    Programa Oficial de Doutoramento en Análise Económica e Estratexia Empresarial. 5033V0[Resumen] Las técnicas de simulación, tal y como hoy las conocemos, comenzaron a mediados del siglo XX; primero con la aparición del primer computador y el desarrollo del método Monte Carlo, y más tarde con el desarrollo del primer simulador de propósito específico conocido como GPS y desarrollado por Geoffrey Gordon en IBM y la publicación del primer texto completo dedicado a esta materia y llamado the Art of Simulation (K.D. Tocher, 1963). Estás técnicas han evolucionado de una manera extraordinaria y hoy en día están plenamente implementadas en diversos campos de actividad. Las instalaciones portuarias no han escapado de esta tendencia, especialmente las dedicadas al tráfico de contenedores. Efectivamente, las características intrínsecas de este sector económico, le hacen un candidato idóneo para la implementación de modelos de simulación con propósitos y alcances muy diversos. No existe, sin embargo y hasta lo que conocemos, un trabajo científico que compile y analice pormenorizadamente tanto la historia como la evolución de simulación en ambientes portuarios, ayudando a clasificar los mismos y determinar cómo estos pueden ayudar en el análisis económico de estas instalaciones y en la formulación de las oportunas estrategias empresariales. As instalacións portuarias non escaparon desta tendencia, especialmente as dedicadas ao tráfico de contenedores. Efectivamente, as características intrínsecas deste sector económico, fanlle un candidato idóneo para a implementación de modelos de simulación con propósitos e alcances moi variados. Con todo, e ata o que coñecemos, non existe un traballo científico que compila e analiza de forma detallada tanto a historia como a evolución da simulación en estes ambientes portuarios, clasificando os mesmos e determinando como estes poden axudar na análise económica destas instalacións e na formulación das oportunas estratexias empresariais. Este é o último obxectivo da presente tese doutoral.[Abstract] Simulation, to the extend that we understand it nowadays, began in the middle of the 20th century; first with the appearance of the computer and the development of the Monte Carlo method, and later with the development of the first specific purpose simulator known as GPS developed by Geoffrey Gordon in IBM. This author published the first full text devoted to this subject “The Art of Simulation” in 1963. These techniques have evolved in an extraordinary way and nowadays they are fully implemented in different fields of activity. Port facilities have not escaped this trend, especially those dedicated to container traffic. Indeed, the intrinsic characteristics of this economic sector, make it a suitable candidate for the implementation of simulation with very different purposes and scope. However, to the best of our knowelegde, there is not a scientific work that compiles and analyzes in detail both, the history and the evolution of simulation in port environments, contributing to classify them and determine how they can help in the economic analysis of these facilities and in the formulation of different business strategies.     Simulation modeling and analysis of messaging system of a mechanized infantry brigade

Not only to gain information on battlefield, but also to convey it where it is needed on time, will be very important. The next generation mobile tactical communications systems will provide a robust, reliable, secure and flexible network to the mobile users of tactical battlefield. However, it is a question under interest to predict the impacts of different battle conditions on their performance. In this study, a simulation study of messaging system of a model brigade in which mobile users employ TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) radios and TDMA technique for channel access is conducted. The focus of this study is to construct a simulation model of a messaging system of a mechanized infantry brigade on tactical battlefield and to determine if the system is capable of supporting the data exchange in performance criteria under different conditions. Also, the factors that have significant effects on the system performance are investigated. The simulation is developed in Arena 7.0 simulation program and results are analyzed by using SPSS statistical package program.Can, İbrahimM.S

    Component-Based Tools for Educational Simulations

    e-Learning is an effective medium for delivering knowledge and skills. In spite of improvements in electronic delivery technologies, e-Learning is still a long way away from offering anything close to efficient and effective learning environments. To improve e-Learning experiences, much literature supports simulation based e-Learning. This thesis begins identifying various types of simulation models and their features that induce experiential learning. We focus on designing and constructing an easy-to-use Discrete Event Simulation (DES) tool for building engaging and informative interactive DES models that allow learners to control the models’ parameters and visualizations through runtime interactions. DES has long been used to support analysis and design of complex systems but its potential to enhance learning has not yet been fully utilized. We first present an application framework and its resulting classes for better structuring DES models. However, importing relevant classes, establishing relationships between their objects and representing lifecycles of various types of active objects in a language that does not support concurrency demand a significant cognitive workload. To improve this situation, we utilize two design patterns to ease model structuring and logic representation (both in time and space) through a drag and drop component approach. The patterns are the Delegation Event Model, used for linking between components and delegating tasks of executing and updating active objects’ lifecycles, and the MVC (Model-View-Controller) pattern, used for connecting the components to their graphical instrumentations and GUIs. Components implementing both design patterns support the process-oriented approach, can easily be tailored to store model states and visualizations, and can be extended to design higher level models through hierarchical simulation development. Evaluating this approach with both teachers and learners using ActionScript as an implementation language in the Flash environment shows that the resulting components not only help model designers with few programming skills to construct DES models, but they also allow learners to conduct various experiments through interactive GUIs and observe the impact of changes to model behaviour through a range of engaging visualizations. Such interactions can motivate learners and make their learning an enjoyable experience

