A survey of traditional and deep learning-based feature descriptors for high dimensional data in computer vision
Higher dimensional data such as video and 3D are the leading edge of multimedia retrieval and computer vision research. In this survey, we give a comprehensive overview and key insights into the state of the art of higher dimensional features from deep learning and also traditional approaches. Current approaches are frequently using 3D information from the sensor or are using 3D in modeling and understanding the 3D world. With the growth of prevalent application areas such as 3D games, self-driving automobiles, health monitoring and sports activity training, a wide variety of new sensors have allowed researchers to develop feature description models beyond 2D. Although higher dimensional data enhance the performance of methods on numerous tasks, they can also introduce new challenges and problems. The higher dimensionality of the data often leads to more complicated structures which present additional problems in both extracting meaningful content and in adapting it for current machine learning algorithms. Due to the major importance of the evaluation process, we also present an overview of the current datasets and benchmarks. Moreover, based on more than 330 papers from this study, we present the major challenges and future directions. Computer Systems, Imagery and Medi
Place recognition: An Overview of Vision Perspective
Place recognition is one of the most fundamental topics in computer vision
and robotics communities, where the task is to accurately and efficiently
recognize the location of a given query image. Despite years of wisdom
accumulated in this field, place recognition still remains an open problem due
to the various ways in which the appearance of real-world places may differ.
This paper presents an overview of the place recognition literature. Since
condition invariant and viewpoint invariant features are essential factors to
long-term robust visual place recognition system, We start with traditional
image description methodology developed in the past, which exploit techniques
from image retrieval field. Recently, the rapid advances of related fields such
as object detection and image classification have inspired a new technique to
improve visual place recognition system, i.e., convolutional neural networks
(CNNs). Thus we then introduce recent progress of visual place recognition
system based on CNNs to automatically learn better image representations for
places. Eventually, we close with discussions and future work of place
recognition.Comment: Applied Sciences (2018
Evaluating color texture descriptors under large variations of controlled lighting conditions
The recognition of color texture under varying lighting conditions is still
an open issue. Several features have been proposed for this purpose, ranging
from traditional statistical descriptors to features extracted with neural
networks. Still, it is not completely clear under what circumstances a feature
performs better than the others. In this paper we report an extensive
comparison of old and new texture features, with and without a color
normalization step, with a particular focus on how they are affected by small
and large variation in the lighting conditions. The evaluation is performed on
a new texture database including 68 samples of raw food acquired under 46
conditions that present single and combined variations of light color,
direction and intensity. The database allows to systematically investigate the
robustness of texture descriptors across a large range of variations of imaging
conditions.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of the Optical Society of America
Forecasting with time series imaging
Feature-based time series representations have attracted substantial
attention in a wide range of time series analysis methods. Recently, the use of
time series features for forecast model averaging has been an emerging research
focus in the forecasting community. Nonetheless, most of the existing
approaches depend on the manual choice of an appropriate set of features.
Exploiting machine learning methods to extract features from time series
automatically becomes crucial in state-of-the-art time series analysis. In this
paper, we introduce an automated approach to extract time series features based
on time series imaging. We first transform time series into recurrence plots,
from which local features can be extracted using computer vision algorithms.
The extracted features are used for forecast model averaging. Our experiments
show that forecasting based on automatically extracted features, with less
human intervention and a more comprehensive view of the raw time series data,
yields highly comparable performances with the best methods in the largest
forecasting competition dataset (M4) and outperforms the top methods in the
Tourism forecasting competition dataset
