    Performance Of Sea Surface Salinity And Soil Moisture Retrieval Algorithms With Different Auxiliary Datasets In 2-D L-Band Aperture Synthesis Interferometric Radiometers

    The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission was selected in May 1999 by the European Space Agency Earth Observation Programme Board to provide global and frequent soil moisture (SM) and sea surface salinity (SSS) maps. SMOS' single payload is the Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) sensor, an L-band two-dimensional aperture synthesis interferometric radiometer with multiangular and polarimetric imaging capabilities. The definition of the SMOS Level 2 Processor requires the selection of the optimum operation mode (dual-polarization or full-polarimetric) for each application, the specification of the required auxiliary data, and the optimum retrieval algorithms. Using the SMOS simulator and based on the experience gained in previous works, this paper presents a study of the SM and SSS retrieval capabilities over homogeneous pixels, in the two modes of operation with different auxiliary data. It is found that SSS retrievals using the first Stokes parameter measured in the dual-polarization mode perform somewhat worse than using the vertical (T/sub vv/) and horizontal (T/sub hh/) brightness temperatures measured in the full-polarimetric mode, and the performance degrades for cold waters due to the lower sensitivity of the brightness temperature to SSS at low sea surface temperature (SST). Due to the larger angular variation of T/sub hh/ and T/sub vv/, SM retrievals using T/sub hh/ and T/sub vv/ measured in the full-polarimetric mode exhibit a significant better performance over bare soils than over vegetation-covered soils. Over vegetation-covered soils vegetation parameters (opacity and albedo) can be inferred over a 550-km swath width in the full-polarimetric mode. However, since the first Stokes parameter is independent of both geometric and Faraday rotations, it is very robust in the presence of instrumental and geophysical errors. In the SSS retrieval problem and in the SM retrieval problem (with T/sub hh/ and T/sub vv/ measured in the full-polarimetric mode), the performance of the retrieval algorithms tested is not significantly altered if the model parameters are not exactly known, but are left as adjustable parameters in the optimization process.Peer Reviewe

    Contributions to radio frequency interference detection and mitigation in Earth observation

    Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is the most common problem for electronic measuring systems. The presence of those electromagnetic waves can harm the measurements taken from very sensitive instruments, like microwave radiometry or navigation systems. The accuracy and precision are compromised. A first step to mitigate those unwanted effects is to study the RFI properties. Different algorithms have been proposed to detect the interferences, but there is no method that works in all cases. The scope of this dissertation is the design, implementation and testing of different detection and mitigation methods in real-time. Performed surveys and characterization of RFI sources provide a great contribution to optimize the current mitigation techniques. In the mitigation area, two real-time hardware systems have been implemented: a wavelet denoise system to model the RFI and mitigate it, and a circuit to allow a navigation system to continue operational under the effects of a jammer.El problema més comú en els sistemes electrònics de mesura són les interferències electromagnètiques. La presència d'aquests senyals pot danyar les mesures preses per instruments molt sensibles, com radiòmetres de microones o sistemes de navegació. L'exactitud i precisió es veuen compromeses. El primer pas per mitigar aquests efectes no desitjats és estudiar les propietats de les interferències electromagnètiques. Diversos algoritmes han estat proposats per detectar interferències, però no hi ha mètode que funcioni bé en tots els casos . Aquest treball comprèn el disseny, implementació i comprovació de diferents mètodes de detecció i mitigació en temps real. Els estudis i caracterització de les fonts d'interferències són una gran contribució per a optimitzar les tècniques de mitigació actuals. En el tema de mitigació, dos sistemes en temps real han estat implementats en hardware: un sistema que utilitza wavelets per modelar la interferència i mitigar-la, i un circuit que permet a un sistema de navegació continuar funcionant sota els efectes d'un interferidor comercial ( jammer )

    Novel Satellite-Based Methodologies for Multi-Sensor and Multi-Scale Environmental Monitoring to Preserve Natural Capital