Flavonoidler bitki aleminde yaygın olarak bulunan doğal bileşiklerdir. Çok çeşitli biyolojik aktivitelere sahip olmaları nedeniyle bu bileşiklerin sentezine olan ilgi de giderek artmaktadır. Bu çalışmada bazı flavonoid türevlerinin sentezi için yeni yöntemler geliştirilmiştir. İlk olarak, NaHSCVSiCh katalizörlüğünde 1,3-diketon türevlerinden konvansiyonel ısıtma ile flavon sentezi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Daha sonra, aynı reaksiyonlar çözücüsüz ortamda NaHS(VSi02 varlığında mikrodalga ışıma ile denenmiştir. Her iki uygulamada da hem oldukça yüksek verim elde edilmiş, hem de düşük maliyetli, eldesi kolay, güvenli ve kirlilik oluşturmayan bir katalizör kullanılmıştır. Son olarak, kalkon-flavonon izomerizasyonu incelenmiş, başka reaktif kullanmaksızın etandiol içinde 150°C'de bu dönüşümün gerçekleştiği tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen ürünlerin !H NMR, I3C NMR ve kütle spektrumlan alınarak yapıları doğrulanmıştır.SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SOME FLAVONOIDS SUMMARY Key words: Flavonoids, Synthesis of Flavones, Synthesis of Flavanones, Silica Gel Supported NaHS04 Catalyst, Microwave Irradiation, Solvent-Free Reactions Flavonoids are a group of naturally occuring compounds widely distrubuted in the plant kingdom. Due to their diverse biological avtivities, synthesis of these compounds has a great interest. In this study, new methods were improved for the synthesis of some flavonoids. First of all, starting with 1,3-diketones and using NaHSCvSiCh as the catalyst, synthesis of flavones was examined by conventional heating. The same reactions were also carried out in solvent free conditions by microwave irradiation. These methods not only afforded the products in high yield but also avoided the problems associated with catalyst cost, handling, safety and pollution. At last, chalcone flavanone isomerization was investigated and found that the conversion is possible by heating in ethandiole at 150°C. ]H NMR, i3C NMR and mass spectrums of all the final products were elucidated

    Existing and Required Modeling Capabilities for Evaluating ATM Systems and Concepts

    ATM systems throughout the world are entering a period of major transition and change. The combination of important technological developments and of the globalization of the air transportation industry has necessitated a reexamination of some of the fundamental premises of existing Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts. New ATM concepts have to be examined, concepts that may place more emphasis on: strategic traffic management; planning and control; partial decentralization of decision-making; and added reliance on the aircraft to carry out strategic ATM plans, with ground controllers confined primarily to a monitoring and supervisory role. 'Free Flight' is a case in point. In order to study, evaluate and validate such new concepts, the ATM community will have to rely heavily on models and computer-based tools/utilities, covering a wide range of issues and metrics related to safety, capacity and efficiency. The state of the art in such modeling support is adequate in some respects, but clearly deficient in others. It is the objective of this study to assist in: (1) assessing the strengths and weaknesses of existing fast-time models and tools for the study of ATM systems and concepts and (2) identifying and prioritizing the requirements for the development of additional modeling capabilities in the near future. A three-stage process has been followed to this purpose: 1. Through the analysis of two case studies involving future ATM system scenarios, as well as through expert assessment, modeling capabilities and supporting tools needed for testing and validating future ATM systems and concepts were identified and described. 2. Existing fast-time ATM models and support tools were reviewed and assessed with regard to the degree to which they offer the capabilities identified under Step 1. 3 . The findings of 1 and 2 were combined to draw conclusions about (1) the best capabilities currently existing, (2) the types of concept testing and validation that can be carried out reliably with such existing capabilities and (3) the currently unavailable modeling capabilities that should receive high priority for near-term research and development. It should be emphasized that the study is concerned only with the class of 'fast time' analytical and simulation models. 'Real time' models, that typically involve humans-in-the-loop, comprise another extensive class which is not addressed in this report. However, the relationship between some of the fast-time models reviewed and a few well-known real-time models is identified in several parts of this report and the potential benefits from the combined use of these two classes of models-a very important subject-are discussed in chapters 4 and 7

    Deep Model for Improved Operator Function State Assessment

    A deep learning framework is presented for engagement assessment using EEG signals. Deep learning is a recently developed machine learning technique and has been applied to many applications. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning strategy for operator function state (OFS) assessment. Fifteen pilots participated in a flight simulation from Seattle to Chicago. During the four-hour simulation, EEG signals were recorded for each pilot. We labeled 20- minute data as engaged and disengaged to fine-tune the deep network and utilized the remaining vast amount of unlabeled data to initialize the network. The trained deep network was then used to assess if a pilot was engaged during the four-hour simulation
