An Efficient Solution to the Mixed Shop Scheduling Problem Using a Modified Genetic Algorithm

    Get PDF
The mixed job shop scheduling problem is one in which some jobs have fixed machine orders and other jobs may be processed in arbitrary orders. In past literature, optimal solutions have been proposed based on adaptations of classical solutions such as by Johnson, Thompson and Giffler among many others, by pseudopolynomial algorithms, by simulation, and by Genetic Algorithms (GA). GA based solutions have been proposed for flexible Job shops. This paper proposes a GA algorithm for the mixed job shop scheduling problem. The paper starts with an analysis of the characteristics of the so-called mixed shop problem. Based on those properties, a modified GA is proposed to minimize the makespan of the mixed shop schedule. In this approach, sample instances used as test data are generated under the constraints of shop scheduling problems. A comparison of our results based on benchmark data indicate that our modified GA provides an efficient solution for the mixed shop scheduling problem

ABSTRACT-The Job shop scheduling (JSS) problem consists of "n" jobs and "m" operations on each of the jobs and it is hardest combinatorial optimization problems for which it is extremely difficult to find optimal solutions. Past two decades, much attention has been made to general heuristics such as Genetic algorithm, Ant Colony Optimization, Tabu Search and Simulated Annealing to solve this type of combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper we present how the adaptive search algorithms namely Tabu search is applied to solve Job shop scheduling (JSS) problem. The method uses dispatching rules to obtain an initial solution and searches for new solutions in a neighborhood based on the critical paths of the jobs. Several benchmark problems are tested using this algorithm for the best makespan and the obtained results are encouraging when compared with benchmark values

Kata Kunci : job shop, harmony searchABSTRACT: Job shop scheduling became one of the problems often faced by every company. With a good job shop scheduling, each company is able to improve the performance of the engine so that the reduced production costs and production time will be faster. However, job shop scheduling problem is a combinatorial problem which is quite complicated, because even very large solution space. One method that can solve this problem is the harmony search. In this final project, will be used harmony search as a method to solve job shop scheduling problems. Harmony search itself was inspired by a jazz musician who continuously improving the harmony until he found what he wanted. Similarly, in harmony search, there are three solutions that do repairs, ie randomization, harmony memory consideration, pitch adjustment and rate. At the end of this final project will be given the best schedule that can be obtained by implementing the harmony search. Based on research, harmony search has a very good performance for problems of combinatorial optimization problems. In the case of optimization of water distribution networks harmony search is able to provide the same solution with lower cost of 0.28 up to 10.26% compared to other algorithms such as genetic algorithm metaheuristik, simulated annealing, and taboo search.Keyword: job shop, harmony searc

[EN] Job-shop scheduling problem is one of the most important fields in manufacturing optimization where a set of n jobs must be processed on a set of m specified machines. Each job consists of a specific set of operations, which have to be processed according to a given order. The Flexible Job Shop problem (FJSP) is a generalization of the above-mentioned problem, where each operation can be processed by a set of resources and has a processing time depending on the resource used. The FJSP problems cover two difficulties, namely, machine assignment problem and operation sequencing problem. This paper addresses the flexible job-shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times to minimize two kinds of objectives function: makespan and bi-criteria objective function. For that, we propose a hybrid algorithm based on genetic algorithm (GA) and variable neighbourhood search (VNS) to solve this problem. To evaluate the performance of our algorithm, we compare our results with other methods existing in literature. All the results show the superiority of our algorithm against the available ones in terms of solution quality.Azzouz, A.; Ennigrou, M.; Ben Said, L. (2017). Studies had stated that less attention was given to the education aspect, such as teaching and learning in planning for improving the TVET system. Due to the 21st Century context, the current paradigm of teaching for the TVET educators also has been reported to be fatal and need to be shifted. All these disadvantages reported hindering the country from achieving the 5th strategy in the Strategic Plan for Vocational Education Transformation to transform TVET system as a whole. Therefore, this study aims to develop a framework for sustainable TVET Teacher Education program in Malaysia. This study had adopted an Exploratory Sequential Mix-Method design, which involves a semi-structured interview (phase one) and survey method (phase two). Nine experts had involved in phase one chosen by using Purposive Sampling Technique. As in phase two, 118 TVET-TE program lecturers were selected as the survey sample chosen through random sampling method. After data analysis in phase one (thematic analysis) and phase two (Principal Component Analysis), eight domains and 22 elements have been identified for the framework for sustainable TVET-TE program in Malaysia. This framework was identified to embed the elements of 21st Century Education, thus filling the gap in this research. The research findings also indicate that the developed framework was unidimensional and valid for the development and research regarding TVET-TE program in Malaysia. Lastly, it is in the hope that this research can be a guide for the nations in producing a quality TVET teacher in the future

Multiprocessor task scheduling in multistage hyrid flowshops: a genetic algorithm approach

    Get PDF
This paper considers multiprocessor task scheduling in a multistage hybrid flow-shop environment. The objective is to minimize the make-span, that is, the completion time of all the tasks in the last stage. This problem is of practical interest in the textile and process industries. A genetic algorithm (GA) is developed to solve the problem. The GA is tested against a lower bound from the literature as well as against heuristic rules on a test bed comprising 400 problems with up to 100 jobs, 10 stages, and with up to five processors on each stage. For small problems, solutions found by the GA are compared to optimal solutions, which are obtained by total enumeration. For larger problems, optimum solutions are estimated by a statistical prediction technique. Computational results show that the GA is both effective and efficient for the current problem.