    Global warming, as the biggest manifestation of climate change, has changed the distribution of water in the hydrological cycle by increasing the evapotranspiration rate resulting in anthropogenic and natural hazards adversely affecting modern and past human properties and heritage in different parts of the world. The comprehension of environmental issues is critical for ensuring our existence on Earth and environmental sustainability. Environmental modeling can be described as a simplified form of a real system that enhances our knowledge of how a system operates. Such models represent the functioning of various processes of the environment, such as processes related to the atmosphere, hydrology, land surface, and vegetation. The environmental models can be applied on a wide range of spatiotemporal scales (i.e. from local to global and from daily to decadal levels); and they can employ various types of models (e.g. process-driven, empirical or data-driven, deterministic, stochastic, etc.). Satellite remote sensing and Earth Observation techniques can be utilized as a powerful tool for flood mapping and monitoring. By increasing the number of satellites orbiting around the Earth, the spatial and temporal coverage of environmental phenomenon on the planet has in-creased. However, handling such a massive amount of data was a challenge for researchers in terms of data curation and pre-processing as well as required computational power. The advent of cloud computing platforms has eliminated such steps and created a great opportunity for rapid response to environmental crises. The purpose of this study was to gather state-of-the-art remote sensing and/or earth observation techniques and to further the knowledge concerned with any aspect of the use of remote sensing and/or big data in the field of geospatial analysis. In order to achieve the goals of this study, some of the water-related climate-change phenomena were studied via different mathematical, statistical, geomorphological and physical models using different satellite and in-situ data on different centralized and decentralized computational platforms. The structure of this study was divided into three chapters with their own materials, methodologies and results including: (1) flood monitoring; (2) soil water balance modeling; and (3) vegetation monitoring. The results of this part of the study can be summarize in: 1) presenting innovative procedures for fast and semi-automatic flood mapping and monitoring based on geomorphic methods, change detection techniques and remote sensing data; 2) modeling soil moisture and water balance components in the root zone layer using in-situ, drone and satellite data; incorporating downscaling techniques; 3) combining statistical methods with the remote sensing data for detecting inner anomalies in the vegetation covers such as pest emergence; 4) stablishing and disseminating the use of cloud computation platforms such as Google Earth Engine in order to eliminate the unnecessary steps for data curation and pre-processing as well as required computational power to handle the massive amount of RS data. As a conclusion, this study resulted in provision of useful information and methodologies for setting up strategies to mitigate damage and support the preservation of areas and landscape rich in cultural and natural heritage

    OIL SPILL MODELING FOR IMPROVED RESPONSE TO ARCTIC MARITIME SPILLS: THE PATH FORWARD

    Maritime shipping and natural resource development in the Arctic are projected to increase as sea ice coverage decreases, resulting in a greater probability of more and larger oil spills. The increasing risk of Arctic spills emphasizes the need to identify the state-of-the-art oil trajectory and sea ice models and the potential for their integration. The Oil Spill Modeling for Improved Response to Arctic Maritime Spills: The Path Forward (AMSM) project, funded by the Arctic Domain Awareness Center (ADAC), provides a structured approach to gather expert advice to address U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Federal On-Scene Coordinator (FOSC) core needs for decision-making. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Response & Restoration (OR&R) provides scientific support to the USCG FOSC during oil spill response. As part of this scientific support, NOAA OR&R supplies decision support models that predict the fate (including chemical and physical weathering) and transport of spilled oil. Oil spill modeling in the Arctic faces many unique challenges including limited availability of environmental data (e.g., currents, wind, ice characteristics) at fine spatial and temporal resolution to feed models. Despite these challenges, OR&R’s modeling products must provide adequate spill trajectory predictions, so that response efforts minimize economic, cultural and environmental impacts, including those to species, habitats and food supplies. The AMSM project addressed the unique needs and challenges associated with Arctic spill response by: (1) identifying state-of-the-art oil spill and sea ice models, (2) recommending new components and algorithms for oil and ice interactions, (3) proposing methods for improving communication of model output uncertainty, and (4) developing methods for coordinating oil and ice modeling efforts

    Remote sensing based assessment of land cover and soil moisture in the Kilombero floodplain in Tanzania

