    Parallel Reference Speaker Weighting for Kinematic-Independent Acoustic-to-Articulatory Inversion

    Acoustic-to-articulatory inversion, the estimation of articulatory kinematics from an acoustic waveform, is a challenging but important problem. Accurate estimation of articulatory movements has the potential for significant impact on our understanding of speech production, on our capacity to assess and treat pathologies in a clinical setting, and on speech technologies such as computer aided pronunciation assessment and audio-video synthesis. However, because of the complex and speaker-specific relationship between articulation and acoustics, existing approaches for inversion do not generalize well across speakers. As acquiring speaker-specific kinematic data for training is not feasible in many practical applications, this remains an important and open problem. This paper proposes a novel approach to acoustic-to-articulatory inversion, Parallel Reference Speaker Weighting (PRSW), which requires no kinematic data for the target speaker and a small amount of acoustic adaptation data. PRSW hypothesizes that acoustic and kinematic similarities are correlated and uses speaker-adapted articulatory models derived from acoustically derived weights. The system was assessed using a 20-speaker data set of synchronous acoustic and Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) kinematic data. Results demonstrate that by restricting the reference group to a subset consisting of speakers with strong individual speaker-dependent inversion performance, the PRSW method is able to attain kinematic-independent acoustic-to-articulatory inversion performance nearly matching that of the speaker-dependent model, with an average correlation of 0.62 versus 0.63. This indicates that given a sufficiently complete and appropriately selected reference speaker set for adaptation, it is possible to create effective articulatory models without kinematic training data

    Articulatory and bottleneck features for speaker-independent ASR of dysarthric speech

    The rapid population aging has stimulated the development of assistive devices that provide personalized medical support to the needies suffering from various etiologies. One prominent clinical application is a computer-assisted speech training system which enables personalized speech therapy to patients impaired by communicative disorders in the patient's home environment. Such a system relies on the robust automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology to be able to provide accurate articulation feedback. With the long-term aim of developing off-the-shelf ASR systems that can be incorporated in clinical context without prior speaker information, we compare the ASR performance of speaker-independent bottleneck and articulatory features on dysarthric speech used in conjunction with dedicated neural network-based acoustic models that have been shown to be robust against spectrotemporal deviations. We report ASR performance of these systems on two dysarthric speech datasets of different characteristics to quantify the achieved performance gains.     Speaker-Specific Adaptation of Maeda Synthesis Parameters for Auditory Feedback

    The Real-time Articulatory Speech Synthesizer (RASS) is a research tool in the Marquette Speech and Swallowing lab that simultaneously collects acoustic and articulatory data from human participants. The system is used to study acoustic-to-articulatory inversion, articulatory-to-acoustic synthesis mapping, and the effects of real-time acoustic feedback. Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) is utilized to collect position data via sensors placed in a subject’s mouth. These kinematic data are then converted into a set of synthesis parameters that controls an articulatory speech synthesizer, which in turn generates an acoustic waveform matching the associated kinematics. Independently from RASS, the synthesized acoustic waveform can be further modified before it is returned to the subject, creating the opportunity for involuntary learning through controlled acoustic feedback. In order to maximize the impact of involuntary learning, the characteristics of the synthetically generated speech need to closely match those of the participant. There are a number of synthesis parameters that cannot be directly controlled by subjects’ articulatory movements such as fundamental frequency and parameters corresponding to physiological measures such as vocal tract length and overall vocal tract size. The goal of this work is to develop a mechanism for automatically determining RASS internal synthesis parameters that provide the closest synthesis parameter match to a subject’s acoustic characteristics, ultimately increasing the system’s positive effect on involuntary learning.. The methods detailed in this thesis examine the effects of altering both time-independent and time-dependent synthesis parameters to increase the acoustic similarity between subjects’ real and synthesized speech. The fundamental frequency and first two formant values are studied in particular across multiple vowels to determine the time-independent parameter settings. Time-dependent parameter analysis is performed through the use of a real-time parameter-tracking configuration. Results of this work provide a way of adapting the Maeda synthesis parameters in RASS to be speaker-specific and individualize the study of auditory feedback. This investigation will allow researchers to better customize the RASS system for individual subjects and alter involuntary learning outcomes

