    Continuing advances in space and Earth science requires increasing amounts of data to be gathered from spaceborne sensors. NASA expects to launch sensors during the next two decades which will be capable of producing an aggregate of 1500 Megabits per second if operated simultaneously. Such high data rates cause stresses in all aspects of end-to-end data systems. Technologies and techniques are needed to relieve such stresses. Potential solutions to the massive data rate problems are: data editing, greater transmission bandwidths, higher density and faster media, and data compression. Through four subpanels on Science Payload Operations, Multispectral Imaging, Microwave Remote Sensing and Science Data Management, recommendations were made for research in data compression and scientific data applications to space platforms

    This thesis explores the nature of digital gaming platforms once they have been expatriated from the consumer marketplace and have been relegated to obsolescence. In this state, abandonware becomes a site for creative interventions by active audiences, who exploit, hack and modify these consoles in order to accommodate a range of creative practices. As part of the digital toolkit for fan production, the Sega Dreamcast has become a focal point for fan based video game remix practices, whereby fan creators appropriate imagery and iconography from popular media to create new works derivative of these franchises. These fan practices subvert the proprietary protocols of digital platforms, re-contextualizing them as devices for creative intervention by practitioners, who distribute their works and the knowledge necessary to produce them, through online communities

    B!SON: A Tool for Open Access Journal Recommendation

    Finding a suitable open access journal to publish scientific work is a complex task: Researchers have to navigate a constantly growing number of journals, institutional agreements with publishers, funders’ conditions and the risk of Predatory Publishers. To help with these challenges, we introduce a web-based journal recommendation system called B!SON. It is developed based on a systematic requirements analysis, built on open data, gives publisher-independent recommendations and works across domains. It suggests open access journals based on title, abstract and references provided by the user. The recommendation quality has been evaluated using a large test set of 10,000 articles. Development by two German scientific libraries ensures the longevity of the project

    Video Copy Detection Utilizing Log-Polar Transformation

    Video Copy Detection is the process of comparing two videos to determine their similarity and determine if they are copies. This thesis enhances some of the common algorithms used in Video Copy Detection by utilizing the Log-Polar transformation as a pre-processing step. This pre-processing step is expected to increase speed of the overall Video Copy Detection process while maintaining the accuracy of the algorithms. The results of this research show that the addition of a Log-Polar pre-processing step reduces the computation time of the overall Video Copy Detection process. The additional time necessary to perform the Log-Polar pre-processing step is outweighed by the overall reduction in computation time. The accuracy and recall are slightly affected by the addition of this pre-processing step. The results also show that the video frame size can be significantly compressed with minimal effect to the algorithm\u27s overall performance

    Spectrum Sharing technologies enables more dynamic spectrum management regulation and framework to provide capacity for the ever-increasing demand of mobile data traffic. This thesis reviewed the background and current state of the development of Spectrum Sharing approaches. TVWS, LSA and CBRS were examined in detail as the most representative solutions. The thesis compared architectural similarities and differences between LSA and CBRS. The thesis reviewed SAS-CBSD interface protocol and continued with a practical validation of SAS-CBSD interface specification. By implementing the interface in Python, interface simulation was conducted via the assistance of automation scripts. The thesis concluded that the SAS-CBSD interface is functioning as designed, noting that ESC will further extend the spectrum access dynamism. The thesis also pointed out the need to specify SAS-relevant data models for database API standardization

    Edge Intelligence : Empowering Intelligence to the Edge of Network

    Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis proximity to where data are captured based on artificial intelligence. Edge intelligence aims at enhancing data processing and protects the privacy and security of the data and users. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this article, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey of the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, i.e., edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare, and analyze the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, and so on. This article provides a comprehensive survey of edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarize the development of the emerging research fields and the current state of the art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical directions.Peer reviewe