    Wetlands provide important ecological, biological, and social-economic services that are critical for human existence. The increasing demand for food, arable land shortage and changing climate conditions in East Africa have created a paradigm shift from upland cultivation to wetland use due to their year-round soil water availability. However, there is need to control and manage the activities within the wetlands to ensure sustainable use while negating any negative effects caused by these activities. This is implemented through the decisions made by the land managers within the wetlands. Providing the users of the wetlands with scientific knowledge acts as a support tool for policy-making geared towards the sustainable use of the wetlands. The overall research contains two main components: First, the need for timely land cover maps at a reasonable scale, and secondly, the assessment of soil moisture as a major contributor to agricultural production. The objectives of the study were to generate land cover maps from multi-sensor optical datasets and to assess the performance of single-polarized Sentinel-1 Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) texture and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) features by applying multiple classification algorithms in a floodplain in the Kilombero catchment. Furthermore, soil moisture spatial-temporal patterns over three hydrological zones was assessed, estimation of soil moisture from radar data and generation of soil moisture products from global products was investigated. The correlation of the merged products to Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) measures was also investigated. RapidEye, Sentinel-2 and Landsat images were used in determining the areal extents of four major land cover classes namely vegetated, bare, water and built up. The acquisition period of the images ranges from August 2013 to June 2015 for the RapidEye images, December 2015 to August 2016 for the Sentinel-2 images and 2013 to 2016 Landsat-8 images were included in the land cover time series dynamic study. However, the major challenge arising was cloud coverage and hence Sentinel-1 images were tested in the application of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in wetland mapping. Variograms were used in spatial-temporal assessment of soil moisture data collected from three hydrological zones, riparian, middle and fringe. A roughness parameter was derived from a semi-empirical model. Soil moisture was retrieved from TerraSAR-X and RadarSAT-2 with the retrieved roughness parameter as an input in a linear regression equation. Triple collocation was applied in error assessment of the global soil moisture products prior to development of a merged product. Cross-correlation was applied in relating NDVI to soil moisture. Optical data (RapidEye, Landsat-8, and Sentinel-2) generated land cover maps used in assessing the land cover dynamics over time. The land cover ratios were related to depth to groundwater. As the depth to groundwater reduced in June the bare land coverage was 45-57% while that of vegetation was 34-47%. In December when the depth to groundwater was highest, bare land coverage was 62-69% while that of the vegetated area was 27-25%. This indicates that depth of groundwater and vegetation coverage responds to seasonality. During the dry season, 68-81% of the total vegetation class is within the riparian zone. In the classification of the SAR images, the overall accuracies for the single polarized VV images ranged from 54-76%, 60-81% and 61-80% for Random Forest (RF), Neural Network (NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) respectively. GLCM features had overall accuracies of 64-86%, 65-88% and 65-86% for RF, NN, and SVM respectively. PCA derived images had similar overall accuracies of 68-92% for NN, RF, and SVM respectively. The PCA images had the highest overall accuracy for the entire time series indicating that reduction in the number of texture features to layers containing the maximum variance improves the accuracy. The standard deviation of soil moisture was noted to increase with increasing soil moisture. Soil texture plays a key role in soil moisture retention. The riparian fields had a high water content explained by the high clay and organic matter content. A roughness parameter was derived and utilized in the retrieval of soil moisture from SAR resulting to R2 of 0.88- 0.92 between observed and simulated soil moisture values from co-polarized RadarSAT-2 HH and TerraSAR-X HH and VV. Merged soil moisture product from FEWSNET Land Data Assimilation System_NOAH (FLDAS_NOAH), ECMWF Re-Analysis Interim (ERA-Interim) and Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and FLDAS_Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC), ERA-Interim and SMOS had similar patterns attributed to FLDAS_NOAH and FLDAS_VIC forced by the same precipitation product (RFE). Cross-correlation of Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) NDVI and the merged soil moisture products revealed a 2-month lag of NDVI. Hence, the relationship is useful in determining the Start of Season from soil moisture products. In conclusion, the successful land cover mapping of the study area demonstrated the use of satellite imagery for wetland characterization. The vast coverage and frequent acquisitions of optical and microwave remotely sensed data additionally make the approaches transferable to other locations and allow for mapping at larger scales. Soil moisture assessment from point data revealed varied soil moisture patterns whereas global remotely sensed and modeled products rather provide complementary information about growing conditions, and hence a situational assessment tool of potential of physical availability dimension of food security. This study forms a baseline upon which additional monitoring and assessment of the Kilombero wetland ecosystem can be performed with the current results marked as a reference. Moreover, the study serves as a demonstration case of remote sensing based approaches for land cover and soil moisture mapping, whose results are useful to stakeholders to aid in the implementation of adapted production techniques for yield optimization while minimizing the unsustainable use of the natural resources.Feuchtgebiete erbringen