    Supplier Choice: Market Selection under Uncertainty.

    Suppliers and Manufacturers generally have some say in which subset of all possible demand they will meet. In some cases that choice is implicit through pricing decisions and feature selection. Other times it is made explicitly by choosing only specific regions to stock a product in. This thesis includes models using both approaches and incorporates random demands. We present several methods for choosing a subset of all candidate customers given uncertain demands. In this thesis we consider four models of demand selection. The first two research problems consider market selection, which has been studied in the literature. The Selective Newsvendor Problem (SNP) looks at a decision maker choosing a subset of candidate markets to serve, and then receiving revenues and paying newsvendor-type costs based on the selected collection. In this thesis we consider a generalization with normally distributed demands which includes a multi-period problem as a special case and develop both exact and heuristic algorithms to solve it. When demands are not normally distributed, the problem is considerably more complex and is in general NP-hard. We develop an approximation algorithm using sample average approximation and a rounding approach to efficiently solve the problem. In addition to the work on market selection, we propose two other models for demand selection. We study auctions as a tool for a supplier with a fixed capacity to allocate the limited supply to retailers with newsvendor-type costs. Finally, we present a model for a supplier who must ensure demand is met in all markets, but has the option to work with subsidiary suppliers to meet that demand.PhDIndustrial and Operations EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Effective Multi-echelon Inventory Systems for Supplier Selection and Order Allocation

    Successful supply chain management requires an effective sourcing strategy to counteract uncertainties in both the suppliers and demands. Therefore, determining a better sourcing policy is critical in most of industries. Supplier selection is an essential task within the sourcing strategy. A well-selected set of suppliers makes a strategic difference to an organization\u27s ability to reduce costs and improve the quality of its end products. To discover the cost structure of selecting a supplier, it is more interesting to further determine appropriate levels of inventory in each echelon for different suppliers. This dissertation focuses on the study of the integrated supplier selection, order allocation and inventory control problems in a multi-echelon supply chain. First, we investigate a non-order-splitting inventory system in supply chain management. In particular, a buyer firm that consists of one warehouse and N identical retailers procures a type of product from a group of potential suppliers, which may have different prices, ordering costs, lead times and have restriction on minimum and maximum total order size, to satisfy stochastic demand. A continuous review system that implements the order quantity, reorder point (Q, R) inventory policy is considered in the proposed model. The model is solved by decomposing the mixed integer nonlinear programming model into two sub-models. Numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the model and some managerial insights are obtained with sensitivity analysis. In the next place, we extend the study to consider the multi-echelon system with the order-splitting policy. In particular, the warehouse acquisition takes place when the inventory level depletes to a reorder point R, and the order Q is simultaneously split among m selected suppliers. This consideration is important since it could pool lead time risks by splitting replenishment orders among multiple suppliers simultaneously. We develop an exact analysis for the order-splitting model in the multi-echelon system, and formulate the problem in a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) model. To demonstrate the solvability and the effectiveness of the model, we conduct several numerical analyses, and further conduct simulation models to verify the correctness of the proposed mathematical model

    A three-stage model for closed-loop supply chain configuration under uncertainty

    In this paper, a general closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network is configured which consists of multiple customers, parts, products, suppliers, remanufacturing subcontractors, and refurbishing sites. We propose a three-stage model including evaluation, network configuration, and selection and order allocation. In the first stage, suppliers, remanufacturing subcontractors, and refurbishing sites are evaluated based on a new quality function deployment (QFD) model. The proposed QFD model determines the relationship between customer requirements, part requirements, and process requirements. In addition, the fuzzy sets theory is utilised to overcome the uncertainty in the decision-making process. In the second stage, the closed-loop supply chain network is configured by a stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. It is supposed that demand is an uncertain parameter. Finally in the third stage, suppliers, remanufacturing subcontractors, and refurbishing sites are selected and order allocation is determined. To this end, a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model is presented. An illustrative example is conducted to show the process. The main novel innovation of the proposed model is to consider the CLSC network configuration and selection process simultaneously, under uncertain demand and in an uncertain decision-making environment

    Market-based Recommendation: Agents that Compete for Consumer Attention

    The amount of attention space available for recommending suppliers to consumers on e-commerce sites is typically limited. We present a competitive distributed recommendation mechanism based on adaptive software agents for efficiently allocating the 'consumer attention space', or banners. In the example of an electronic shopping mall, the task is delegated to the individual shops, each of which evaluates the information that is available about the consumer and his or her interests (e.g. keywords, product queries, and available parts of a profile). Shops make a monetary bid in an auction where a limited amount of 'consumer attention space' for the arriving consumer is sold. Each shop is represented by a software agent that bids for each consumer. This allows shops to rapidly adapt their bidding strategy to focus on consumers interested in their offerings. For various basic and simple models for on-line consumers, shops, and profiles, we demonstrate the feasibility of our system by evolutionary simulations as in the field of agent-based computational economics (ACE). We also develop adaptive software agents that learn bidding strategies, based on neural networks and strategy exploration heuristics. Furthermore, we address the commercial and technological advantages of this distributed market-based approach. The mechanism we describe is not limited to the example of the electronic shopping mall, but can easily be extended to other domains