    Using phonetic constraints in acoustic-to-articulatory inversion

    The goal of this work is to recover articulatory information from the speech signal by acoustic-to-articulatory inversion. One of the main difficulties with inversion is that the problem is underdetermined and inversion methods generally offer no guarantee on the phonetical realism of the inverse solutions. A way to adress this issue is to use additional phonetic constraints. Knowledge of the phonetic caracteristics of French vowels enable the derivation of reasonable articulatory domains in the space of Maeda parameters: given the formants frequencies (F1,F2,F3) of a speech sample, and thus the vowel identity, an "ideal" articulatory domain can be derived. The space of formants frequencies is partitioned into vowels, using either speaker-specific data or generic information on formants. Then, to each articulatory vector can be associated a phonetic score varying with the distance to the "ideal domain" associated with the corresponding vowel. Inversion experiments were conducted on isolated vowels and vowel-to-vowel transitions. Articulatory parameters were compared with those obtained without using these constraints and those measured from X-ray data

    Articulatory features for speech-driven head motion synthesis

    This study investigates the use of articulatory features for speech-driven head motion synthesis as opposed to prosody features such as F0 and energy that have been mainly used in the literature. In the proposed approach, multi-stream HMMs are trained jointly on the synchronous streams of speech and head motion data. Articulatory features can be regarded as an intermediate parametrisation of speech that are expected to have a close link with head movement. Measured head and articulatory movements acquired by EMA were synchronously recorded with speech. Measured articulatory data was compared to those predicted from speech using an HMM-based inversion mapping system trained in a semi-supervised fashion. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) on a data set of free speech of 12 people shows that the articulatory features are more correlated with head rotation than prosodic and/or cepstral speech features. It is also shown that the synthesised head motion using articulatory features gave higher correlations with the original head motion than when only prosodic features are used.     Speaker Independent Acoustic-to-Articulatory Inversion

    Acoustic-to-articulatory inversion, the determination of articulatory parameters from acoustic signals, is a difficult but important problem for many speech processing applications, such as automatic speech recognition (ASR) and computer aided pronunciation training (CAPT). In recent years, several approaches have been successfully implemented for speaker dependent models with parallel acoustic and kinematic training data. However, in many practical applications inversion is needed for new speakers for whom no articulatory data is available. In order to address this problem, this dissertation introduces a novel speaker adaptation approach called Parallel Reference Speaker Weighting (PRSW), based on parallel acoustic and articulatory Hidden Markov Models (HMM). This approach uses a robust normalized articulatory space and palate referenced articulatory features combined with speaker-weighted adaptation to form an inversion mapping for new speakers that can accurately estimate articulatory trajectories. The proposed PRSW method is evaluated on the newly collected Marquette electromagnetic articulography - Mandarin Accented English (EMA-MAE) corpus using 20 native English speakers. Cross-speaker inversion results show that given a good selection of reference speakers with consistent acoustic and articulatory patterns, the PRSW approach gives good speaker independent inversion performance even without kinematic training data

    Articulatory-WaveNet: Deep Autoregressive Model for Acoustic-to-Articulatory Inversion

    Acoustic-to-Articulatory Inversion, the estimation of articulatory kinematics from speech, is an important problem which has received significant attention in recent years. Estimated articulatory movements from such models can be used for many applications, including speech synthesis, automatic speech recognition, and facial kinematics for talking-head animation devices. Knowledge about the position of the articulators can also be extremely useful in speech therapy systems and Computer-Aided Language Learning (CALL) and Computer-Aided Pronunciation Training (CAPT) systems for second language learners. Acoustic-to-Articulatory Inversion is a challenging problem due to the complexity of articulation patterns and significant inter-speaker differences. This is even more challenging when applied to non-native speakers without any kinematic training data. This dissertation attempts to address these problems through the development of up-graded architectures for Articulatory Inversion. The proposed Articulatory-WaveNet architecture is based on a dilated causal convolutional layer structure that improves the Acoustic-to-Articulatory Inversion estimated results for both speaker-dependent and speaker-independent scenarios. The system has been evaluated on the ElectroMagnetic Articulography corpus of Mandarin Accented English (EMA-MAE) corpus, consisting of 39 speakers including both native English speakers and Mandarin accented English speakers. Results show that Articulatory-WaveNet improves the performance of the speaker-dependent and speaker-independent Acoustic-to-Articulatory Inversion systems significantly compared to the previously reported results