wichtige ökologische, biologische und sozial-ökonomische Dienstleistungen, welche entscheidend für das menschliche Dasein sind. Der steigende Bedarf an Nahrung, der Mangel an landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen und die Veränderung der klimatischen Bedingungen in Ostafrika haben zu einem Paradigmenwechsel vom Anbau im Hochland hin zur Nutzung von Feuchtgebieten geführt. Allerdings sind Kontrolle und Management der Aktivitäten in Feuchtgebieten notwendig, um die nachhaltige Nutzung zu sichern und negative Effekte dieser Aktivitäten zu vermeiden. Die Implementierung erfolgt durch die Landverwalter in den Feuchtgebieten. Den Nutzern von Feuchtgebieten wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse bereitzustellen dient als Hilfsmittel zur politischen Entscheidungsfindung für die nachhaltige Feuchtgebietsnutzung. Die Forschung im Rahmen der Dissertation beinhaltet zwei Hauptkomponenten: erstens den Bedarf an aktuellen Landbedeckungskarten auf einer angemessenen Skalenebene und zweitens die Erfassung der Bodenfeuchte als wichtiger Einflussfaktor auf die landwirtschaftliche Produktion. Das Ziel der Untersuchung war, Landbedeckungskarten auf Grundlage von multisensorischen optischen Daten zu erstellen und die Eignung der Textur der einfach polarisierten Sentinel-1 Grauwertmatrix (GLCM) sowie der einer Hauptkomponentenanalyse (PCA) bei Anwendung unterschiedlicher Klassifikationsalgorithmen zu beurteilen. Des Weiteren wurden raum-zeitliche Bodenfeuchtemuster über drei hydrologische Zonen hinweg modelliert, die Bodenfeuchte aus Radardaten abgeleitet sowie die Erstellung von Bodenfeuchteprodukten auf Basis von globalen Produkten untersucht. Die Korrelation der Bodenfeuchteprodukte mit dem Normalisierten Differenzierten Vegetationsindex (NDVI) wurde ebenfalls analysiert. RapidEye, Sentinel-2 und Landsat Bilder wurden genutzt um die räumliche Ausdehnung der vier Hauptklassen (Vegetation, freiliegender Boden, Wasser und Bebauung) der Landbedeckung zu ermitteln. Für die Zeitreihenanalyse der der Landbedeckungsdynamik wurden RapidEye-Daten von August 2013 bis Juni 2015, Sentinel-2-Bilder von Dezember 2015 bis August 2016 und Landsat-8-Bilder von 2013 bis 2016 verwendet. Die größte Herausforderung war jedoch die Wolkenbedeckung, weshalb die Anwendung von Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) für die Feuchtgebietskartierung getestet wurde. Die gemessene Bodenfeuchte wurde mittels Variogrammen für die drei hydrologischen Zonen (Uferzone, Mitte und Randgebiete) raum-zeitlich interpoliert. Ein Rauhigkeitsparameter wurde aus einem semi-empirischen Modell hergeleitet. Die Bodenfeuchte wurde aus TerraSAR-X und RadarSAT-2- Bildern unter Verwendung des Rauhigkeitsparameters als Eingangsgröße in einer linearen Regression abgeleitet. Vor der Zusammenführung der Produkte wurde das globale Bodenfeuchteprodukt mithilfe von dreifacher Kollokation auf Fehler überprüft. Die Kreuzkorrelation zwischen NDVI und Bodenfeuchte wurde berechnet. Optische Daten (RapidEye, Landsat-8 und Sentinel-2) wurden genutzt, um die zeitliche Dynamik der Landbedeckung zu bestimmen. Die Landbedeckungsverhältnisse wurde mit der Höhe des Grundwasserspiegels korreliert. Ein hoher Grundwasserstand im Juni resultierte in 45-57% unbedecktem Boden, während der Anteil der Vegetation 34-47% betrug. Im Dezember, als der Grundwasserspiegel seinen Tiefststand hatte, erhöhte sich der Anteil des freiliegenden Bodens auf 62-69% und der Anteil der Vegetation verringerte sich auf 27-25%. Das zeigt, dass Grundwasserspiegel und Vegetation saisonalen Schwankungen unterworfen sind. Während der Trockenzeit liegen 68-81% der gesamten als Vegetation klassifizierten Fläche innerhalb der Uferzone. In der Klassifikation der SAR-Bilder liegt die Gesamtgenauigkeit der einfach polarisierten VV-Bilder im Rahmen von 54-76%, 60-81% und 61-80%, entsprechend für Random Forest (RF), Neuronale Netze (NN) und Support Vector Machine (SVM). Die GLCM ergab eine Gesamtgenauigkeit von 64-86%, 65-88% und 65-86% für RF, NN und SVM. Die über eine PCA abgeleiteten Bilder erreichten eine ähnliche Genauigkeit von 68-92% für NN, RF und SVM. Die PCA-Bilder weisen die höchste Gesamtgenauigkeit der gesamten Zeitreihe auf, was darauf hinweist, dass eine Reduktion von Textureigenschaften auf Layer der maximalen Varianz enthalten, die Genauigkeit erhöht. Die Standardabweichung der Bodenfeuchte stieg mit zunehmender Bodenfeuchte. Die Bodentextur spielt dabei eine Schlüsselrolle für das Wasserhaltevermögen des Bodens. Die Uferzone wies einen hohen Wassergehalt auf, was durch den hohen Anteil von Ton und Humus zu erklären ist. Die beobachteten und simulierten Bodenfeuchtewerte von co-polarisierten RadarSAT-2 HH, TerraSAR-X HH und VV Daten korrelieren mit einem R2 von 0.88 - 0.92. Die zusammengesetzten globalen Bodenfeuchteprodukte von FLDAS_NOAH, ERA-Interim sowie SMOS und FLDAS_VIC, ERA-Interim und SMOS zeigen ähnliche Muster wie FLDAS_NOAH und FLDAS_VIC, was über die Verwendung desselben Niederschlagsproduktes (RFE) zu erklären ist. Die Kreuzkorrelation von MODIS NDVI und den zusammengeführten Bodenfeuchteprodukten ergab eine zeitliche Verzögerung des NDVI von zwei Monaten. Dieser Zusammenhang kann daher bei der Bestimmung des Saisonbeginns aus Bodenfeuchtigkeitsprodukten nützlich sein. Zusammengefasst hat die Studie gezeigt, wie Satellitenbilder zur Charakterisierung von Wetlands genutzt werden können. Die große Abdeckung und häufige Aufnahme der optischen und Mikrowellen-Fernerkundungsdaten ermöglichen darüber hinaus die Übertragung der Ansätze auf weitere Gebiete und Kartierung auf größeren Skalen. Die Punktmessungen zeigen kleinräumige Muster der Bodenfeuchte, während globale Fernerkundungsprodukte und Modelle Informationen über die Wachstumsbedingungen liefern und somit ein Bewertungsinstrument der Ernährungssicherheit darstellen können. Weiterhin bildet die Studie eine Basis, auf der ein weitergehendes Monitoring und eine Bewertung des Feuchtgebietsökosystems durchgeführt werden kann. Sie ist ein Beispiel für fernerkundungsbasierte Ansätze zur Landbedeckungs- und Bodenfeuchtekartierung; ihre Ergebnisse sind nützlich, um Akteuren bei der Implementierung von Produktionstechniken zu unterstützen, welche die Erträge maximieren und gleichzeitig die nicht nachhaltige Nutzung der natürlichen Ressourcen minimieren

