEIs) eGhana.
