    Mathematical modelling ano optimization strategies for acoustic source localization in reverberant environments

    La presente Tesis se centra en el uso de técnicas modernas de optimización y de procesamiento de audio para la localización precisa y robusta de personas dentro de un entorno reverberante dotado con agrupaciones (arrays) de micrófonos. En esta tesis se han estudiado diversos aspectos de la localización sonora, incluyendo el modelado, la algoritmia, así como el calibrado previo que permite usar los algoritmos de localización incluso cuando la geometría de los sensores (micrófonos) es desconocida a priori. Las técnicas existentes hasta ahora requerían de un número elevado de micrófonos para obtener una alta precisión en la localización. Sin embargo, durante esta tesis se ha desarrollado un nuevo método que permite una mejora de más del 30\% en la precisión de la localización con un número reducido de micrófonos. La reducción en el número de micrófonos es importante ya que se traduce directamente en una disminución drástica del coste y en un aumento de la versatilidad del sistema final. Adicionalmente, se ha realizado un estudio exhaustivo de los fenómenos que afectan al sistema de adquisición y procesado de la señal, con el objetivo de mejorar el modelo propuesto anteriormente. Dicho estudio profundiza en el conocimiento y modelado del filtrado PHAT (ampliamente utilizado en localización acústica) y de los aspectos que lo hacen especialmente adecuado para localización. Fruto del anterior estudio, y en colaboración con investigadores del instituto IDIAP (Suiza), se ha desarrollado un sistema de auto-calibración de las posiciones de los micrófonos a partir del ruido difuso presente en una sala en silencio. Esta aportación relacionada con los métodos previos basados en la coherencia. Sin embargo es capaz de reducir el ruido atendiendo a parámetros físicos previamente conocidos (distancia máxima entre los micrófonos). Gracias a ello se consigue una mejor precisión utilizando un menor tiempo de cómputo. El conocimiento de los efectos del filtro PHAT ha permitido crear un nuevo modelo que permite la representación 'sparse' del típico escenario de localización. Este tipo de representación se ha demostrado ser muy conveniente para localización, permitiendo un enfoque sencillo del caso en el que existen múltiples fuentes simultáneas. La última aportación de esta tesis, es el de la caracterización de las Matrices TDOA (Time difference of arrival -Diferencia de tiempos de llegada, en castellano-). Este tipo de matrices son especialmente útiles en audio pero no están limitadas a él. Además, este estudio transciende a la localización con sonido ya que propone métodos de reducción de ruido de las medias TDOA basados en una representación matricial 'low-rank', siendo útil, además de en localización, en técnicas tales como el beamforming o el autocalibrado

    Acoustic detection and localisation system for Hylotrupes bajulus L. larvae using a MEMS microphone array

    Producción CientíficaA novel system for acoustic detection of the presence of xylophagous insect larvae inside structural timber beams is presented. It is based on an extensive array of MEMS microphones that allows the acoustic detection and localisation of the larvae when they are active. In a first phase, the activity of the larvae is continuously detected by means of frequency filtering and a sliding energy estimator, and after that, a set of short-duration segmented signals is generated, which obtains the spatial localisation of the larvae, by means of a shaping algorithm based on delay-sum beamforming techniques. The tests carried out demonstrate that it is possible to detect and locate multiple larvae of Hylotrupes bajulus L. inside structural-sized pieces of wood of Pinus syilvestris L., as well as their internal trajectory. In the future, the system could address the identification of the specific type of xylophage responsible for the deterioration by using machine learning or equivalent techniques, based on the temporal and frequency information of the detected sound events.     Real-time Microphone Array Processing for Sound-field Analysis and Perceptually Motivated Reproduction

    This thesis details real-time implementations of sound-field analysis and perceptually motivated reproduction methods for visualisation and auralisation purposes. For the former, various methods for visualising the relative distribution of sound energy from one point in space are investigated and contrasted; including a novel reformulation of the cross-pattern coherence (CroPaC) algorithm, which integrates a new side-lobe suppression technique. Whereas for auralisation applications, listening tests were conducted to compare ambisonics reproduction with a novel headphone formulation of the directional audio coding (DirAC) method. The results indicate that the side-lobe suppressed CroPaC method offers greater spatial selectivity in reverberant conditions compared with other popular approaches, and that the new DirAC formulation yields higher perceived spatial accuracy when compared to the ambisonics method

    Spatial dissection of a soundfield using spherical harmonic decomposition

    A real-world soundfield is often contributed by multiple desired and undesired sound sources. The performance of many acoustic systems such as automatic speech recognition, audio surveillance, and teleconference relies on its ability to extract the desired sound components in such a mixed environment. The existing solutions to the above problem are constrained by various fundamental limitations and require to enforce different priors depending on the acoustic condition such as reverberation and spatial distribution of sound sources. With the growing emphasis and integration of audio applications in diverse technologies such as smart home and virtual reality appliances, it is imperative to advance the source separation technology in order to overcome the limitations of the traditional approaches. To that end, we exploit the harmonic decomposition model to dissect a mixed soundfield into its underlying desired and undesired components based on source and signal characteristics. By analysing the spatial projection of a soundfield, we achieve multiple outcomes such as (i) soundfield separation with respect to distinct source regions, (ii) source separation in a mixed soundfield using modal coherence model, and (iii) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of multiple overlapping sound sources through pattern recognition of the modal coherence of a soundfield. We first employ an array of higher order microphones for soundfield separation in order to reduce hardware requirement and implementation complexity. Subsequently, we develop novel mathematical models for modal coherence of noisy and reverberant soundfields that facilitate convenient ways for estimating DOA and power spectral densities leading to robust source separation algorithms. The modal domain approach to the soundfield/source separation allows us to circumvent several practical limitations of the existing techniques and enhance the performance and robustness of the system. The proposed methods are presented with several practical applications and performance evaluations using simulated and real-life dataset