    The contentious performances of culture jamming : art, repertoires of contention, and social movement theory

    Culture jamming is a form of contentious politics in which activists utilize ironic frames to challenge a dominant set of social relationships and institutions. Despite its contestational nature, scholars rarely apply the insights of social movement theory to explain this curious phenomenon. The main concerns of this project are to provide an empirical analysis of culture jamming organizations and to develop a theoretical approach to explaining repertoire change and tactical choice. The primary thesis mediating these empirical and theoretical concerns is that a close relation exists between the development of twentieth century art in advanced Western democracies and culture jamming. Developing this argument and addressing these concerns entails three basic tasks. First, in view of the failure of the literature to provide a robust concept, I develop a rigorous conceptualization of culture jamming as an oppositional tactic. Second, I present an approach to theory that begins to integrate the macro- and micro-levels of analysis. This task involves both a dialogue between sociologists Charles Tilly and Pierre Bourdieu and their reconciliation with collective action theory, the application of rational choice theory to social movements and protest. Although multi-faceted, this synthesis focuses on collective identities and resources as explanations of the evaluations of tactical alternatives. Third, I improve on previous efforts to study culture jamming empirically by applying the most rigorous methodological techniques available under significant data and sampling constraints. I compare and contrast the data from a sample of twelve culture jamming organizations to generate the most comprehensive empirical portrait of such groups in the literature

