    A sample selective linear predictive analysis of speech signals

    The Linear Prediction Analysis is one of the popular methods of processing speech. But it has problems in estimating the vocal tract characteristics of voiced sounds uttered by females and children. This is because the conventional linear prediction method assumes that all the sample values in each analysis frame are to be approximated by a linear combination of a definite number of the previous samples whether the previous samples include excitation periods or not. Also, the Linear Prediction analysis is easily affected by source excitation; The vocal tract characteristics of signals of short pitch period can be estimated more accurately by the Sample Selective Linear Prediction (SSLP). The first stage of a SSLP analysis is the conventional linear predictive analysis and in the second stage, only those samples which are under a specified threshold are used for further analysis; This work outlines a numerically stable algorithm for performing the SSLP using the Autocorrelation method.     Suppression of acoustic noise in speech using spectral subtraction

    technical reportA stand alone noise suppression algorithm is presented for reducing the spectral effects of acoustically added noise in speech. Effective performance of digital speech processors operating in practical environments may require suppression of noise from the digital waveform. Spectral subtraction offers a computationally efficient, processor independent, approach to effective digital speech analysis. The method, requiring about the same computation as high-speed convolution, suppresses stationary noise for speech by subtracting the spectral noise bias calculated during non-speech activity. Secondary procedures and then applied to attenuate the residual noise left after subtraction. Since the algorithm resynthesizes a speech waveform, it can be used as a preprocessor to narrow band voice communications systems, speech recognition systems or speaker authentication systems

    Detection of Nonstationary Noise and Improved Voice Activity Detection in an Automotive Hands-free Environment

    Speech processing in the automotive environment is a challenging problem due to the presence of powerful and unpredictable nonstationary noise. This thesis addresses two detection problems involving both nonstationary noise signals and nonstationary desired signals. Two detectors are developed: one to detect passing vehicle noise in the presence of speech and one to detect speech in the presence of passing vehicle noise. The latter is then measured against a state-of-the-art voice activity detector used in telephony. The process of compiling a library of recordings in the automobile to facilitate this research is also detailed

    Software Corrections of Vocal Disorders

    We discuss how vocal disorders can be post-corrected via a simple nonlinear noise reduction scheme. This work is motivated by the need of a better understanding of voice dysfunctions. This would entail a twofold advantage for affected patients: Physicians can perform better surgical interventions and on the other hand researchers can try to build up devices that can help to improve voice quality, i.e. in a phone conversation, avoiding any surgigal treatment. As a first step, a proper signal classification is performed, through the idea of geometric signal separation in a feature space. Then through the analysis of the different regions populated by the samples coming from healthy people and from patients affected by T1A glottis cancer, one is able to understand which kind of interventions are necessary in order to correct the illness, i.e. to move the corresponding feature vector from the sick region to the healthy one.
