Reports on a study that analyzes the use of a collection of printed journals in a Brazilian university library, using structured and systematic non-participant observational research. The study is placed within the area of "information and collection use", inspired by the contributions of Lancaster, Wilson and other authors in the field of user and use studies. Use of this journal collection was also analyzed using the Library ́s own statistical data on collection use, for the period of 2012 to 2015. From the data obtained, we hope to contribute to the definition of policy parameters aiming to adjust the physical space currently used for this printed journal collection, aiming to collaborate so that the library might be more in tune with user needs and the research and projects developed in the University

This study investigates information needs of students and the role of academic libraries, using Covenant University library as a case study. The investigation was based on the data generated through questionnaire, interview and library statistics to elicit information on the frequency of library use, purpose for using the library, means of locating library resources, library resources most consulted, most used library services and the problems encountered in using the services and resources in the library. The result indicated that majority of the students sometimes use the library to read for examination and to up-date knowledge; 58.94% of the students consult Online Public Access to locate library resources. The library resources most consulted by the students are the textbooks, while the most used library service is the lending service. The study recommends regular library orientation for a more effective use of OPAC and e-resources; good staff recruitment, personnel who are highly skilled and knowledgeable to understand information needs of the students; good communication between students and library staff must be encouraged in order to understand their information needs; moreover, the use of suggestion box in the library enables the students to give suggestions on how the library can serve them better. It was concluded that effective academic library information services delivery requires quality service and adequate professional strategic management. Regular survey on users and use studies would show the strengths and weaknesses in the activities of the library and assist in understanding the information needs of the students

This article reports the findings of a study modeled after Saracevic, Shaw, and Kantor\u27s efforts to identify and quantify the causes of users\u27 failures to identify and locate library materials. The researchers analyzed patron-reported and librarian-observed subject and known-item searches and found an overall success rate of only 54 percent. The problems that led to the 46 percent failure rate were analyzed by source and type of failure, and subjective observations concerning problems encountered by patrons were recorded. Recommendations are made for reducing library malfunctions and circulation, patron, and acquisition errors

The clientele served by the Technology Use Studies Center (TUSC) is updated. Manufacturing leads the list of client firms. The standard industrial classification (SIC) range of these firms is broad. Substantial numbers of college and university faculties are using TUSC services. Field operations inherent in the functions of dissemination and assistance are reviewed. Increasing emphasis among clientele is on environmental concerns and management. A record is provided of the institutions contacted and the extent of TUSC involvement with them, as well as TUSC's cooperation with agencies and organizations. The impact of TUSC and the NASA-sponsored Technology Utilization Program on other public agencies is discussed

Information and communication technology (ICT) use studies in libraries are often approached by generalising the ICT facilities without categorisation, however, not all ICT facilities are available, accessible and used in libraries. In the case of libraries where they are available, the dearth of literature exists as to the contribution of each category to the overall perceived benefits of the ICT to library services. Based on the categorisation by Gama (2007), this study was carried out to determine the influence of ICT facilities viz; computing facilities, film/tape-based facilities, reproduction facilities, telecommunication facilities and broadcasting facilities on perceived benefits to library services in the first generation universities in the southwest, Nigeria. A survey of correlational type was conducted using a total of enumeration of 107 staff in the study area. Data was collected through an adapted questionnaire and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was conducted to determine the correlation of each ICT facilities with perceived benefits to library service while multiple regression was conducted to determine the relative contribution of each independent measures to the dependent measure. The study found that only computing, broadcasting and telecommunication facilities influenced ICT benefits to library service, though all of the ICT facilities put together relatively contributed to the perceived benefits of ICT to library services. The study, therefore, recommended that film/tape-based facilities and reproduction facilities should be given the required attention by libraries in service delivery so as to better serve the library clients qualitativel

Variables that affect print journal use are discussed, highlighting college student needs and behaviors. Validity and reliability of journal use studies is investigated, and the use of Coefficient of Variance is described as a tool to measure the reliability of journal use counts. Results show that overall use of the print collection decreased by 52 percent. Use of print journals also available in full text showed a greater decrease in use than journals not available online. Changes in use for each of the academic disciplines represented at the college are reported