    Subsurface radar imaging from space

    © Cranfield University, 2018Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) are two widely used techniques for acquiring radar images. GPR, as its name suggests, produces radar images of the below ground environment. SAR is a remote sensing technique which allows moving radar systems to produce radar images with dramatically improved resolutions over conventional radar systems. Despite their benefits, both GPR and SAR suffer from certain limitations. In the case of GPR, the radar system has to be in close proximity with the subsurface volume being surveyed, which limits the process to relatively small areas that are easily accessible. SAR allows large areas to be surveyed rapidly from large distances, but cannot distinguish buried objects from surface objects. This thesis focuses on a radar technique that offers the opportunity to overcome these limitations and allow subsurface radar imaging of large areas using radar data gathered by remote sensing systems. This novel technique is known as Virtual Bandwidth SAR (VB-SAR). VB-SAR utilises changes in soil moisture over a series of SAR images to differentiate buried objects from objects on the surface. In addition to this differentiation, VB-SAR also allows extremely high (centimetre scale) subsurface range resolutions to be obtained from SAR images with range resolutions measured in metres. This research has experimentally demonstrated the basic feasibility of performing remote subsurface radar imaging with the VB-SAR scheme. Within the laboratory environment a buried target has been successfully imaged using VB-SAR and the fundamentals of VB-SAR have been verified. Dramatic increases in subsurface range resolutions have been demonstrated, as has the ability of the VB-SAR scheme to work correctly over a range of radar frequencies, observation angles and polarisations. This laboratory work has been enabled by use of the Tomographic Profiling (TP) imaging scheme. TP is a synthetic aperture based imaging algorithm, but unlike conventional SAR TP produces images with a constant look angle over the entire imaging scene. This enabled the performance of the VB-SAR imaging scheme to be easily evaluated over a range of look angles using a single radar dataset and simplified the experimental setup. In addition to the experimental work, simulation exercises have been conducted and image processors have been implemented. Simulation, using a simulator created as part of this work, has allowed testing of the VB-SAR scheme in a range of scenarios (sidelooking SAR, different soils, multiple buried targets). As a means to satisfy the requirements of new applications and user needs, novel Earth Observation (EO) systems are exploring the suitability of Distributed Satellite Systems (DSS) in which multiple observation assets concurrently sense the Earth. Given the temporal and spatial resolution requirements of EO products, DSS are often envisioned as large-scale systems with multiple sensing capabilities operating in a networked manner. Enabled by the consolidation of small satellite platforms and fostered by the emerging capabilities of distributed systems, these new architectures pose multiple design and operational challenges. Two of them are the main pillars of this research, namely, the conception of decision-support tools to assist the architecting process of a DSS, and the design of autonomous operational frameworks based on decentralised, on-board decision-making. The first part of this dissertation addresses the architecting of heterogeneous, networked DSS architectures that hybridise small satellite platforms with traditional EO assets. We present a generic design-oriented optimisation framework based on tradespace exploration methodologies. The goals of this framework are twofold: to select the most optimal constellation design; and to facilitate the identification of design trends, unfeasible regions, and tensions among architectural attributes. Oftentimes in EO DSS, system requirements and stakeholder preferences are not only articulated through functional attributes (i.e. resolution, revisit time, etc.) or monetary constraints, but also through qualitative traits such as flexibility, evolvability, robustness, or resiliency, amongst others. In line with that, the architecting framework defines a single figure of merit that aggregates quantitative attributes and qualitative ones-the so-called ilities of a system. With that, designers can steer the design of DSS both in terms of performance or cost, and in terms of their high-level characteristics. The application of this optimisation framework has been illustrated in two timely use-cases identified in the context of the EU-funded ONION project: a system that measures ocean and ice parameters in Polar regions to facilitate weather forecast and off-shore operations; and a system that provides agricultural variables crucial for global management of water stress, crop state, and draughts. The analysis of architectural features facilitated a comprehensive understanding of the