Simulation Platform for Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Impulse Radio Ultra Wide Band
Impulse Radio Ultra Wide Band (IR-UWB) is a promising technology to address
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) constraints. However, existing network simulation
tools do not provide a complete WSN simulation architecture, with the IR-UWB
specificities at the PHYsical (PHY) and the Medium Access Control (MAC) layers.
In this paper, we propose a WSN simulation architecture based on the IR-UWB
technique. At the PHY layer, we take into account the pulse collision by
dealing with the pulse propagation delay. We also modelled MAC protocols
specific to IRUWB, for WSN applications. To completely fit the WSN simulation
requirements, we propose a generic and reusable sensor and sensing channel
model. Most of the WSN application performances can be evaluated thanks to the
proposed simulation architecture. The proposed models are implemented on a
scalable and well known network simulator: Global Mobile Information System
Simulator (GloMoSim). However, they can be reused for all other packet based
simulation platforms
IR-UWB Detection and Fusion Strategies using Multiple Detector Types
Optimal detection of ultra wideband (UWB) pulses in a UWB transceiver
employing multiple detector types is proposed and analyzed in this paper. We
propose several fusion techniques for fusing decisions made by individual
IR-UWB detectors. We assess the performance of these fusion techniques for
commonly used detector types like matched filter, energy detector and amplitude
detector. In order to perform this, we derive the detection performance
equation for each of the detectors in terms of false alarm rate, shape of the
pulse and number of UWB pulses used in the detection and apply these in the
fusion algorithms. We show that the performance can be improved approximately
by 4 dB in terms of signal to noise ratio (SNR) for perfect detectability of a
UWB signal in a practical scenario by fusing the decisions from individual

Experimental evaluation of UWB indoor positioning for indoor track cycling
Accurate radio frequency (RF)-based indoor localization systems are more and more applied during sports. The most accurate RF-based localization systems use ultra-wideband (UWB) technology; this is why this technology is the most prevalent. UWB positioning systems allow for an in-depth analysis of the performance of athletes during training and competition. There is no research available that investigates the feasibility of UWB technology for indoor track cycling. In this paper, we investigate the optimal position to mount the UWB hardware for that specific use case. Different positions on the bicycle and cyclist were evaluated based on accuracy, received power level, line-of-sight, maximum communication range, and comfort. Next to this, the energy consumption of our UWB system was evaluated. We found that the optimal hardware position was the lower back, with a median ranging error of 22 cm (infrastructure hardware placed at 2.3 m). The energy consumption of our UWB system is also taken into account. Applied to our setup with the hardware mounted at the lower back, the maximum communication range varies between 32.6 m and 43.8 m. This shows that UWB localization systems are suitable for indoor positioning of track cyclists
Target Tracking in Confined Environments with Uncertain Sensor Positions
To ensure safety in confined environments such as mines or subway tunnels, a
(wireless) sensor network can be deployed to monitor various environmental
conditions. One of its most important applications is to track personnel,
mobile equipment and vehicles. However, the state-of-the-art algorithms assume
that the positions of the sensors are perfectly known, which is not necessarily
true due to imprecise placement and/or dropping of sensors. Therefore, we
propose an automatic approach for simultaneous refinement of sensors' positions
and target tracking. We divide the considered area in a finite number of cells,
define dynamic and measurement models, and apply a discrete variant of belief
propagation which can efficiently solve this high-dimensional problem, and
handle all non-Gaussian uncertainties expected in this kind of environments.
Finally, we use ray-tracing simulation to generate an artificial mine-like
environment and generate synthetic measurement data. According to our extensive
simulation study, the proposed approach performs significantly better than
standard Bayesian target tracking and localization algorithms, and provides

Energy Detection UWB Receiver Design using a Multi-resolution VHDL-AMS Description
Ultra Wide Band (UWB) impulse radio systems are appealing for location-aware applications. There is a growing interest in the design of UWB transceivers with reduced complexity and power consumption. Non-coherent approaches for the design of the receiver based on energy detection schemes seem suitable to this aim and have been adopted in the project the preliminary results of which are reported in this paper. The objective is the design of a UWB receiver with a top-down methodology, starting from Matlab-like models and refining the description down to the final transistor level. This goal will be achieved with an integrated use of VHDL for the digital blocks and VHDL-AMS for the mixed-signal and analog circuits. Coherent results are obtained using VHDL-AMS and Matlab. However, the CPU time cost strongly depends on the description used in the VHDL-AMS models. In order to show the functionality of the UWB architecture, the receiver most critical functions are simulated showing results in good agreement with the expectations
