International conference on software engineering and knowledge engineering: Session chair
The Thirtieth International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering (SEKE 2018) will be held at the Hotel Pullman, San Francisco Bay, USA, from July 1 to July 3, 2018. SEKE2018 will also be dedicated in memory of Professor Lofti Zadeh, a great scholar, pioneer and leader in fuzzy sets theory and soft computing.
The conference aims at bringing together experts in software engineering and knowledge engineering to discuss on relevant results in either software engineering or knowledge engineering or both. Special emphasis will be put on the transference of methods between both domains. The theme this year is soft computing in software engineering & knowledge engineering. Submission of papers and demos are both welcome
RIDDLE: Race and ethnicity Imputation from Disease history with Deep LEarning
Anonymized electronic medical records are an increasingly popular source of
research data. However, these datasets often lack race and ethnicity
information. This creates problems for researchers modeling human disease, as
race and ethnicity are powerful confounders for many health exposures and
treatment outcomes; race and ethnicity are closely linked to
population-specific genetic variation. We showed that deep neural networks
generate more accurate estimates for missing racial and ethnic information than
competing methods (e.g., logistic regression, random forest). RIDDLE yielded
significantly better classification performance across all metrics that were
considered: accuracy, cross-entropy loss (error), and area under the curve for
receiver operating characteristic plots (all ). We made specific
efforts to interpret the trained neural network models to identify, quantify,
and visualize medical features which are predictive of race and ethnicity. We
used these characterizations of informative features to perform a systematic
comparison of differential disease patterns by race and ethnicity. The fact
that clinical histories are informative for imputing race and ethnicity could
reflect (1) a skewed distribution of blue- and white-collar professions across
racial and ethnic groups, (2) uneven accessibility and subjective importance of
prophylactic health, (3) possible variation in lifestyle, such as dietary
habits, and (4) differences in background genetic variation which predispose to
diseases
SCADA System Testbed for Cybersecurity Research Using Machine Learning Approach
This paper presents the development of a Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA) system testbed used for cybersecurity research. The testbed
consists of a water storage tank's control system, which is a stage in the
process of water treatment and distribution. Sophisticated cyber-attacks were
conducted against the testbed. During the attacks, the network traffic was
captured, and features were extracted from the traffic to build a dataset for
training and testing different machine learning algorithms. Five traditional
machine learning algorithms were trained to detect the attacks: Random Forest,
Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes and KNN. Then, the trained
machine learning models were built and deployed in the network, where new tests
were made using online network traffic. The performance obtained during the
training and testing of the machine learning models was compared to the
performance obtained during the online deployment of these models in the
network. The results show the efficiency of the machine learning models in
detecting the attacks in real time. The testbed provides a good understanding

Psychometrics in Practice at RCEC
A broad range of topics is dealt with in this volume: from combining the psychometric generalizability and item response theories to the ideas for an integrated formative use of data-driven decision making, assessment for learning and diagnostic testing. A number of chapters pay attention to computerized (adaptive) and classification testing. Other chapters treat the quality of testing in a general sense, but for topics like maintaining standards or the testing of writing ability, the quality of testing is dealt with more specifically.\ud
All authors are connected to RCEC as researchers. They present one of their current research topics and provide some insight into the focus of RCEC. The selection of the topics and the editing intends that the book should be of special interest to educational researchers, psychometricians and practitioners in educational assessment