functional and operational characteristics of DSS. With that, this thesis continues to delve into the design of DSS by focusing on one particular functional trait: autonomy. The minimisation of human-operator intervention has been traditionally sought in other space systems and can be especially critical for large-scale, structurally dynamic, heterogeneous DSS. In DSS, autonomy is expected to cope with the likely inability to operate very large-scale systems in a centralised manner, to improve the science return, and to leverage many of their emerging capabilities (e.g. tolerance to failures, adaptability to changing structures and user needs, responsiveness). We propose an autonomous operational framework that provides decentralised decision-making capabilities to DSS by means of local reasoning and individual resource allocation, and satellite-to-satellite interactions. In contrast to previous works, the autonomous decision-making framework is evaluated in this dissertation for generic constellation designs the goal of which is to minimise global revisit times. As part of the characterisation of our solution, we stressed the implications that autonomous operations can have upon satellite platforms with stringent resource constraints (e.g. power, memory, communications capabilities) and evaluated the behaviour of the solution for a large-scale DSS composed of 117 CubeSat-like satellite units.La imatgeria per satèl·lit ha esdevingut un recurs essencial per assolir tasques ambientals, humanitàries o industrials. Per tal de satisfer els requeriments de les noves aplicacions i usuaris, els sistemes d’observació de la Terra (OT) estan explorant la idoneïtat dels Sistemes de Satèl·lit Distribuïts (SSD), on múltiples observatoris espacials mesuren el planeta simultàniament. Degut al les resolucions temporals i espacials requerides, els SSD sovint es conceben com sistemes de gran escala que operen en xarxa. Aquestes noves arquitectures promouen les capacitats emergents dels sistemes distribuïts i, tot i que són possibles gràcies a l’acceptació de les plataformes de satèl·lits petits, encara presenten molts reptes en quant al disseny i operacions. Dos d’ells són els pilars principals d’aquesta tesi, en concret, la concepció d’eines de suport a la presa de decisions pel disseny de SSD, i la definició d’operacions autònomes basades en gestió descentralitzada a bord dels satèl·lits. La primera part d’aquesta dissertació es centra en el disseny arquitectural de SSD heterogenis i en xarxa, imbricant tecnologies de petits satèl·lits amb actius tradicionals. Es presenta un entorn d’optimització orientat al disseny basat en metodologies d’exploració i comparació de solucions. Els objectius d’aquest entorn són: la selecció el disseny de constel·lació més òptim; i facilitar la identificació de tendències de disseny, regions d’incompatibilitat, i tensions entre atributs arquitecturals. Sovint en els SSD d’OT, els requeriments del sistema i l’expressió de prioritats no només s’articulen en quant als atributs funcionals o les restriccions monetàries, sinó també a través de les característiques qualitatives com la flexibilitat, l’evolucionabilitat, la robustesa, o la resiliència, entre d’altres. En línia amb això, l’entorn d’optimització defineix una única figura de mèrit que agrega rendiment, cost i atributs qualitatius. Així l’equip de disseny pot influir en les solucions del procés d’optimització tant en els aspectes quantitatius, com en les característiques dalt nivell. L’aplicació d’aquest entorn d’optimització s’il·lustra en dos casos d’ús actuals identificats en context del projecte europeu ONION: un sistema que mesura paràmetres de l’oceà i gel als pols per millorar la predicció meteorològica i les operacions marines; i un sistema que obté mesures agronòmiques vitals per la gestió global de l’aigua, l’estimació d’estat dels cultius, i la gestió de sequeres. L’anàlisi de propietats arquitecturals ha permès copsar de manera exhaustiva les característiques funcionals i operacionals d’aquests sistemes. Amb això, la tesi ha seguit aprofundint en el disseny de SSD centrant-se, particularment, en un tret funcional: l’autonomia. Minimitzar la intervenció de l’operador humà és comú en altres sistemes espacials i podria ser especialment crític pels SSD de gran escala, d’estructura dinàmica i heterogenis. En els SSD s’espera que l’autonomia solucioni la possible incapacitat d’operar sistemes de gran escala de forma centralitzada, que millori el retorn científic i que n’apuntali les seves propietats emergents (e.g. tolerància a errors, adaptabilitat a canvis estructural i de necessitats d’usuari, capacitat de resposta). Es proposa un sistema d’operacions autònomes que atorga la capacitat de gestionar els sistemes de forma descentralitzada, a través del raonament local, l’assignació individual de recursos, i les interaccions satèl·lit-a-satèl·lit. Al contrari que treballs anteriors, la presa de decisions autònoma s’avalua per constel·lacions que tenen com a objectius de missió la minimització del temps de revisita global.Postprint (published version
