A stochastic framework for multiscale strength prediction using adaptive discontinuity layout optimisation (ADLO)

    Get PDF
The prediction of strength properties of matrix-inclusion materials, which in general are random in nature due to their spatial distribution and variation of pores, particles, and matrix-inclusion interfaces, plays an important role with regard to the reliability of materials and structures. The recently developed discontinuity layout optimisation (DLO) [18] and adaptive discontinuity layout optimisation (ADLO) [4], which can be used for determination of strength properties of materials [3, 4] and structures [9], are included in a stochastic framework, using random variables. Therefore diļ¬€erent material properties, inļ¬‚uencing the overall strength of the matrix-inclusion material (e.g. matrix and inclusion strength, number and distribution of pores/particles) in a considered RVE are assumed to follow certain probability distributions [12]. A sensitivity study for the identiļ¬cation of material parameters showing the largest inļ¬‚uence on the strength of the considered matrix-inclusion materials is performed. The obtained results provide ļ¬rst insight into the nature of the reliability of strength properties of matrix-inclusion materials, paving the way to a better understanding and ļ¬nally improvement of the eļ¬€ective strength properties of matrix-inclusion materials

    Stochastic Methods in Risk Analysis

In this paper, we review basic stochastic methods which can be used to extend state-of-the-art deterministic analytical methods for risk analysis. We can conclude that the standard deterministic analytical methods highly depend on the practical experience and knowledge of the evaluator and therefore, the stochastic methods should be introduced. The new risk analysis methods should consider the uncertainties in input values. We present how large is the impact on the results of the analysis solving practical example of FMECA with uncertainties modelled using Monte Carlo sampling

Analytical reliability calculation of linear dynamical systems in higher dimensions

    Get PDF
The recent application of reliability analysis to controller synthesis has created the need for a computationally efficient method for the estimation of the first excursion probabilities for linear dynamical systems in higher dimensions. Simulation methods cannot provide an adequate solution to this specific application, which involves numerical optimization of the system reliability with respect to the controller parameters, because the total computational time needed is still prohibitive. Instead, an analytical approach is presented in this paper. The problem reduces to the calculation of the conditional upcrossing rate at each surface of the failure boundary. The correlation between upcrossings of the failure surface for the different failure events may be addressed by the introduction of a multi-dimensional integral. An efficient algorithm is adopted for the numerical calculation of this integral. Also, the problem of approximation of the conditional upcrossing rate is discussed. For the latter there is no known theoretical solution. Three of the semi-empirical corrections that have been proposed previously for scalar processes are compared and it is shown that the correction should be based on the bandwidth characteristics of the system. Finally, examples that verify the validity of the analytical approximations for systems in higher dimensions are discussed

Intersystem soft handover for converged DVB-H and UMTS networks

Digital video broadcasting for handhelds (DVB-H) is the standard for broadcasting Internet Protocol (IP) data services to mobile portable devices. To provide interactive services for DVB-H, the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) can be used as a terrestrial interaction channel for the unidirectional DVB-H network. The converged DVB-H and UMTS network can be used to address the congestion problems due to the limited multimedia channel accesses of the UMTS network. In the converged network, intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS is needed for an optimum radio resource allocation, which reduces network operation cost while providing the required quality of service. This paper deals with the intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS in such a converged network. The converged network structure is presented. A novel soft handover scheme is proposed and evaluated. After considering the network operation cost, the performance tradeoff between the network quality of service and the network operation cost for the intersystem soft handover in the converged network is modeled using a stochastic tree and analyzed using a numerical simulation. The results show that the proposed algorithm is feasible and has the potential to be used for implementation in the real environment

Construction and Verification of Performance and Reliability Models

Over the last two decades formal methods have been extended towards performance and reliability evaluation. This paper tries to provide a rather intuitive explanation of the basic concepts and features in this area. Instead of striving for mathematical rigour, the intention is to give an illustrative introduction to the basics of stochastic models, to stochastic modelling using process algebra, and to model checking as a technique to analyse stochastic models
