Energy Efficient and Reliable ARQ Scheme (ER-ACK) for Mission Critical M2M/IoT Services
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are the main infrastructure for machine to machine (M2M) and Internet of thing (IoT). Since various sophisticated M2M/IoT services have their own quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, reliable data transmission in WSNs is becoming more important. However, WSNs have strict constraints on resources due to the crowded wireless frequency, which results in high collision probability. Therefore a more efficient data delivering scheme that minimizes both the transmission delay and energy consumption is required. This paper proposes energy efficient and reliable data transmission ARQ scheme, called energy efficient and reliable ACK (ER-ACK), to minimize transmission delay and energy consumption at the same time. The proposed scheme has three aspects of advantages compared to the legacy ARQ schemes such as ACK, NACK and implicit-ACK (I-ACK). It consumes smaller energy than ACK, has smaller transmission delay than NACK, and prevents the duplicated retransmission problem of I-ACK. In addition, resource considered reliability (RCR) is suggested to quantify the improvement of the proposed scheme, and mathematical analysis of the transmission delay and energy consumption are also presented. The simulation results show that the ER-ACK scheme achieves high RCR by significantly reducing transmission delay and energy consumption
Predictive Duty Cycle Adaptation for Wireless Camera Networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) typically employ dynamic duty cycle schemes to efficiently handle different patterns of communication traffic in the network. However, existing duty cycling approaches are not suitable for event-driven WSN, in particular, camera-based networks designed to track humans and objects. A characteristic feature of such networks is the spatially-correlated bursty traffic that occurs in the vicinity of potentially highly mobile objects. In this paper, we propose a concept of indirect sensing in the MAC layer of a wireless camera network and an active duty cycle adaptation scheme based on Kalman filter that continuously predicts and updates the location of the object that triggers bursty communication traffic in the network. This prediction allows the camera nodes to alter their communication protocol parameters prior to the actual increase in the communication traffic. Our simulations demonstrate that our active adaptation strategy outperforms TMAC not only in terms of energy efficiency and communication latency, but also in terms of TIBPEA, a QoS metric for event-driven WSN

However, recent trends and industry needs are favoring TCP presence in IoT environments. In this article, we describe the main IoT scenarios where TCP will be used. We then analyze the historically claimed issues of TCP in the IoT context. We argue that, in contrast to generally accepted wisdom, most of those possible issues fall in one of the following categories: i) are also found in well-accepted IoT end-to-end reliability mechanisms, ii) can be solved, or iii) are not actual issues. Considering the future prominent role of TCP in the IoT, we provide recommendations for lightweight TCP implementation and suitable operation in such scenarios, based on our IETF standardization work on the topic.Postprint (author's final draft
HoPP: Robust and Resilient Publish-Subscribe for an Information-Centric Internet of Things
This paper revisits NDN deployment in the IoT with a special focus on the
interaction of sensors and actuators. Such scenarios require high
responsiveness and limited control state at the constrained nodes. We argue
that the NDN request-response pattern which prevents data push is vital for IoT
networks. We contribute HoP-and-Pull (HoPP), a robust publish-subscribe scheme
for typical IoT scenarios that targets IoT networks consisting of hundreds of
resource constrained devices at intermittent connectivity. Our approach limits
the FIB tables to a minimum and naturally supports mobility, temporary network
partitioning, data aggregation and near real-time reactivity. We experimentally
evaluate the protocol in a real-world deployment using the IoT-Lab testbed with
varying numbers of constrained devices, each wirelessly interconnected via IEEE
802.15.4 LowPANs. Implementations are built on CCN-lite with RIOT and support
experiments using various single- and multi-hop scenarios
A Scalable Hybrid MAC Protocol for Massive M2M Networks
In Machine to Machine (M2M) networks, a robust Medium Access Control (MAC)
protocol is crucial to enable numerous machine-type devices to concurrently
access the channel. Most literatures focus on developing simplex (reservation
or contention based)MAC protocols which cannot provide a scalable solution for
M2M networks with large number of devices. In this paper, a frame-based Hybrid
MAC scheme, which consists of a contention period and a transmission period, is
proposed for M2M networks. In the proposed scheme, the devices firstly contend
the transmission opportunities during the contention period, only the
successful devices will be assigned a time slot for transmission during the
transmission period. To balance the tradeoff between the contention and
transmission period in each frame, an optimization problem is formulated to
maximize the system throughput by finding the optimal contending probability
during contention period and optimal number of devices that can transmit during
transmission period. A practical hybrid MAC protocol is designed to implement
the proposed scheme. The analytical and simulation results demonstrate the
effectiveness of the proposed Hybrid MAC protocol