    Optimal Global Supply Chain and Warehouse Planning under Uncertainty

    A manufacturing company\u27s inbound supply chain consists of various processes such as procurement, consolidation, and warehousing. Each of these processes is the focus of a different chapter in this dissertation. The manufacturer depends on its suppliers to provide the raw materials and parts required to manufacture a finished product. These suppliers can be located locally or overseas with respect to the manufacturer\u27s geographic location. The ordering and transportation lead times are shorter if the supplier is located locally. Just In Time (JIT) or Just In Sequence (JIS) inventory management methods could be practiced by the manufacturer to procure the raw materials and parts from the local supplier and control the inventory levels in the warehouse. In contrast, the lead time for the orders placed with an overseas supplier is usually long because sea-freight is often used as a primary mode of transportation. Therefore, the orders for the raw materials and parts (henceforth, we collectively refer to raw material and part by part) procured from overseas suppliers are usually placed using forecasted order quantities. In Chapter 2, we study the procurement process to reduce the overall expected cost and determine the optimal order quantities as well as the mode of transportation for procurement under forecast and inventory uncertainty. We formulate a two-stage stochastic integer programming model and solve it using the progressive hedging algorithm, a scenario-based decomposition method. Generally, the orders are placed with overseas suppliers using weekly or monthly forecasted demands, and the ordered part is delivered using sea-containers since sea-freight is the primary mode of transportation. However, the end manufacturing warehouse is usually designed to hold around one to two days of parts. To replenish the inventory levels, the manufacturer considered in this research unloads the sea-container that contains the part that needs to be restocked entirely. This may cause over-utilization of the manufacturer\u27s warehouse if an entire week\u27s supply of part is consolidated into a single sea-container. This problem is further aggravated if the manufacturer procures hundreds of different parts from overseas suppliers and stores them in its warehouse. In Chapter 3, we study the time-series forecasting models that help predict the manufacturing company\u27s daily demand quantities for parts with different characteristics. The manufacturer can use these forecasted daily demand quantities to consolidate the sea-containers instead of the weekly forecasted demand. In most cases, there is some discrepancy between the predicted and actual demands for parts, due to which the manufacturer can either have excess inventory or shortages. While excess inventory leads to higher inventory holding costs and warehouse utilization, shortages can result in substantially undesirable consequences, such as the total shutdown of production lines. Therefore, to avoid shortages, the manufacturer maintains predetermined safety stock levels of parts with the suppliers to fulfill the demands arising from shortages. We formulate a chance-constraint optimization model and solve it using the sample approximation approach to determine the daily safety stock levels at the supplier warehouse under forecast error uncertainty. Once the orders are placed with the local and overseas suppliers, they are consolidated into trailers (for local suppliers) and sea-containers (for overseas suppliers). The consolidated trailers and sea-containers are then delivered to the manufacturing plant, where they are stored in the yard until they are called upon for unloading. A detention penalty is incurred on a daily basis for holding a trailer or sea-container. Consolidating orders from different suppliers helps maximize trailer and sea-container space utilization and reduce transportation costs. Therefore, every sea-container and trailer potentially holds a mixture of parts. When a manufacturer needs to replenish the stocks of a given part, the entire sea-container or trailer that contains the required part is unloaded. Thus, some parts that are not imminently needed for production are also unloaded and stored inside the manufacturing warehouse along with the required parts. In Chapter 4, we study a multi-objective optimization model to determine the sea-containers and trailers to be unloaded on a given day to replenish stock levels such that the detention penalties and the manufacturing warehouse utilization are minimized. Once a sea-container or trailer is selected to replenish the warehouse inventory levels, its contents (i.e., pallets of parts) must be unloaded by the forklift operator and then processed by workers to update the stock levels and break down the pallets if needed. Finally, the unloaded and processed part is stored in the warehouse bins or shelves. In Chapter 5, we study the problem of determining the optimal team formation such that the total expected time required to unload, process, and store all the parts contained in the sea-containers and trailers selected for unloading on a given day is minimized

    Applying Revenue Management to the Reverse Supply Chain

    We study the disposition decision for product returns in a closed-loop supply chain. Motivated by the asset recovery process at IBM, we consider two disposition alternatives. Returns may be either refurbished for reselling or dismantled for spare parts. Reselling a refurbished unit typically yields higher unit margins. However, demand is uncertain. A common policy in many firms is to rank disposition alternatives by unit margins. We show that a revenue management approach to the disposition decision which explicitly incorporates demand uncertainty can increase profits significantly. We discuss analogies between the disposition problem and the classical airline revenue management problem. We then develop single period and multi-period stochastic optimization models for the disposition problem. Analyzing these models, we show that the optimal allocation balances expected marginal profits across the disposition alternatives. A detailed numerical study reveals that a revenue management approach to the disposition problem significantly outperforms the current practice of focusing exclusively on high-margin options, and we identify conditions under which this improvement is the highest. We also show that the value recovered from the returned products critically depends on the coordination between forward and reverse supply chain decisions.remanufacturing;revenue management;onderdelen;revenues;spare parts inventory
