    Energy Efficient Manufacturing Scheduling: A Systematic Literature Review

    The social context in relation to energy policies, energy supply, and sustainability concerns as well as advances in more energy-efficient technologies is driving a need for a change in the manufacturing sector. The main purpose of this work is to provide a research framework for energy-efficient scheduling (EES) which is a very active research area with more than 500 papers published in the last 10 years. The reason for this interest is mostly due to the economic and environmental impact of considering energy in production scheduling. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review of recent papers in this area, provide a classification of the problems studied, and present an overview of the main aspects and methodologies considered as well as open research challenges

    A Memetic Algorithm for Hybrid Flowshops with Flexible Machine Availability Constraints

    This paper considers the problem of scheduling hybrid flowshops with machine availability constraints (MAC) to minimize makespan. The paper deals with a specific case of MAC caused by preventive maintenance (PM) operations. Contrary to previous papers considering fixed or/and conservative policies, we explore a case in which PM activities might be postponed or expedited while necessary. Regarding this flexibility in PM activities, we expect to obtain more efficient schedule. A simple technique is employed to schedule production jobs along with the flexible MACs caused by PM. To solve the problem, we present a high performing metaheuristic based on memetic algorithm incorporating some advanced features. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, the paper compares the proposed algorithm with several wellknown algorithms taken from the literature. Finally, we conclude that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms

    Optimisation of Capacitated Planned Preventive Maintenance in Multiple Production Lines Using Optimisation-in-the-Loop Simulation

    In a mass customisation manufacturing system, the production schedule is tailored to the customer's specifications. However, the production system must be accompanied by an effective maintenance program to ensure that the production lines operate as intended. The purpose of this study is to optimise planned preventive maintenance across multiple production lines. An optimised Weibull distribution is proposed to model the machine's Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), and the total expected maintenance cost is calculated using this distribution, taking into account the probability of the machines remaining operational and failing. Because the optimised Weibull distribution is a continuous distribution, in order to simulate the continuous time domain, it will be divided into several sub-systems and optimised using Bayesian optimisation during simulation. The maintenance scheduling is carried out by considering available time capacity after production scheduling was arranged. The study's findings indicate that the proposed method successfully optimised the planned maintenance schedule without interfering production activity with total cost for the proposed maintenance planning as low as IDR 50.017,75/maintenance unit time

    Preventive maintenance effect on the aggregate production planning model with tow-phase production systems: modeling and solution methods

    This paper develops two mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models for an integrated aggregate production planning (APP) system with return products, breakdowns and preventive maintenance (PM). The goal is to minimize the cost of production with regard to PM costs, breakdowns, the number of laborers and inventory levels and downtimes. Due to NP-hard class of APP, we implement a harmony search (HS) algorithm and vibration damping optimization (VDO) algorithm for solving these models. Next, the Taguchi method is conducted to calibrate the parameter of the metaheuristics and select the optimal levels of factors influencing the algorithm’s performance. Computational results tested on a set of randomly generated instances show the efficiency of the vibration damping optimization algorithm against the harmony search algorithm. We find VDO algorithm to obtain best quality solutions for APP with breakdowns and PM, which could be efficient for large scale problems. Finally, the computational results show that the objective function values obtained by APP with PM are better than APP with breakdown results

    Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization for Hybrid Flowshop Scheduling Problem with Maintenance Activities

    A hybrid algorithm which combines particle swarm optimization (PSO) and iterated local search (ILS) is proposed for solving the hybrid flowshop scheduling (HFS) problem with preventive maintenance (PM) activities. In the proposed algorithm, different crossover operators and mutation operators are investigated. In addition, an efficient multiple insert mutation operator is developed for enhancing the searching ability of the algorithm. Furthermore, an ILS-based local search procedure is embedded in the algorithm to improve the exploitation ability of the proposed algorithm. The detailed experimental parameter for the canonical PSO is tuning. The proposed algorithm is tested on the variation of 77 Carlier and Néron’s benchmark problems. Detailed comparisons with the present efficient algorithms, including hGA, ILS, PSO, and IG, verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm

    International audienceIn this paper, we deal with a joint production and Preventive Maintenance (PM) scheduling problem in the robustness framework. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we will establish that the insertion of maintenance activities during production scheduling can hedge against some changes in the shop environment. Furthermore, we will check if respecting the optimal intervals of maintenance activities guarantees a minimal robustness threshold. Then, we will try to identify from the used optimisation criteria those that allow making predictive schedules more robust. The computational experiments in a flowshop show that joint production and PM schedules are more robust than production schedules and maintenance provides an acceptable tradeoff between equipment reliability and performance loss under disruption

    Integrated Batching and Lot Streaming with Variable Sublots and Sequence-Dependent Setups in a Two-Stage Hybrid Flow Shop

    Consider a paint manufacturing firm whose customers typically place orders for two or more products simultaneously: liquid primer, top coat paint, and/or undercoat paint. Each product belongs to an associated product family that can be batched together during the manufacturing process. Meanwhile, each product can be split into several sublots so that overlapping production is possible in a two-stage hybrid flow shop. Various numbers of identical capacitated machines operate in parallel at each stage. We present a mixed-integer programming (MIP) to analyze this novel integrated batching and lot streaming problem with variable sublots, incompatible job families, and sequence-dependent setup times. The model determines the number of sublots for each product, the size of each sublot, and the production sequencing for each sublot such that the sum of weighted completion time is minimized. Several numerical example problems are presented to validate the proposed formulation and to compare results with similar problems in the literature. Furthermore, an experimental design based on real industrial data is used to evaluate the performance of proposed model. Results indicate that the computational cost of solving the model is high
